In response the continued angst and arguing I see created by the use, misuse and abuse of the current system, what happens when people ask or complain about it and what happens when people try to study it, etc. I decided to propose this simple solution that works well on many other forums:

Let's just have post counts and dispense with the rep system.

I think many would agree the rep system does not really provide enough benefit to offset the issues it creates at this point without picking apart who is right, wrong or whatever. It is what it is. It keeps coming up over and over and over. It is a source of negativity and arguing on these forums. That alone is enough reason in my mind for it to be removed and replaced with a benign post count nobody can get upset about or cause anyone else any pain with.

So, if you've had enough of hearing about this stuff too or have been affected by it or for whatever reasons of your own support the idea of making this a little more positive place in this way, please make your voice heard with a vote here:

I'm not strongly for or against the rep system, or even simply removing the option to downvote, so I'm waiting more feedback from other users what are the advantages and drawbacks of this suggestion.

At this point, a very mild "I agree".
+1

Couldn't resist that. ;)

Voted for it on the condition that we still have a means of reporting spam. Don't want to give anyone fodder for advancing increased moderation under the guise of spam control. I value the free discussion here more than I dislike the squabbles caused by the rep system.

Would +/- remain but represent like/dislike of individual posts?

The current system is fine, it's just that some people take it way too seriously. Personally, I haven't witnessed any cases of abuses though I've read reports of such activity.

So for me, it really doesn't matter whether we have the rep thing or a post count. I'm pro-both.
Just remove the option to downvote and leave options of "Hide this post" and "Report spam"

There, all problems with the rep system resolved
Not pro or contra the Rep System or any changes.
A better search function is more important.
If they do changes, maybe a filter were you can set certain members on
auto hide would be nice.

Agree, I've seen it work on other forums.

Separate "hide this post" with down vote. As for the down vote itself, people take it too seriously. I think it's good it's there, people that find it bad personally has personal issues with it, it's not the members, this site or the reason behind down votes that is the actual issue.

That sounds fine to me, too. Is it on the wishlist?

Moonbeam: Good idea.
An even better idea, ignore user function. Seriously, if people have an issue with someone they should just be given the ability to hide all their posts. That'll remove any temptation to down vote continuously - this too is something that works perfectly well on other forums.

Of course the best and easiest option would be to allow people to hide rep scores. .
It would be easier if they just modified it - For example, to make it so you can't make more downreps than you have rep, which could solve the problem of multiple accounts. Would be more than enough.
Even if I cared about this I'd say that there are more pressing issues with this forum, and I'd rather that GOG attends to them first.

Leave the system, fix the people.
