Except when you do that, you only get the 32x32 size tiles for desktop.

I assume you are talking about Windows 8 RT for tablets?

What exactly is a live tile? Is that the one that changes to show you up to date stuff like the news one?

I think OP just wanted static tiles, that functioned like shortcuts. I think. Perhaps I had better check.

And to Elenaire: Not everything is "function". It's nice to have some aesthetics too. I know I can just type the app name, and that's even what I do, but I still whant the pretty tile in my home screen. Just compare in the attached screenshot.
