Hack and slash like there's no tomorrow!

Hammerwatch, a fast-paced fantasy hack-and-slash with exciting multi-player modes and lots of pixelated nostalgia, is available 20% off on GOG.com. That's only $7.99 for the first week!

Hacking is fun, slashing is too! In a fantasy world what else should you do? Go, grab a hammer, a mace, or a sword, and strike against all evil, corruption, and woe. There's bound to be some riches to find on your way, so remember: loot bodies of all that you slay. Take some friends on adventure, strength in number lies, just don't linger too long when a companion dies. Whatever freaks cross our path with their devious tricks, we'll dismantle their pixels with stabs, jabs, slashes, and kicks. Dungeons, oh sweet dungeons, let us answer your call--experience points and glory, that's the true hero's goal.

Hammerwatch is a modern indie game with the heart of a classic. The main idea--conquering dungeons and other formidable locations--is almost as old as computer gaming itself. The execution, however, makes it a perfect pick for contemporary gamers as well. With fast-paced, dynamic gameplay full of nice ideas, optional local and online multi-player, and even a scenario editor that allows for creation of your very own adventures from scratch (including new graphics!), this little pixelated gem can bring you hours, and hours of nostalgic hack-and-slash fun!

Unleash the pixelated fantasy mayhem with all the right RPG flavors with Hammerwatch, for only $7.99 on GOG.com. The 20% discount offer lasts until Thursday, August 29, at 9:59AM GMT.

TheJadedOne: Downloaded the beta to see if I would like this game at all. (From the video it looks like rather than your character being an "adventurer" or anything sane, they are a suicidal maniac.) Found out the beta requires .NET Framework (got an error message when I tried to run it), and on x64 (at least according to Microsoft) that's a 2GB install. I can't really spare the hard-drive space just to try this game right now (I'm already below 10% free space -- will be getting a new rig soon hopefully).

Does the full game also require .NET Framework? If so, the "Minimum system requirements" on the gamecard are a bit misleading as it says "Hard Drive: 300 MB available space", which (it would seem) will be completely inadequate if you need to install .NET Framework on your x64 box to play the game.
Yeah but lot of people have it installed by default i imagine

And I expect a lot of people here on GOG also already have support for OpenGL 1.4, but they list that as a requirement. I don't see why they shouldn't list .NET Framework 4 (or later?) as a requirement if it is in fact a requirement.

If .NET Framework were explicitly listed as a requirement, then of course GOG wouldn't need to include the framework's space in the game's hard drive space requirements. But if .NET Framework is not going to be listed as a requirement (even though it is one), then they should at least boost the hard drive space requirement to reflect the fact that some people will need that much more space if they want to play the game.

park_84: Gauntlet?
I'm glad to see I wasn't the only person who thought that from the screenshots.

This looks good. Thankfully it's on discount for a week to think over getting it now.

Hard drive requirement imho should only really include install size & total space needed including temporary files during install. Is .NET listed as a recommended or purely optional install for windows? (cant remember)
If this was going to be an issue, surely it would have been brought up previously on other games which may or may not need .NET ?

I'm running Vista Home Premium SP2 (with all of the default installation options as far as I can remember). If I try to run the Hammerwatch beta, I get a "To run this application, you must first install one of the following versions of the .NET Framework" message.

Anyways, .NET Framework 4 wasn't released by MS until 2010 and I installed my OS in 2008 (Vista was already at SP1 by then), so there's no way .NET 4 was included with my OS. (And of course the game card says it supports Windows XP, which dates way before .NET 4.)

I suspect that not as many games depend on .NET as you might be presuming. (I have installed/played a lot of games on my current box, and this is the first time I've run into this issue for any game I purchased or was considering purchasing [meaning "tried a beta/demo"].)

The game was written in C#, hence the requirement for the .NET framework. There isn't a way around that, it's the only way that your system will know how to interpret the game.

I played this months ago when the beta (alpha maybe?) was released on tigsource. I found it to be really promising and enjoyable, but at the same time it lacked replay value, the save system is screwy, and the game became kindof dull playing by myself. I definitely saw a lot of fun value playing with friends locally, though I worry about the save system.

The best thing that they could do for the game, imo, is to add randomly generated maps. I think at this point it's a little late, but maybe adding another gameplay mode that uses random maps would really kick up the replay value of the game. That said, randomly generated content is challenging to do and hard to retrofit back into a game where it wasn't built into place early on, so I wouldn't expect to see this any time soon. In the meantime, playing as another class offers some variation, but not enough for me to be excited about.

Fortunately the developers are pretty responsive towards complaints and agree on most points, they are still actively posting on tigsource and have been open about their sales results. According to them, their sales success will allow them to improve the game and add more stuff to it, which is relieving to hear. They also seem to agree with the biggest complaints and indicated they are working on them, which is great.

I think the game has a lot of potential. I was really surprised to see it released so early, but it's definitely a buy for me and I hope to see more added to the game in the future.

So are they actually working on trying to get random map generation into the game?

Not that I'm aware, it's been recommended a few times on tigsource, but I gather it's too late in development to go back and add it easily. One of the developers did say he believed replay ability was an issue and was hoping to improve it.
