Why? it is not my fault it's absolute, diabolically shite! I mean it controls sooo... oh god... sooo horrible! :P
Warhammer 40K: Rites of War

I loved the game itself, but the design and execution was abysmal and it was way too short. Basically it was a generic turn based strategy game set in the WH40K universe, and it was my introduction to that universe too. However, despite having an interesting story, at least at the beginning, it failed in many respects.

First, you could only play one storyline, rather than play as the different sides.
Second, the animations and sound effects were way out of sync, allowing units to move, followed by the sound of their movement, then you'd hear them fire, then see the effect. Shoddy optimisation over all.

However, despite those drawbacks, I enjoyed it and played it many times over.

While I respect your right to your opinion, I hope you'll recognise that most people here would likely disagree. Personally I found it to be wonderfully executed - especially the experience system where levelling up a weapon really did make a difference to how well you could handle it.

But I appreciate that it wasn't for everyone.

Ah but the little things like that are alright when they're handled properly. But I find it hard to believe this experienced fellow cannot handle a gun. It is a part of his job, so shouldn't he already be trained?

He wasn't exactly experienced though. If you followed the story at the beginning he just woke up with these new Nanotech implants.Paul is the experienced one.
American football.....

Or did you just mean video games? :)

Hmm maybe I missed something, I always was under the impression he had some form of training. Even then though, you shouldn't have to spend skills to get that right. Just general experience should be a big factor in that I would think. I never liked it. :P

Urnoev: Gothic 3.
snip.
. But the game still doesn't run smoothly, no matter how powerful your computer is.
I don't know, ran smoothly on all of my rigs after community patch 1.6. 1.75 only adapted it to then modern rigs (had those pin stripes all over the place).

Now to the OP.
Baldur's gate 2 - mirrored sprites for characters irritated me, certain quest/map structure wasn't as likable as in BG1. Dunno why, colour me strange.
Not exactly videogame fault, but certain changed in (A)DnD caused "meh" feeling in BG2;ToB due to epic levels. NWN1 was just one huge WTF, regardless of changes caused by 3rd Ed. which I hate with passion - IWD2, despite being based on same rulesset was much more enjoyable. KotOR too, as it inherited certain things from NWN1. I especially like shooting - bunch of people stands few metres away from each other, yet nobody can't hit anyone. Such visceral, much engagement, very interest.
Same mantra goes to Dragon Age: Origins, when playing for fighters. I literally sprained my jaw while playing that class, so I swap my character for mage, and it became a bit less painful to play.
DA2. Combat animations were such visceral, much engagement, very interest, so I just can't play it.
Mass Effect, especially 2 and 3. Not only bioware clearly showe they can't into RPG, they also demonstrated they can't into shooter.

Basically every bethesda game, mostly TES, and, sadly, Fallout 3 (and New Vegas, as collateral of things, inherited from Fallout 3 (engine, ballistics, animations)). While looking interesting on paper, every installment (excluding older Arena and Buggerfall), had a lot of WTF elements. Ironically Skyrim happened to be decent Gothic, and yes, I mean those little "life simulation" thingies, like people trying to look like they are working in fields, with tools, with objects, etc. Good, in 2011 Bethesda finally was able to copy Pyranha Bytes' decade old ideas. And finally NPCs doesn't look like they have bipolar disorders:
- Hey, you, we urgently need to speak!
- ...
- Get lost, I don't want to see you!
And combat there just... ugh. There is good first person melee game, called Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Which is the only FP melee game I like.
Plus, finally Skyrim is about open spaces, northern nature, why force us into catacombs again? I'm tired from them in Daggerfall. Stahp!

Almost any game with QTE, minus Witcher, as "QTE" there was combat-related, was subtle, and easy to use. In fact that's the only QTE I miss, because I like it more than clickfest in W2. Which is still better than competitors.

Almost any game from Ubisoft where you have to climb towers. Okay, I'll broaden this - almost every improperly ported a.k.a. "multiplatform" game. .
Take Assassins Creed. This is not series of games where good assassins fights bad templars, it's a series of games where people fights with bad controls.
Far Cry isn't much better, FC2 had those respawning checkpoints, jamming guns and... What else? FC3 lost those features, but if I saved game somewhere, I want to find my character exactly at same spot I left him, not at nearest respawn point. And weapon system there is just another reason to suspect cross-contamination between bEAware and ubi. Plus game's attempts to access dem internets.

Splinter Cell 2, and especially 4. Something wasn't right with them, especially SC4.

Watch_dogE. "Hacking is your weapon". If "hacking" is when you shoot something from AK, then it is.

Resident Evil 4, which was horribly ported to PC. Resident Evil 5, because it was difficult to play Single-player, and RE6, because it doesn't understand what kind of game it is.

Most things from Peter Molyneux. I meat latest installments.

Battlefields. triple-eh games that work (actually don't) worse than some titles from Steam's Early Access. Such quality, much entertainment, very pricey.

X-Rebirth. Also needs "Early Alpha build" badge instead of release.

DE:HR: Director's cut. Who cut the director? Apparently he was bleeding profusely, as this "improved" version worse than original.

Stalker. That one, with dots. All three of them.

Wasteland 2's interface, skills, and, especially, weapon system, I wonder if same guy set Browning High-Power's weight in Fallout Tactics at 6 pounds:D.. Despite this, still one of my favorites of this year.

He did have some form of training, which is why he is "trained" with pistols by default when he starts. He does know how most weapons work, but he is not particularly adept at it (unless you spend XP). I'd say it makes sense a rookie cop isn't able to handle every single weapon in the world as if he was some sort of Duke Nukem.

It isn't for everyone, but it worked really well for me.

and yet he couldn't hit a barn door if he was standing 2 inches from it. No thanks!

As mentioned, I think others just got something from Deus Ex that you didn't. Personally I never found the controls that bad, even while playing on Realistic. But this is always the case. No game fits 100% of gamers.

Oh, he could, provided he had time to aim. He can't run&gun, though.

If you want a pure shooter, you should not go to Deus Ex. Sure, it's far from perfect, but I think it does what it aims to do pretty damn well. I fail to see how that execution was horrible, unless you try to consider it a Doom clone. If you do, it is indeed a horrible doom clone, same as Assassin's Creed is a horrible Splinter Cell clone or Planescape torment is a horrible Diablo clone.

I'm not asking you to like it, but I disagree with the reasons you are using to diss it.

Basically that. Although I always end up customizing controls quite a bit, the game uses a lot of keys that weren't easy to use (the defaults for scope, laser sight and such were pretty bad IIRC)

Many indie games like Spoiler Alert and Evoland. Both games too short! At least evoland make me laugh so much. Spoiler alert lvls are very short and the game could use more items or skills to exploit the idea.

Both games still being recommend if you are interesting in something different.

The joys of playing on a PC! ;-)

cecil: Brutal Legends, Overlord or any action game that is also an RTS in third person. It's decent action hack and slash marred by imprecise camera controls which makes moving your units for the RTS elements harder then need be.
I debated mentioning Brutal Legend but since it's already here... ; ) The premise is great, it's a funny game, and there is a lot to enjoy. But the execution feels a bit sloppy. Though maybe that's part of the point, given the background material - "We make our own rules, maaaan... and then we break those, too!"
