If there is one thing that Military shooters like Battlefield and Arma needs is a deep, character driven story like in Band of Brothers/Pacific and Apocolypse Now.

I am aware that there are the Brothers in Arms games, but I want that kind of game in the modern setting and of course it has to be tactical like Rainbow Six.

Do guys guys agree there should a modern setting military fps like this?

That was my first thought too.
THERE IS!!!!!
It's not all that new but man it's as good as WW2 FPS story telling gets.

Brothers in Arms: Road to Hill 30

You play Sgt Matt Baker of the 101st Airborne Division, dropped and scattered behind enemy lines previous to the invasion of Normandy. How good is the story you ask? Matt Baker is a real guy who was really with the 101 who really got scattered behind enemy lines. The entire game is based around a minute by minute account of his eight day ordeal through to hell and back that proved pivitol in the taking of the French coast and eventually France and eventually Germany. They say the characters are designed to actually look like the real men but I'm gonna have to take their word on this one, I've never seen a picture of Matt Baker.

There is also a sequal to this game but I honestly don't know anything about it.

SHIT! Ninjad again by an edit.

Disregard my post :)

Not actually FPS.

Edit: Of the top of my head I'd suggest giving Call of Juarez 1 and 2 a shot. Not extremely deep but definitely above the average FPS in terms of characters and story.
Edit2: nvm, I saw the modern setting requirement now

Can GOG just release that? Every time I tried to play it, it would freeze my computer and force me to do a hard reset.

(Translation: I never got past the first 10s of gameplay, Double Translation: Glad I got it when CompUSA was going out of business sale)

Well no, but it's a modern-day military shooter with a relatively deep plot - it ticks most of the boxes!

I got a patched up re-release a year or so ago from Amazon. It works fine for me but to be honest I only played it 1/3 of the way through before I got onto an RPG fix.
Spec Ops: The Line is pretty much the only game that comes close to fitting the op's bill. it was a commerical failure, though, so we're not likely to see anything like it again.

what about Vietcong and Vietcong 2? they definitely have an Apocalypse Now vibe. then again, 1960s/70s Vietnam is not what most people would consider "modern".

I also think there have been some Gulf War stuff put out. I refuse to play those for ethical reasons that have ZERO place in this forum so I'll drop it. Either way, there are some Gulf War games out there and I they 'might' have stories.

i only know of Conflict: Desert Storm 1 & 2. but they're third-person shooters and don't really have a story.

That is probably the closest you'll ever get.
+1 for Spec Ops: The Line, thought this is not a game that will make you happy while playing it.

Didn't the original ArmA / Op Flashpoint have some attempt at story in it? I never got very far but I remember cut scenes in the back of armered transports etc...
I'd say Spec Ops: The Line as well.
