Making room for a file cabinet, general reorganization, getting rid of crap that hasn't seen the light of day in years - you know, typical holiday stuff.

When we moved Up Here from Down There some 10 years ago, there was a tragic event I now refer to as the Great PC Game Purge of 2004. Stupid, just getting rid of crap by throwing it in the garbage. But some stuff was spared and I recovered a few gems I had completely forgotten about:

Kohan - Immortal Sovereigns. I liked this game but had crash problems so I never got to finish. I'll install it soon to give it another go

Freelancer. Huh - thought I chucked that one since it felt a bit meh at the time. Another one I'll have to try out again, since so many people say it's a great game.

Homeworld. Another one I struggled with, can't remember why. Should give it another go.

Perfect General 2. Not sure if this will run. I certainly spent a ton of time playing it in the 90s.

Steel Panthers. Not really forgotten, but I did find the disk and manual.

Half-Life. Another one not quite forgotten. I don't know why I hung on to this one - on two different PCs I had game-stopping bugs early in the game and never got more than an hour or two into it. But here it sits, waiting for my next Charlie Brown-ish attempt to play it.

Of the games I did keep (25-30 titles? Maybe?) most of the boxes went bye-bye. Dammit, but at least I kept the disks, manuals, maps, and other add-ons for most of them. Hopefully I still have the installation key codes for all of them.
Yeah key codes are a pain in the a**. That is why I keep the boxes, easier to maintain everything there. The collector in me won't let me throw away those big old pc game boxes anyways =P Let alone any game boxes.....

I have boxes stored on a shelf as well and always get pissed when someone moves them. In todays world of DLCs the younger gen can't understand why I keep ahold of all the boxes and disks. They look nice sitting there and easily reminds me what I have to play without having to look at all the icons in a folder.

Icons just don't spark the memory of what you are about to play whereas a box gives you plenty of visuals to remind you just why you kept the game.
When I was a kid in St. Louis we found a millstone buried in the back yard about 5 feet across. We still have it at the new place. Fucker must way over 3000 pounds.
when i was young we threw out the boxes and put all the games into a small filing box or cd case. who would have thought box art would go the way of the dodo? sigh. to have those boxes! just like barbie and other toy boxes too I suppose. I still have the boxes for the NES games though. not as nice, but still.

And back then, they put a lot of effort into game boxes so they would look cool. They are great works of art. Unfortunately, I just don't have the space for that kind of stuff.

megaman box art would disagree
those are bloody hideous sans pal megaman 2
I didn't have a basement, but back in 2004 when my house in london was being sold, I got two black bags one for rubbish and one for items I wanted to keep. anyway I lost most of my boxed amiga and pc games. somewhere in the process I must have put stuff I wanted to keep into the rubbish bag and vice versa.

My big bag of stuff I wanted to keep ended up being a big bag of rubbish., and the bag of stuff I wanted to thorw away was my good stuff, which I thought was rubbish ended up in the skip.

[got there in the end too much shandys]

is that what you call Licurg off the forum?! ;D
Whoa. I just opened my basement for the first time in years and found Elvis in there. :O
I recently knocked over a stack of games and lost my picross 3d cart which was lying around loose.

While trying to find it, I ended up finding my Lufia Ruins of Lore cart I lost. (I've really only lost two games ever in my life, Zelda OoA and Lufia RoL) I bought a new used copy for five bucks since I wanted to finish it eventually, but couldn't bear the thought of restarting since I was pretty close to the end. It had fallen off of a table onto the keyboard shelf of my desktop computer (which was pushed all the way in since I hadn't used in years).

So I ended up going back and finishing it while I still could, and traded in the spare.

I haven't found find my picross 3d cart yet though :(

oh gods dont remind me
tekken 1 is rather ass too
We don't have a basement, but going through the attic or garage often does have happy surprises in it, because we forgot what we stored in there. lol
We live in small pigeon hole flats. Things like basements, attics, do not exist. :)
