These little grey cells. It is up to them.--Agatha Christie

Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor, a non-linear puzzle-packed adventure featuring the teen detective's most ominous and mystical case ever, is available on GOG.com, for only $5.99.

A shadow has befallen the Blackmore Manor and its inhabitants. The staff whispers of a curse and there are evident signs of witchcraft to be found around the property. There's an angry howling in the nights and there's no way that it can be simply attributed to wind. Something is very, very wrong in the old British mansion and it seems that everyone living there, or merely passing through, puts their life in a grave danger. Luckily Linda Penvellyn, the lady of the house, managed to call for help before she was struck down with strange illness. Who did she call? Why, of course you--Nancy Drew!

Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor is an adventure game featuring the famous teen detective. The Blackmoor Manor that serves as the scene to the mystery you'll be solving is an intriguing place, and its exploration is both challenging and enjoyable--even more so, that the game doesn't force any particular order in which you must solve the puzzles. Speaking of puzzles, there's much variation to them so if you're stuck at one, you'll always get the chance to change the pace and come back to the problematic part later. With a story focusing on things like witchcraft, curses and lycanthropy, this is the darkest of the Nancy Drew games, but it's still well within limits of content appropriate for the young gamers.

Power up those little gray cells and solve the incredible mystery presented in Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor, for only $5.99 on GOG.com!
Aren't these games for daft wee lassies?

JudasIscariot: GalCiv is 10 years old..not old enough? :D

Erich_Zann: If ten years is old to you, you're too young :-)
I remember when the original Fallout graced actual store shelves and in a big box :D
Can anybody give me a honest and non-biased review \ impression on the game \ series? I love point and click, I love horror and I love good stories.
Should I give this one a try?

jamyskis: I tried that with some hidden object game I got in a Steam bundle a long time ago. "Samantha Swift" I believe it was called and she struggled with the single words, so full dialogue is out of the question for now. Besides, I don't see her often enough to give her detailed lessons :-p
I'm playing Day Of The Tentacle with my son to train his English skills :-D

I think Timelord gave a nice overview. Don't really think the series is horror though.

It's Nancy or Slender for me...
Looks like Nancy gets the upper hand...
An unexpected release. Not sure if the Nancy Drew games are really good adventures, but I might give them a try.

Erich_Zann: Isn't this some casual "hidden object" stuff or am I confusing it with something else ?

Anyway, no old games this week, right when I'm broke. Perfect timing lads :-)

I think the game Galactic Civilizations is much older than 10 years, the windows version was actually a release of the OS/2 version from an age when stardock is a OS/2 only shop supporting OS/2 platform until IBM decided to end retail sales of OS/2.
Unexpected release. Will be researching. Looks like it is fairly decent from just a quick glance at Amazon. Wishted for the moment.

triock: Geez, If you think the game is hardcore cause you can die in it, something's wrong with you. :P
avatar
JMich: Depends actually. Do you know that failure will cause you death? Do you have enough hints to avoid said death? Does picking left instead of right kills you? Does missing an item on screen 2 of the game causes you to be unable to finish it? Does using item A instead of item B to solve a puzzle cause you to fail 3 hours later?
And opposite actually, I consider any adventure game in which you can't die not hardcore enough ;)
You cannot get stuck, and things that cause you death or failure of the case are usually quite obvious and you have to "confirm" if you want to do it. Like in Message in the Haunted House (or something like that, too lazy to google), I was stupid enough to untie the rope that held the lighting in place, but you had to do three moves to untie it and Nancy told the first two times that "She doesn't think this is a good idea".

Another time, you venture into a dark hole, again having to proceed three times to trigger the trap, and Nancy doesn't stop wailing that it's too dark and you should come back with a lighting source.

I think if you're after horror then Slender is probably the better choice, but the ND title is probably better as an adventure game (in fairness I haven't played Slender but I've seen some gameplay and it doesn't seem especially varied).

I'd recommend Legend of the Crystal Skull or perhaps Ghost Dogs of Moon Lake as a better first taste of the series if you fancy a bit of horror, although none really strays far into that territory. They're more Scooby Doo, although the villains do like to try and kill you :)

(thanks JMich! :)

A good way of trying them might be to pick any game from maybe 9 onwards - the earlier ones are a little less polished - that you're not too interested in playing to read a walkthrough of and see what you think. That'd give you a strong idea of the puzzles and gameplay you'll find in pretty much any other ND title, although bear in mind the games are variable. Something like Danger by Design for me caught the worst of the series.

Novotnus, if you are after horror, just get Slender.

I enjoy the Nancy Drew games (titles I've played), but this title isn't the kind of terror I think you are looking for. Wait for them to release some of the newer ones, like 'Shadow at a water's edge'. That one's chilling together with 'Captive curse'.

Good for you!

When I was still teaching English in Thailand, I used point and click adventure games for EFL students with higher level language skills and HOG games for those who need to learn simple vocabulary.

They're a GREAT way to teach kids English as they often don't think that they're actually learning as they're having such a blast with the game :)
