These little grey cells. It is up to them.--Agatha Christie

Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor, a non-linear puzzle-packed adventure featuring the teen detective's most ominous and mystical case ever, is available on GOG.com, for only $5.99.

A shadow has befallen the Blackmore Manor and its inhabitants. The staff whispers of a curse and there are evident signs of witchcraft to be found around the property. There's an angry howling in the nights and there's no way that it can be simply attributed to wind. Something is very, very wrong in the old British mansion and it seems that everyone living there, or merely passing through, puts their life in a grave danger. Luckily Linda Penvellyn, the lady of the house, managed to call for help before she was struck down with strange illness. Who did she call? Why, of course you--Nancy Drew!

Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor is an adventure game featuring the famous teen detective. The Blackmoor Manor that serves as the scene to the mystery you'll be solving is an intriguing place, and its exploration is both challenging and enjoyable--even more so, that the game doesn't force any particular order in which you must solve the puzzles. Speaking of puzzles, there's much variation to them so if you're stuck at one, you'll always get the chance to change the pace and come back to the problematic part later. With a story focusing on things like witchcraft, curses and lycanthropy, this is the darkest of the Nancy Drew games, but it's still well within limits of content appropriate for the young gamers.

Power up those little gray cells and solve the incredible mystery presented in Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor, for only $5.99 on GOG.com!
Isn't this some casual "hidden object" stuff or am I confusing it with something else ?

Anyway, no old games this week, right when I'm broke. Perfect timing lads :-)

GalCiv came out in 2003 (as mentioned by Judas already), and Nancy Drew came out in 2004.
As to if this is a hidden object game or not, Nancy Drew has over 30 titles, some of the newer ones are HOG. This seems like a proper P&C game, though I've not played it, and I've no idea how hardcore it is. Screenshots look like it might be worth it though.

Definitely not hardcore. :P

Not rule34 hardcore, but Sierra hardcore. I'll quote RichieBerry

RichieBerry: I actually have one of these games on disc. The Deadly Device, I think. The only thing I remember about it is that after I made a mistake once, Nancy got blown up. o.O Don't think I played it much after that...

Geez, If you think the game is hardcore cause you can die in it, something's wrong with you. :P
The Nancy Drew games are your typical P&C adventure games, picked up a few in the past to play with my niece but never actually got around to it.
Yay for Nancy Drew being here!

And no, these aren't hidden object games, but real point & click adventure games. They are licensed off the Nancy Drew line of novels.

Since Nancy Drew has always been more female aimed, I guess it's fair that most guys have never heard of it.

A trailer of one of their newer games, if you want a look at the adventure aspects -

Yeah, I was a pretty young kid at the time, but it kind of freaked me out. And the game I played started with a murder (which I had totally forgotten. Wikipedia remembers this game much better than I do.) This Curse of Blackmoor Manor doesn't seem to start off with a murder, but a review quoted in Wikipedia calls it "non-linear," which sounds right. I remember being confused most of the time (again, I was young).

Depends actually. Do you know that failure will cause you death? Do you have enough hints to avoid said death? Does picking left instead of right kills you? Does missing an item on screen 2 of the game causes you to be unable to finish it? Does using item A instead of item B to solve a puzzle cause you to fail 3 hours later?
And opposite actually, I consider any adventure game in which you can't die not hardcore enough ;)

Ok, to make it clear - these games are not even close to being hardcore like e.g. Maupiti Island. :P
Well done GOG, just what Romiras has been waiting for.

RS1978: Great to see this one here, I hope the others will join the GOG catalogue soon, too. ;)
Agreed :)

Love point and click adventure games and the Nancy Drew series is one of the best there is.

Awesome addition. Will be buying this soon.

Thanks GOG :)

No, they're point and click games and they're very good. A bit like the Sherlock Holmes series but with a female protagonist.

Nice to get a new game with a female character for a change :)

tburger: Eee...I like Point & Clicks but I see almost 30(!) games in the series. So how good are those games? Never heard someone included them in Point & Click you must play....
I'm a big fan of P&C adventures too, and have to confess I've played the first 18 or so of these so far...

(hey, it's hard to find new detective adventures; that's my excuse and I'm sticking to it ;)

They're actually not a bad series but do vary between good titles and the occasional duff game. But certainly they are all 'proper' adventure games rather than casual or HO titles (there's a couple of separate Nancy Drew HO titles, these aren't them and that isn't part of the gameplay in these). Oddly they have some challenging instant death moments you maybe wouldn't expect to find, often right at the end of a game. Each also has one or two mini-game chores you have to do but only a few are even remotely tricky and all are short. Normally you're traditional puzzle solving or exploring.

Generally most ND games are at least fine enough to play if you want a mystery adventure, some are really quite good games. Just pick one to try with a setting or story that sounds more interesting and be prepared not to have your mind blown too far by many unexpected twists.

----

As for Curse of Blackmoor Manor, I can see why this title was picked first, it's a pretty nice one from the series with strong non-linearity and it's a very popular ND game (though I think it gets some of that love for the English mansion setting, which for someone from the UK just gives you a laugh..).

Others that IMO stood out as particularly good were Last Train to Blue Moon Canyon and Legend of the Crystal Skull, I'd recommend either of them for anyone curious to try the series if you want to see it's best gameplay.
