It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

rtcvb32: Non-backlight ones are better probably if you're going to be out and about during the day more, that is assuming it's epaper and not some odd dot matrix thing like the Gameboy used..
It's about choice. If you never read inside, that's fine but otherwise I would get one with backlight. And yes, only pick one with e-paper type display to soften the effect on your eyes.

rtcvb32: Hmmm... You know i bought a tablet not too long ago, it was $80 on special at the time, and it works perfectly good as an e-reader... When i have time to e-read that is. Although recommendation, if you're going to be using it for PDF files, you should pre-render the pages as individual images unless it's a powerful tablet, i've tried to read some D&D PDF files and takes like a minute per page to load, while pre-rendering is almost instant (although you lose the ability to search and index the book).
Indeed. My Nexus 7 handles PDFs pretty ok but not my Kindle, it crashed twice when I tried to open one with over 150 pages. Lack of ability to search, highlight, taking notes etc.. is something I don't want to lose though.

I don't get it either. It might have been an unusual joke we didn't get but I don't see the problem; it's not like the OP mentioned the name of his friend.
The OP asks opinions on what he should have someone buy for him before a visit and the rest of the thread turns into a moral crusade, a chat about prostitution, a plea for religious enlightenment and an itemized discussion of electronic entertainment devices... all at once. It gets the WIN! from me, it sure does.

This forum is so damned amazing. It's like listening to your favorite song... while someone peels layers of your skin off with with a hot steak knife.

I don't mind the crazy directions threads take. That's half the fun!

Nirth: You must have read misinformation. Moving ebooks to a Kindle through USB is perfectly possible and it's called side loading; the only down side is that they won't pop up in your amazon cloud. If you don't care about 3G or Wi-fi then you can turn them off. I leave wi-fi off most of the time to save battery.

I can't recommend a model for you because I don't know what you want but I'll say this: Do NOT purchase one that doesn't have a backlight. The model that goes for $99 doesn't so it's the Kindle Paperwhite (without 3G) that's your best bet at $140.
See, if I chose something other than a Kindle (that was still known enough not to be shitty), with similar features (or it didn't have wi-fi or 3G or bothering me with Amazon clouds), wouldn't it be cheaper?

Even with wi-fi or 3G you need to register a Kindle device so if you don't register you won't be bothered by the online services. I'm not sure what you can do without an account but I suspect the experimental browser will work, albeit it's buggy and slow.

For around $120 you can get a Kobo Glo that supports backlighting. I would watch an in-depth review to make sure that whatever issues they found with that specific model won't bother you.

I'm going through the video (that's a long review), but I'm not sure I get the point of backlight? I don't often read outdoors (but I'm sure it'd be fun). but if I was reading a regular book, I'd probably sit in a well-lit room, or in my bed with a lamp. That's not enough?

A lamp usually only have one setting of brightness. On my Kindle Paperwhite 2 I have 20 gradations of brightness and to me that's important because I'm sensitive to too much light and it's a very big convenience so you don't have to rely on your environment for it. If it never bothered you with a physical book then I'm sure it's not too important of a feature but to have to option to use it is better than not.

You own a lot more shit than one would presume, babark.
Take the money. If there are some homeless people in your neighbourhood use some of that money to buy them something to eat. Save the rest until you encounter something you really want and that will make you happy.

Why would you presume I own shit :D.
I have a habit of extreme saving followed by rare and random ridiculous purchases. I guess it might be goofy to actually own a whip (for example), but I thought it was cool at the time (and still find random uses for it).

Don't have any homeless people in my community (or if there are, they're probably highly mobile and don't stick around for long), but when I was earning, I used to contribute to providing food and schooling for the poorer people.
Since I'm not now (or even if I was, I suppose), I don't see so much wrong with trying to find something for myself.
