OldFatGuy: EDIT: Can I do a letter on notepad? I don't even have Word anymore because all of my other computers are on the mend right now, and nothing on this laptop. Seems like you can type anything you want, there's just no formatting stuff built in I guess. Notepad should do the trick.

Novotnus: Use Open \ Libre Office. Does almost the same things MS Office does and it's free :)
Or just use Wordpad/Write. Not quite as full-featured as the behemoths Word and Libre/OpenOffice Write, but might very well be capable enough. No spelling correction though.

Letter done, form done, now just need to make copies and mail them.

Wish my mother luck, please. She soo doesn't deserve this because of me.
There's more drama in oldfatguy threads than any soap opera or any relationship I've ever been in. x)
Best of luck to you and your mom. Fingers crossed for a positive outcome for you!
Sounds like you've received some excellent advice. I also wish you the best in getting your form accepted.

While I can appreciate the stress these circumstances have put you through, it doesn't make you a horrible human being and it certainly isn't worth throwing in the towel (so to speak). Sounds like you have the love and compassion of your mother. In the end, things will work out. Sure, you'll kick yourself for the aggravation. Just take care of business and get it done. :D

samlii: As for useful avenues the only one I have to add is send a note to your congress person. I know many people who have gotten their congress person to lean a little bit on the state side of things and have many things get better.
Excellent suggestion, and one I'd put ahead of my own to contact the press. This is a great path for recourse, and often politicians are very responsive when elder citizens are involved.

Wait until he gets amnesia and then his evil twin has an affair while pretending to be him. ;)

IAmSinistar: . And as a late recourse if things don't turn out (but hopefully they will), you could try to engage your local press on the issue. Taxes are a hot-button issue and you could possibly get some press about this snafu that would result in a more favourable negotiation. But as I say, wait first until the verdict comes back from the assessor. It may be far less grim than you first anticipated.
^^This^^

You might contact the mayor's office if it doesn't get resolved. Explain what happened and give them the opportunity to get some good press by helping out an elderly member of the community...

samlii: I agree with most of the other people, I know it looks bleak, but you can't sweat it just yet. Its not certain until all your avenues are exhausted.

As for useful avenues the only one I have to add is send a note to your congress person. I know many people who have gotten their congress person to lean a little bit on the state side of things and have many things get better.
Also failing a local resolution... ^^THIS^^... higher level government can be very, very helpful though they have no power over local issues. But a call from a congressman to the mayors office might spur some action if your own attempts do not bear fruit.

Failing all that, then go to the local press... nothing like some bad press to egg a politician into fixing a problem - especially one like mistreating the elderly.

OldFatGuy: Oh man oh man oh man I am such a complete asshole. I cannot believe this, I am freaking out so badly I'm putting this on the damned intertoobz but I've got to SCREAM SOMEWHERE.

Oh man. My stupid forgetfulness has cost my mother THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS, literally, and I don't think I can live with that.. I know I can't repay it.

I simply can't believe I'm so stupid. April 1. APRIL FUCKING FIRST. Have all paperwork in by APRIL FUCKING FIRST.

Man this is MAY FIRST. I can't goddamn believe it. Thousands in extra taxes because I'm forgetful.

OMG this just might be the one that breaks the camels back. I don't think I can live with this.

No need to respond to this, all the "don't worry everything will be fine" comments in the world aren't making this one right, I just need to get it off my chest and public and I can't walk outside and just scream it. Probably close to seven thousand dollars, and while she's not poor, this, THIS will hurt. Big time.

And after all she, and the rest of my family, have done for me.

I so don't deserve to live.
You feel guilty, you feel badly about the situation, you recognize and appreciate what your family has done for you. If you didn't feel those things, then you would qualify as being a fucking asshole, and THAT would be much more in line with the whole "I don't deserve to live" train of thought than how you really are as a person.
I can't help you even with a good advice...But I wish you luck and hope you will be able to solve this.
You must look for a tax lawyer.

Okay, now that I took an emotional dump on the forums (sorry) the only thing to do is to give away some games for putting up with said dump....

Sooo, how about a nice three game multi-pack for the winner, including these three games (ALL STEAMY)

Tank Operations, European Campaign

Tropico 3 Gold

HOARD Complete Pack

First person to identify the playing card in the attached image, in an UNEDITED POST, wins all three.

TWO GUESSES PER POST, unlimited posts, but only UNEDITED POSTS considered, even if your post is "merged" with your last one because 10 minutes haven't elapsed and no one else has posted since your last one. That makes it an edited post, and thus, not considered.

And again, for those unaware, you can click on the image in this post, and the image in the final post where the card is revealed, and it will open up two tabs next to each other where you can click on the images quickly and see they are identical with the only difference being one has the card obliterated with pen marks from the snipping tool app.

OH, and one more thing just to clarify:

If you win, THEY ARE YOUR CODES. YOU MAY DO WITH THEM AS YOU WISH. There are no conditions.
