u2jedi: Depends on what 80s music you listened too. Some bands defied sounding timely. The album track 'Unforgettable Fire' does not sound like an 80s song. 'All I Want Is You' does not sound like an 80s song. 'Bullet the Blue Sky' likewise.

It depends on what bands you listened to. Top 40 was very timely for the most part though. Level 52, el Debarge, still I liked those too. In small doses.

darthspudius: Actually I'd disagree there. Between the start of drum machine, sampling, lots and lots of reverb 80s music will always sound dated.

Chuck Berry, Nat King Cole, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley... now thats timeless music.

Im talking about the 80s in general. Everyone from Rod Stewart, Judas Priest and Stevie Wonder were suffering from this kind of crap. Obviously there's going to be a few exceptions (Iron Maiden - Number of the beast) but as a whole, the 80s is very dated. But atleast the music was good. Thats more then what I can say for the 90s on wards lol.
Has Maiden ever really had a bad album? Seriously. Sure some are better than others but ANY band that's been around that long is bound to put out a turd, but they never really did. Amazing.

nijuu: 80's music. Nothing beats it
This.

It was certainly 'Golden Age' for polish bands.... Lady Punk, Banda i Wanda, Lombard, KAT...What we have now is mainly crap...

As for foreign pop/disco bands (A-HA, Sandra. Modern Talking, Madonna etc) - I still enjoy their music but in comparison to nowadays’ pop/disco music they seem to me more like soothing and calming music for old farts not energizing, fast music I remember from the past :-)

Iron Maiden... bad album? My personal opinion... Piece of mind, Futureal and everything after Brave New World was frickin terrible. I don't know whats worse, Bruce trying desperately to hit the high notes (and failing), Steve harris' terrible production or generally just poor song writing.

Well I feel a little silly saying this but I actually really like that record. I think Revelations is their best song. I think Where Eagles Dare is the best opening for a metal album minus Hells Bells.

Same for Germany. The New German Wave in the early 80s was awesome. Most German music today is basically white-trash hip-hop and R'n'B, and pointless emo rock with lyrics that make absolutely no sense.

There are a few great exceptions. Everyone knows Rammstein. Die Ärzte are still awesome. Böhse Onkelz are good at what they do, never really been able get into their music though.

Although there has been a bit of a schlager revival of late. Not really my thing, although I grew up in the countryside listening to it at parties.

A-Ha was another band that didn't really make it over here, beyond one hit. Most Americans are shocked to know the band still exist. Same can be said of Simple Minds and several others. I would imagine this goes both ways and the States has huge bands that in Europe are barely even aknowledged for existing.
I consider Irish music to be timeless, but as the second poster pointed out this is all very subjective.

Oh, and the B52's.
I think its fairly safe to say most music post 90's wont be anywhere near as memorable in the future?

If you go by the numerous "70s/80s/90s music was the best! music today sucks!" posts on youtube, probably not.
In the words of Sammy Hagar and Van Halen, "Only time will tell if we stand the test of time."

I used to listen to a lot of music. Mostly rock. But these days I barely listen, and I don't know who's popular out there now.

My favorite music will probably always be film soundtracks. Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, etc. I absolutely love film scores, but I also love most other music too.

There is only one constant in German Music: Bayerische Blasmusik.
oh, and maybe Polka too
Nursery rhymes don't age.
The Beatles, no question.

In my personal opinion: Johnny Cash, Black Sabbath, Metallica WITH Cliff Burton, many other classic rock bands (like queen), a band here and there, and Jazz will and has stood the test of time.

scampywiak: Classical.
Also this.
