It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

mrkgnao: Apparently someone at GOG is reading this thread, because today they updated the offline installers for "Beholder" to match galaxy. Perhaps I should post more examples here...
avatar
Gersen: If I remember correctly some devs said some times ago that the devs have access directly to the "Galaxy" part and can upload directly updates and patches without going through Gog team, while for offline installer they need to submit the binaries to Gog to be tested and packaged, or something like that.

So probably if the devs "forget" to provide said binaries then the offline installers might end up being misalignmed with the version provided by Galaxy. I would say it might be better, if you notice such misalignment, to open a support ticket to inform Gog about it rather than posting here.
Given that GOG fixed the "Beholder" bug in under 12 hours, I would hazard a guess that they don't need the developer to build the offline installers. I expect they can do it from the galaxy binaries. I may be wrong.

As for opening a ticket, I am sorry, but I have opened (unrelated) tickets several times recently and I just find it so frustrating (not always, but enough) that I would rather avoid it.

I'm not even sure that I'll post the list here. What's the point? It's not as if it's going to prevent the next occurrence and I don't see myself reporting these bugs ad infinitum.

P.S. Dear GOG staff member: If you're reading this, you might want to note that today's update of Neverwinter Nights Enhanced Edition was partly faulty --- the German/Italian/Polish/Spanish extras each now have two links (part 1 and part 2), instead of one, with both parts pointing to the same file.

Lebostein: How I download my installers now?
avatar
XzAr_79: Unfortunately for all of us there are only two ways:
1) Downloading through your browser
2) Downloading through Galaxy (choosing "backup copy" on the the installation page).
1) is a crap
2) gog says: Galaxy is optional. Why I should install a 300 MB monster app to download installers?

Gog downloader was an easy to use thing, light and fast. In my opinion, the whole purpose of this is to force people to use Galaxy...

Telika: No need to witness anymore the trash that GOG has become, and the level of hypocrisy that runs through there.
Nothing is perfect, everything(or most things) has a downside.....GOG isn't trash(or more trash) just because of one decision.

avatar
Telika: Those who complain for GOG to change its mind about gogdownloader are deluded.
I think they are a bit in denial as well(well unless they forced GOG's hand somehow).

avatar
Telika: Just to point out the denial in the "GOG is all about freedom of choice" narrative, inherited from its different beginnings.
No business is about FULL freedom of choice.....they give you certain choices & one can either: partake of them, get them to change(very difficult usually), or not buy from them.

(They can complain/criticize such decisions as well, but that usually achieves nothing if done in forums like this in small numbers)

avatar
Telika: You can love or hate Galaxy. But claiming that GOG is honestly open to using or not using it is a shameful lie, maintained only by GOG PR and ridiculous fans.
I would posit on the opposing hand that the "GOG is going to make everyone use galaxy" stance to be something likely being pushed by more cynical/pessimistic fans/ex-fans.

==============================================

avatar
rjbuffchix: They may not want to change it back but they didn't want to get rid of the auto-playing videos either, yet they did. I've also made numerous comments before about how I didn't like them always looking to list users' number of games next to their name in reviews, and it looks like that can be hidden now too. On the flipside, there are other features they apparently refuse to budge from or bring back (GOGmixes).
It seems the stuff they did/brought back were much smaller things than this(that were easier to give to people), though.

avatar
rjbuffchix: We don't know until we try, and it's not fair for you to decree that it's a waste of time.
I was just stating my stance on things a bit, same as everyone else.

As for trying: A somewhat noble goal(more so if done in a way that would work better and not essentially be yelling at a mountain to move), but there have been 5 or so threads on this for WEEKS(and a wishlist entry, and likely more)....yet GOG hasn't budged. I honestly don't think THIS METHOD of doing it is likely going to achieve much.

avatar
rjbuffchix: You may ultimately be right, time will tell, but it sounds to me with "waste of time" you're invoking the "defeatist" mentality you've criticized me of having...
Fair enough/touche.

1. Have you tried other browsers? Or maybe you have a crap connection(which some have, sadly)?

2. It is optional(for now anyways).

Also why do people keep bringing up the size(300 MB) as if they still had 100GB HDDs? :|

.Ra: why is the browser bad?
Dunno for every user or that user, but some have bad connections/spotty internet...though a good DL manager(that works with GOG) would likely help with that(or even trying another browser).

Or they might be biased against browsers/not want to use one for some reason.

Some(in general...even me sometimes) also dislike change to varying degrees.

What the heck. Let's give a few more examples.

Note: This list is neither perfect (because it is often hard to say when the galaxy and offline versions are indeed different, so some of the games listed below may well be "false positives", even though I did try to be conservative in my listing, which means there are also "false negatives"), nor complete (because Gwent is still available on GOG, so games added to GOG in the last year are by definition missing). Do with it what you wish.

Thank you for your excellent work. Let's hope we offline users get some updates.
I really wish you'd have kept the Downloader as an option. I really prefer it to Galaxy.

Why? Because whenever I download a game through Galaxy, the download is obscenely slow. In contrast, if I use the Downloader, the download speed is super-fast.

I'm serious. I've timed it before and Galaxy generally takes two-to-three times LONGER than the Downloader to download the SAME game.

This is why I only use Galaxy to update games, which by the way, also takes longer to download in Galaxy than it did in the Downloader. The only good point Galaxy has at all is it notifies you when you have an update, as opposed to checking each game individually. Otherwise, it was practically useless for me.

And before someone suggests it, no, I don't have a crap connection. My download speeds are very fast except when downloading through Galaxy. If I had a crap connection, it wouldn't matter what I use to download, but everywhere else on the Internet (including Steam) my speeds are great. There's just something wrong with Galaxy's functionality when it comes to downloading.

avatar
Akka: First party => the consumer.
Second party => the game.
Third-party => anyone else.

Galaxy is a third party because it's neither the game nor the consumer.
lol wut

thats not it atall

1st party is teh main company or supplier
2nd party is teh consumer
3rd party is an outside company developin' or sellin' a product for said 1st party

mrkgnao: And here are some examples for Mac OS X.
I commend you and tip my hat to you for this.
--------------------------------------------------

That said, a question or two if I may: Why do some who wants such seemingly assume higher numbers/newer versions are better for everyone or add/change anything of import? What if an update breaks something for some or just fixes some spelling errors in a few places or other similar things, or takes things away?

Essentially I also like better versions in most cases, but that's IF they are actually worthwhile....sometimes an older version turns out to be the better one(like for those who liked the older dosbox game installers vs. the SCUMMVM ones).
---------------------------------------------------

(Note to all: I am actually asking the above out of genuine curiosity and to illustrate the points posted near the end......I have no bad motive behind this post, in case anyone might think this)

Nobody forces you to delete a previous version from your backups just because there is a newer version. You can keep both and install whichever you want.

I know....I was more pointing out that newer versions don't always equal better(though they often do)...but thanks for answering what I asked. It is appreciated.

(Also again thanks for trying so hard to get stuff done around here)

Great work, man.

And damn, this surely landed a heavy blow to my positive view of GOG. It's just unacceptable that they don't even bother to keep the offline installer updated while touting that Galaxy is "optional".
GOG was one of the few companies I trusted... it's pretty sad.
