I finally bought Half-Life 2 so I can install the Black Mesa mod and I am amazed that a mod group made something of this magnitude so I like to ask what is your favorite video game remakes.

Of course Black Mesais number 1 on my list, second is Resident Evil 1 and third is Metal Gear Solid 1.
I don't recall playing that many, really.

Monkey Island 2's is awesome though.
Not sure what qualifies as a re-Make but I am going with - Wizardry I-II-III: Story of Llylgamyn
The first one that comes to mind for me is The Ur-Quan Masters.
That really rekindled my love for Star Control II all those years ago.
Bionic Commando: Rearmed. Great remake of great game.

I hope you bought Half-Life 2 to play HL 2 and not Black Mesa, which only needs the Source engine, which it will download itself once you install it.

As for my favourite remake, it's currently a toss between Ultima 5: Lazarus and the Ultima 6 Project. Both utilise the Dungeon Siege engine and both mods added a lot in terms of richness of narrative, side-quests and music, amongst other little titbits.

While not officially a remake, Wing Commander Saga, whose story runs parallel to Wing Commander 3, also gains my top praise, as it feels like an AAA game, just made by very determined fans.
Romancing SaGa

aside from the art style being a bit weird due to trying to keep SD proportions for some reason, and the dungeons being a bit worse than the original

still want to play the DS remakes too.
I'm playing through Persona 3 portable right now. I never played the original, but I think this game has rekindled my love for JRPGs.
Pitfall for sure, all of them.
Does Metroid Mission Zero count?

tinyE: and TR Aniversary
Oh yeah, that one's awesome.
Gotta say, I think the only remake I've ever played was Monkey Island 1/2 and the first Broken Sword. Monkey Island stayed as awesome as it always was and Broken Sword... well, you probably know.

The Ur-Quan masters is not so much a remake as a port, but it is a fantastic game. The recent HD version of it is also amazing! They really kept to the style of the original graphics, and simply recreated them in a much higher resolution. I highly recommend it.

When talking about good remakes, I have to mention The Settlers II: 10th Anniversary Edition. That's the proper way to do a remake. Update the technology, change the things in the interface that didn't work, and keep everything else, including the graphical design, despite the change from 2D to 3D. I was so impressed when I tried it.

Yeah, you don't need any commercial game to play Black Mesa. It just needs the Source SDK (2007 version I think), which you can get from Steam for free.

That said, HL2 is a fun game, so your money is definitely not wasted.

Why has no one mentioned Lazarus yet? I'ts an awesome remake of Ultima 5! Not only way better graphics but it was also a bit expanded with respect to the original game. In a very good way. So it is a true Ultima.

The same goes for it's spiritual sequel the Ultima 6 Project. Both are Dungeon Siege mods and if you own Dungeon Siege, you should get Lazarus and try it out.
Does A Link to the Past count as a remake of The Legend of Zelda? Does every Zelda game count as a remake of its predecessors?
The Monkey Island Special Editions (1 & 2)... ^_^
