Become a Tri-System Confederation legend!

Privateer 2: The Darkening, an epic-scaled space trade and combat sim from the cult-classic Wing Commander series, with full motion video sequences starring Christopher Walken, John Hurt, and Clive Owen, is available on GOG.com, for only $5.99. At the same time, we offer you a chance to expand your collection of Wing Commander titles, with our special 48-hour Wing Commander Series Promo!

This was not a pleasant reality to wake up to. They told you you've survived a crash which totaled your spacecraft. You can't really remember anything. You're not even quite sure if you belong in the Tri-System. All you have, is the feeling that this isn't the first time you've bounced back from falling to the bottom. You still have just enough currency to afford some flying rust-bucket. It'll do. As long as you have wings, you'll manage, somehow. There always are business opportunities for skilled pilots--dirty jobs that bring good money. A few runs and you'll be able to afford some upgrades, or maybe even a better ship. You'll gain recognition. Fame, even. Somehow, it feels like this all isn't happening for the first time. If only you could recall what dangers await bold pilots in this corner of Universe...

Privateer 2: The Darkening isn't a direct sequel to Wing Commander: Privateer, but rather a completely different adventure in a remote part of the universe governed by the Tri-System Confederation. In fact, there are some hints that both games take place in roughly the same time period, but the different settings give each of them its unique feeling. Originally released in 1996, the game offers solid open-ended space trade and combat mechanics, multitude of original missions to take on, an involving story, and full motion video cut-scenes featuring a cast of a-grade actors. If you long for the sensation of piloting your own star ship and living the space-privateer life on your own terms, make sure not to miss this classic title!

Set your helm for the Tri-System and experience a space adventure of yet another lifetime in Privateer 2: The Darkening, for only $5.99 on GOG.com! Don't forget about the Wing Commander Series Promo, as well, because it lasts only until Saturday, September 21, at 9:59AM GMT.

tfishell: Great release GOG! :D Hopefully we'll see the Bullfrog expansions appear soon, if Jeff Skalski does "like the way (I) think". ;)

I have heard others mention higher quality videos for this release, and reference to an expansion pack. Is that stuff that was specific to the Windows "Deluxe" release, or could any of that be implemented into this release?
I didn't see an expansion on WCNews and if it's not there, it doesn't exist :)

Smannesman: I don't particularly care for space sims, but I do want all games featuring Christopher Walken on GOG.
Even the True Crime games? Or does it lose some of the magic when it's not a live action performance?

It's the voice that does it for me.
Live performance is a nice bonus though.

Well then that's cool. :)

Hey, while I have your attention, since Tommo Inc. technically onboard now, we can get the Humongous games here. If you guys want to shatter my dreams for that, just PM me already. ;)

Do you work for Tommo? You should ask them if they own old MicroProse classics
Wishlisted for the video fragments only. The game was so buggy that when I bought it( way back in 2002), I actually returned it because it crashed all the time. GoG has probably ironed out those crashes, but I doubt they could have patched the lousy AI. The shopkeeper didn't even ask for my system specs; he returned my money straight away.

Ha ha, no no dude, I don't work for them, I just know that Tommo is now publisher of Pirates! and Dragonsphere here on GOG; I assume they bought those rights from Atari also. So I do think they have the rights to other Microprose classics now, but I can't 100% say for sure.

I wasn't being entirely serious. But you do have some relation to Humongous yes, with your thread about them here and the like?

I don't work in the shattering dreams department, that would be TurrnipSlayerr :)

JudasIscariot: Ours is the DOS version :)
Hm, I could not get my (German) version of Privateer 2 running properly. Either the fights were too slow (or get slow when too much action is on screen), or the fights are fine but the menu system runs like the devil and is quite unusable. You can’t provide me with your DOSBox config by chance, can you?
My Windows version runs fine.

Also I’m curious if the video sequences still use the interlaced black lines or someone patched the game to display no black lines but double height lines instead? The latter would be way more good looking on today’s LCD monitors. AFAIK most WC games have a patch against this crap but P2 did not. If you made this possible, I would definitely buy this, even if I already own the German version.

It’s a pity that there are many movie minutes with Clive Owen und John Hurt, but we cannot see them in standard TV resolution. Not even VGA. And not even properly in 320x480 because of those black lines. :(

I am an enthusiastic man-child, who likes to help out GOG with some of the rights issues (whenever possible) and send too many emails to Turnipslayerr. :P Seeming Tommo officially here a few days ago (when I randomly checked out the Pirates! page) got me really excited, but if GOG does decide to reject these I'd rather know than be pulled along like a donkey-carrot scenario. They've flatout told us they've rejected titles before, so I think it's better to just get it over with.

HOWEVER, I continue to believe these are fun, classic point and click adventures. And while I have everyone's attention, go watch a few minutes of a walkthrough to see what I mean! (And why don't I just link to my evidence thread again: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/humongous_entertainment_support_thread )
Pajama Sam
Spy Fox
Freddi Fish
Putt-Putt

Only problem is these videos don't usually show all the little funny "click-it" animations; those are half the fun!

He's busy with, like, actual work and stuff.

But seriously, Turnip's been very good about keeping in contact with me about other, more important matters. I just emailed him a few days ago over the excitement of seeing Tommo officially here, but it was probably a bit premature. And by now obviously I know about NDAs and what can and cannot be said. This is just a grand opportunity in my eyes since you wouldn't have to go through Atari now to bring these.

No, I don't think I can just go about giving out dosbox.conf files :P
Goddamn interlacing, is there any known way to fix it?
I love this series. So many fond memories. Needless to say...Instabuy!!

Keep em coming GOG team, I wont be completely happy until every Wing Commander game is here. And LucasArts games also. What's the hold up buy the way?

"You have clearance, Ser Arris."

Probably my favorite cyber-punk styled game ever (until "Circuit's Edge" or George Alec Effinger's Budayeen Trilogy gets a modern cRPG treatment). For its deficiencies as a space sim and harboring more bugs than a mississippi campsite in summer, the edgy and fantastical production values and assorted entourage of British acting talent stands head and shoulders above other FMV pretenders of the era.
