Ah Windows, the heart and soul of all PC gaming (imo), I've been growing up with Windows since man Windows 95 or 98 I guess but it was either of those and I was only 6 or 7 or 8 years old when I first became aware of it, then my family got a Sony Vaio laptop running Windows XP (never experianced Windows 2000 or Me) then we got 2 computers in the last year and a quarter, an acer laptop for me, and a very good desktop for my brother, both using Windows 7 (I used Windows Vista,but for a very short time,did not fully used it) so tell me my fellow GOGers, how was your history with MIcrosoft Windows?

I've personally experienced 3.11, 95, 98, 98SE, XP and 7, of which 7 is hands-down the best one, but that's hardly surprising.

Have had experience of 3.1, 95, 98, NT, ME, 2000, XP, Vista and 7, of them, I've had PCs with 98, XP, Vista and 7. Fave of the lot was XP and it is still is.

Best so far has to be windows 7. It's fastest and most secure windows that i have ever used.

Have experienced 3.1, NT, 95, 98+SE, 2000, ME, XP, 7, Server 2003 and Server 2008 - managed to bypass Vista completely... :)

Favourite is probably XP but only because I haven't properly got to grips with 7 yet!

Of course they keep adding better stuff and all that, but going from one version to the next never had as much 'wow' as going from DOS to 3.11...

Used 3.11 inside OS/2, then Windows 95 OSR 2 for a while (alongside OS/2), then Windows 2000, XP, now using Vista x64 on my main PC, but I have 7 on my laptop and HTPC.

I don't have real favourites here. 3.11 was crap, but the rest are fine OS's. I found things to dislike each of them when I started, but once I got used to them they were fine. Vista had driver problems at the start, but I've been using it for years and it's stable and works well on my hardware.

I've used at least:

Win3.1 (or was it Windows for Workgroups actually?)
Win95
Win98SE
Win2000
WinXP
Win7
Win8 preview for half an hour or so, if that counts

While Win7 is quite probably technically the best Windows ever (being the newest etc.), the stupid sh*t that comes with Aero makes me still prefer WinXP, so I'll nominate XP as the Windows OS I was the happiest with. Nowadays it may be too insecure for heavy using, but ok for gaming.

Win2000 is close second, because even for games it was pretty much the same as WinXP. It even had almost the same compatibility modes for Win9x games. I rate it lower mostly because for some graphics cards it didn't receive quite as new drivers, and its MS support ended much earlier than for XP (even though it was only one year older than XP).


Still, of them all, Win9x, especially Win98SE, have a special place in my heart. Microsoft had to carefully move forwards with Windows (also for PC gaming), yet at the same time not alienating PC gamers which had lots of older DOS games.

Win9x was quite perfect for that purpose, with its good backwards compatibility with DOS games, and at the same time introducing components which made Windows gaming viable at last (which in turn made it possible for home users to later move to better Windows OSes like XP etc.).

Wow, suddenly games could work fine with non-3Dfx 3D accelerators, or with sound cards which were not HW-compatible with Adlib/Soundblaster! And goodbye to CH Flightsticks, welcome much superior USB flightsticks and gamepads from various companies, with their vastly improved accuracy and features (number of buttons, more axis etc.).

I guess online gaming also became much more viable with Win9x. So, all in all I'd call Win9x as the biggest single achievement of Microsoft. It shaped and enhanced especially PC gaming the most.

used 3.11, 95, 98 (in various stages), Millenium (d'oh), XP, Vista and W7x64.

W7x64 wins by a mile. XP was great too. Vista felt clunky and forced. Millenium was grotesque.
