Royalty among real-time strategies.

Tzar: The Burden of the Crown, an elaborate and masterfully executed real-time strategy driving its inspiration from the history of medieval wars, is available on GOG.com for only $5.99.

Many people imagine the life of the monarchs to be simple and blissful. There's no higher authority, so there's no one to tell them what to do. They can decide to spend their days feasting, dancing, hunting, and pursuing other frivolous activities. The thing they don't understand is the weight of the crown. Not the actual weight--that's quite bearable, even though many rulers would much prefer a simple felt hat, then a layered construct of fine gold and jewel stones--they weigh no less than regular stones, mind you. The metaphorical weight is far greater. The burden of the crown is the burden of the ages. As it rests on one's head, so does the whole history of a nation: the past, the present, and the future. To tell you the truth, the latter feels the heaviest, today. Excuse your Tzar this moment of chatter, Field-marshal. The battle is upon us, let gods make it the last one.

Tzar: The Burden of the Crown offers the best in real-time strategy gameplay with a believable setting and nice sense of scale, and just a splash of fantasy. The three factions available in the game--Europeans, Asians, and Arabs--differ greatly from one another in terms of gameplay style and available facilities. The main campaign spanning across twenty scenarios grants many hours of challenge and excitement. When it ends the game provides an infinite number of randomly-generated maps, and a solid multi-player mode.

Accept the greatest responsibility and take a nation's fate in your own hands in Tzar: The Burden of the Crown, for only $5.99 on GOG.com

TheJadedOne: Can you pause the game?
Can you issue orders while paused?
- Yes, you can pause the game with the physical "Pause" key (the game pauses in the menu too)
- No, you can select units and buildings to see their status but you can't issue any order

Note: tested on the Italian version, that seems to have a different set of contents but should have the same core mechanics.
Looks like my kind of game.
OH HELL YES.

When I first came to GOG I was wondering where this little boss of RTS was.

THAT, is what I'm talking about.

Ghorpm: So it is Tzar after all! It's a great game!
*claps internally* well done man, I was pretty skeptical as I assumed that GOG wouldn't use actual title words in their hints, but turns out to be so. :)

As for you, GOG, thank you for this. This is what I love to see: a good old game, a 5.99 price tag, and the inclusion of the soundtrack.

Ghildrean: I don't think this version includes the additional campaigns, right? In Spain there is a gold edition that includes five campaigns: The Burden of the Crown, El Cid and the Reconquista, King Arthur and Excalibur, The Imperium of Genghis Khan and Domains of Magic.
AFAIK those campaigns were made by gamers. Some of them were so popular and got released on CD in some countries (Italy and Spain I believe) so we may call them semi-official. I can imagine that getting them here was almost impossible (assuming that the blues knew they existed which is not so certain neither)

Thanks :) Mixture of "strategy" and "burden" did the trick ;) I immediately thought about Tzar.

April to be more exact :) I bought it on a release day and I'm pretty sure it was in April. A day or two before Easter.

Roman5: Never heard of this, though this makes this release even better

Underrated gems is what makes GOG special, by looking at the screenshots I'm getting a bit of a "warcraft 2" vibe here, can someone who has played through the game comment on what it's like?

Quizblorg: I played it long time ago, so I mostly rely on memories (very good memories by the way):
- the settings is medieval with 3 playable human factions (European, Asian and Arabian) with some added fantasy elements
- the graphics is a sort of "updated Warcraft II style"
- it was the first RTS game to implement experience and leveling for the units (long before Warcraft 3 did), where every unit you control can level up to a maximum "hero" level (if you can keep them alive)
- units have an inventory system; they can pick up items found on the map (like swords, magic books, and so on...) and use them to improve their stats
- the resource system is based on 4 resources: gold, timber, food and stone; you'll need to build farms for the food and send peasants around for the others

So it can be considered a mix of "Warcraft II RTS style" with added RPG elements and a sort of "Age of Empires resource system". It was a very original RTS mix for the time.

A little side note for Italian/Spanish talking people: you can find the full translated version (for cheap actually) on the on-line store of the Italian/Spanish publisher (FX Interactive). The contents, though, seem to be different (the campaign is mostly about King Arthur in the FX version), but the core game should be the same.
Very helpful and useful information, thank you very much for this

My interest in this game is now pretty high, your description makes it seem pretty kickass

Reviewed in Click! magazine - I see it like it was yesterday...
So, any good fan sites with maps and stuff?
I just noticed my joke about the languages having too many silent letters in their words as opposed to English which had none (insert rimshot here) has a low rating. I would assume I got derepped because people just don't like me, at least I hope that's the reason, because I refuse to believe that there are people in the world TOO FUCKING STUPID to see that I was joking! Shit, I even italicized all the words I used with silent letters so that the slower people here could see that I was making fun of myself.

Somewhere right now George Carlin and Lenny Bruce are looking down on us, and they are crying.
WHAT?! NO ANTHOLOGY ONE?!?! WHY!?!??!?!?!?!?!?

I mean, really. It's just The Burden of the Crown and nothing more? I'm a bit sad right now.

You people are missing like FOUR full new campaings. Do you know that?

GOG, you have to fight a little more and present us more complete packages. ):

Anyway I recommend this game to everyone who likes the RTS genre. Play alone in singleplayer, with friends on lan/online, make maps, crush the enemy in skirmish scenarios, edit everything, rule the world! Whatever you like the most :P

I wrote about the issue here. You are from Spain so you are the lucky one to get those campaigns on CD. They were not released globaly, you know.

Oh, sorry. My bad. Really, I beg pardon. I'm such an ignorant. ): I just assumed that everyone got the pleasure to play it and wondering why GOG didn't bring the Anthology edition. Now everything seems clear. Thank you very much.

Anyway, just for the sake to ask... isn't that easy as just paste the campaigns in the folder, bundle it and get the job done? Or the deal is just the vanilla game and nothing can be done to bring the Anthology?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate so much the GOG effort releasing this and that Tzar is here sitting between the bests of the genre! It's just that sometimes I feel a bit sad when something comes 'incomplete'. And this time I felt somewhat disappointed seeing that it was just a vanilla version :0

Ok, don't mind me anymore. *Shut up mode activated*

It's not a problem at all! I'll gladly answer. Correct me if I'm wrong but AFAIK those campaigns were not for free when they were made so GOG couldn't just paste them. Later on they were sold as a gold edition in Spain and Italy. I guess the publisher paid them some money to include them on the CD. I can imagine that making a deal with them now would be very difficult. And I guess there is a problem with a language too. Is there an English version of those campaigns?
