Gundato: If you ignore the lack of take-off and landing, it is definitely as "realistic" as most of the 486-era games. It has only been "recently" (like, 10-15 years? Damn I feel old) that "Flight Sim" has shifted to mean "So complicated that you need to leaf through the manual just to find the right sequence of switches and knobs to turn on your radio".

Which is probably why most of the more successful flight sims have focused on WWI and WWII. LOT fewer knobs back then :p

Mech Combat in general, really. Consoles have it (from varying degrees of "realism". Gundam games for fighting game style mechs, Armored Core for a balance between Mechwarrior and Swordy McSworderton Mechs, and even that weird RAD game that was just all shades of awesome gimmicky goodness :p). Last real mech game we had (I don't count Front Mission Evolved, since that is really closer to Shogo than a proper Mech Game) is probably Mechwarrior 4 (If I missed one, PLEASE tell me :p). And I think the community was pretty divided on that one.

Like I said, both platforms have their advantages and their disadvantages. Their genres that they excel at, and their genres that they ignore.

NamelessFragger: Flight sim realism: Did those 486-era titles give you missile loadouts in the high double digits, by any chance? (I'll admit-it's been a long, long time since I last played MicroProse's F-15 Strike Eagle II.) That's one thing that stands out about Ace Combat: you have TONS of missiles. Also, it feels like all combat is WVR (within visual range), while most air combat nowadays is BVR (beyond visual range). Of course, not being able to see what one just blew up beforehand probably saps some of the thrill of it all. That's probably another appeal for WWI/WWII-era sims; some people might find even WVR guided missiles rather cheap compared to guns. (Though in that case, why there aren't more Korean War-era sims is beyond me. We certainly haven't had another MiG Alley show up in the last decade.)

As for mech sims, how'd you overlook Steel Battalion? No, not the upcoming, Kinect-based Heavy Armor that screams "in name only". The original Xbox title, in its massive, backlit-button-bristling controller glory that almost immediately consigned it to "cult classic" status at best. (Yes, I have one. It's bigger than the pictures suggest, but not nearly as heavy.) That controller, while something you'd only expect PC gamers to even think about paying for, certainly adds to the immersion, but the VTs (Vertical Tanks) actually feel like walking behemoths of destruction, especially in Line of Contact. They take a while to start up and get going, they're generally slow to turn (and will tip over if you push the balancer too hard, especially in LoC 5th-gear wheel mode), and you can practically feel every step they take. Outmaneuvering the enemy and his shots is half the game, really, moreso than in something like Battletech/MechWarrior where combat is more about hitting the enemy in the right spots to take out crucial subsystems. (Part of it is due to how HARD it is to hit enemy VTs in SB:LoC. Projectiles are slow and dodged easily with a slidestep, even though everyone has a built-in aimbot of sorts, and long reload times on main guns generally leave an opening for the enemy VT's batteries to recharge for another slidestep.)

I might seem kind of gushy, but it's just that I don't think I'll ever see another mech combat title like it. Not just that controller, but the feeling that you really are commanding a gun platform on legs due to how they move.
I'll give you the missile thing, although, even a lot of the hardcore flight sim players these days (and I mean "hardcore" as in IL-2 players who scare the hell out of me and beat me up all the time :p) tend to play with infinite ammo.

ANd yeah, I didn't mention Steel Battalion because I want that thing so badly that I die a little inside every time I realize I am not playing it right now.
I said earlier that I had never heard of Angry Joe, but I also had never heard of Geoff Keighley before either.
After reading a little more about him, I actually like him a little more. I didn't know that before this he was a long time gaming journalist who had stood up for Mass Effect on Fox News, and a decent amount of gamers have some respect for him. He doesn't hate pc games either, in an interview when asked what his favorite games were he said he grew up playing old Sierra and Lucas Arts games like Monkey Island, Space quest and King's quest.
Also I hadn't watched the second half of the video the first time I commented, but now that I have I actually like Angry Joe less. Seems a litte full of himself and Keighly made him look stupid in the press conference . Also why does Angry Joe agree that Final Fantasy MMO didn'tt come out this year and then smirk to the camera, instead of just telling Keighley it did come out this year?

I still think it was pretty cold that Keighley wasn't even looking at Angry Joe during the interview, but maybe Angry Joe was also kind of a douchebag himself setting up this whole interview

Yeah, I hate Angry Joe. I used to think that he was trying to be funny, but I realized he was actually pretty full of himself. I find it hilarious that he acts all high-and-mighty when he's on one of the most obscure comedy sites.
Angry Joe is ridiculous. His whole nonsense where he's ranting about "He treated me like I'm just some blogger!" YOU ARE JUST A FUCKING BLOGGER, YOU ENTITLED REJECT! Nobody with a functioning brain sees this guy as legitimate.

TheCheese33: Geoff isn't exactly a GameTrailers employee. He's kind of like a gun for hire; if GameFly, Spike, GameTrailers and GameSpot need someone to talk about games, they go to him.
It's like The Legion of Douches.

Holy shit, he's the Perez Hilton of the gaming world?

Burn him at the stake.

StingingVelvet: Gametrailers represents everything I hate about this industry right now. Shane on their podcast thing and Geoff on their other shit are such fratboys they epitomize the "OMG BROS MADDENS!" kind of gamer, and they run massive gaming media sites! Arg!
I couldn't have said it better myself

I still visit gametrailers for...well...trailers sometimes but apart from that Everything else on the site is terrible

I like it how they always focus extensively on consoles (especially the 360) while completely ignoring a lot of PC games and reviews for them and their "Reviews" are fucking terrible, just like IGN's or Gamespot ones

The invisible walls episodes are a waste of space and time, Patch attack is a joke and their "forums" are probably the worst ever place on the internet, filled with brainless morons from 4chan

Where would one go for GOOD reviews?

A source with similar values to you. I find the guys at RockPaperShotgun are usually good for that, at least, for me.

But you might want to go look at Gamespy. IGNORE their scores, but read their reviews. The few reviews of them I read over the past few years actually seem fair (if you ignore the scores). UT3 had nothing good to say about the game (still got a high score :p), which was a pretty big red flag.
Both guys are idiots. One thinks he's some voice of all PC gamers, the other is an asshole who thinks a "best of PC" category is all our platform deserves when there's the indie games, MMOs, etc.
never depend on corporate, fanboys or self claimed pros on the games for reviews, if you want the honest truth go the game forums and read what people who bought have to say on the game, for ex civilization 5 is great game based on scores etc but go to the official forums and steam forums and read what the people who bought the game have to say, you will be shocked, same story on f12010
Who is this angry joe? All he seemed to want to do is get an extended interview to tell Geoff 50 different ways why the VGA's suck so why the hell should Geoff have taken him seriously? The VGA's probably do suck but so does this Joe character imo.

No, Perez Hilton would be that guy, Irate Gamer.

I've seen Angry Joe's work before and it's okay. It's better than many, but it's still amateur (and he KNOWS he's amateur.) I'm not watching this video because I don't want to explode in rage, but Joe's a pretty competent reviewer most of the time.

How often are those people pleased? Every game forum I have visited has had a considerable amount of "whiners". I get the feeling certain number of people will always be raging about something. Even when the general consensus is that a game sucks there will be a similiar population who still like it

And in the end, no game is perfect so that's understandable. Plus most people won't bother giving feedback if they're satisfied
Stuff like the Video Game Awards are an even bigger joke than most mainstream review sites.
