Yes, that is Escape from New York!
As far I know it's real. I played the German version (die Klapperschlange) a few times at a friend's house when I was young but never got past the first level, which was a run and dodge kind of level that scrolled foreground-to-background.
you had to move left and right or jump over objects.

-edit- also, the CSDB page seems to mention the wrong release date. I played this version I think:

It's not, that was off-topic. I mainly play the horror themed ones, but have played a fair amount of all others too.

Hmmm reminds me of a game I played once, but I think this isn't that game.
But you did find a hammer that could break walls.. and you had to spray pesticide or something.
I think it was a DS game...
