Tough as nanocarbon.

Sword of the Stars: The Pit, a modern Sci-Fi roguelike turn-based RPG that challenges you to explore an ancient, monster-infested alien complex, is now available 25% off on GOG.com. That's only $7.49 for the first week!

Are you prepared for the Pit? If you think you are, scout, you've already failed and our world is doomed. I want you to really understand this: you are not prepared. Nothing in the world could have prepared you. No amount of training, not even years of experience, nothing. So if you're feeling confident, that you can go to the Feldspar Mountains, scavenge the ancient Suul'ka complex, steal their secrets, and return with the cure for the Ghoul Plague--we're dead. Our only hope lies in your ability to doubt yourself, second-guess your own judgment, and think twice about your every step. This is how dangerous the Pit is. I would know. I've been there. I reached level 3 before my squad was decimated by mutant beasts. So, soldier, I'll ask you one final time, and this time I want you to really think before you give me your answer: are you prepared?

Sword of the Stars: The Pit is a phenomenal turn-based RPG turning the traditional roguelike dungeon exploration, item scumming, and careful planning into a modern gaming experience. The infamous Pit is randomly generated on each playthrough, which--combined with the game's three different character classes--makes up for crazy replayability value. With tons of items to find, many equipment and character modifications, and--most importantly--a vast selection of blood-hungry monsters waiting for your every mistake, this game offers you a Sci-Fi adventure you'll be enjoying for hours and hours.

If you like challenging games that first become your passion, then an obsession, and finally an addiction, you need to grab Sword of the Stars: The Pit right now, for only $7.49 on GOG.com! The offer lasts until Thursday, April 25, at 9:59AM GMT.

tfishell: There's a sense of joy that some of us get from Good Old Games that many probably don't, and you may be one of them, and that's okay.
Don't get me wrong. I can get very excited about new old releases myself, like Balls of Steel, System Shock 2, Sensible World of Soccer, Settlers 3, Magic Carpet 2, Syndicate Wars, Undying, Children of the Nile... Overlord (which granted is kind of borderline).

At the same time I quite welcome indies/newer games like Zafehouse Diaries, Driftmoon, Signal Ops, King's Bounty... the upcoming Fez and Don't Starve (especially the latter) look quite fun, too.

Those are from this year alone, not even including games I'm still interested in acquiring at a later date. If a week or two goes by without something special I just shrug and move on. It's not the end of the world as we know it.

While I do make use of other digital distributors, GOG is still my primary source for games. I love the oldies, but they're not the be all/end all deal to me like some others. DRM-free is still the big sticking point for me, which it has been from the start.

Immoli: ...second one has an offline CD check to go from demo to full version. I think.

mistermumbles: A CD check without an actual CD. Interesting. =P
Whoops. I meant CD-key. I guess it would really be just key though.
This is rogue-like, right? So no saves and one-life-before-game-over?

Yes, there is permadeath like in every good roguelike. The good news is that each class has its own save slot so you can have 3 different games with 3 different styles going if you so choose :D.

You can save on quit. Death is permanent.
Purchased! Been waiting for this to come here for a while.

While we're on the subject of roguelikes... has anyone tried Rogue's Tale yet? I'd like to see that here on gog as well if it is.

Sure, even if GOG completely stopped offering old games, the world would turn. But there aren't many things in my life that excite me right now, and I came to GOG at an exciting time when EA joined, and I guess I'm trying to occasionally relive that joy. I have no car, no real friends that I'd chill with outside of class, I'm basically sleeping, eating, doing schoolwork, or browsing online.

Maybe when I graduate and have time to finally explore the real world, GOG and the state of old game releases won't mean as much to me. However, I don't know if you've seen this or not, but there are many other people that like the old game releases; most don't mind the new releases, though. http://www.gog.com/wishlist/site/continue_to_add_more_good_old_games (At least one pre-2005 game a week is my personal preference. EDIT: Well, obviously that supply would eventually run out. When GOG gets down to the 50-votes level on the wishlist, then I'll stop talking about good old game releases. ;)

Plus, with finals coming up, I need a place to bitch a little.

newager: Any chance for the Indiegogo supporters to activate the game on GOG?
Up to the dev AFAIK.

About time we got some rogue-like RPGs here(as much as I love FTL it doesn't technically count), haven't played the full version but I did toy around with the demo and man was it awesome glad I held off though so now I can get it here and cheaper too.

Now how about you guys get Dungeons of Dredmor plus all 3 DLC packs(Realm of the Diggle Gods, You have to name the expansion pack, and Conquest of the Wizardlands)
Okay, so someone was a little excited by this release then. :-)
I've been eyeing this for quite some time and am pretty pleased to see it here. The real question is: Insta-buy or wait for sale? I know at some point I HAVE to get this, as I am a pretty huge SOTS fan.

For those who've played it: What does this offer lore-wise to the SOTS universe? Are there clear references to the world created by the 4x games?

Rogue's tale is bad. It's badly-balanced. You can get jumped by three mobs surrounding you right at the start. It's all random and not so much procedural, as in there's no method in the madness, or rather no rules in the random.

Also the game is really hard anyway at the start, but then you get these "heritages" and then it becomes too easy. I guess there's a brief period in the middle when it's just the right difficulty, but then that will pass when you get more heritages and there's no going back because the heritages are permanent.

SOTS: THE PIT on the other hand is a good game. It still has inskippable animations and other things that are similar to Dungeons of Dredmor, so if you prefer your roguelikes like soup (DCSS or Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup) then you might be advised to give it a miss.

Nancy Drew and Galactic Civilisations were released a week ago, Overlord was released 3 days ago. It might not be sufficiently dated for your tastes, but GOG is still releasing older games. GalCiv is '03, ND is '04.

Feel free to relax more. :P The games may not be to your tastes but they are getting released.

Ah, that's unfortunate. Oh well, one less game I have to buy I suppose. Definitely like SotSTP though, very fun. Soup I downloaded but have not played yet. I also downloaded another free one called.. Tales of Maj'Eyal I believe? Haven't tried that one yet either, though. Also I just noticed that I didn't finish my sentence in post you responded to. It was supposed to say "if it is any good" heh.

Even though I don't like Rogue's Tale I wouldn't want you to miss out on a game you might enjoy. Also maybe he will iron out the problems I found. There is a demo on desura or maybe his own site? There's a demo somewhere anyway. I would urge you to try it to see if you like it even though I don't.

Tome4 which you say you've downloaded is another good, free roguelike game. It has an MMO flavour as instead of mana you have all these abilities and spells with cooldowns that you have to juggle. It has great graphics, online chat.

In addition to soup and tome, other free roguelikes you may enjoy are: angband, sil (a Tolkein flavoured game), cataclysm, brogue (very pretty ASCII graphics), doomrl (yes it's doom with original music and sprites). There are hundreds more too.

Although it's mainly for developers, the #rgrd irc channel on irc.quakenet.org is a good place to find out about roguelike games or to chat with other fans.

It does have a demo available on GG and Steam btw.
I can not estimate any further content since the demo option made me aware of the fact, that my laptop does not run this game... at least I found that out without spending 7,50$, I really should be more attentive in regards of the requirements of modern 2D games.
