So glad to see someone else realize this, Valve as an actual game developer sucks, even ID software who is labelled as a "Has Been" has more talent than them because at least RAGE was fun

Valve does not care about making games, they are swimming in the money they are making from steam and don't care about anything

I have no desire to play games in my living room and not sure why other people enjoy it. Call me a freak I guess. Competing for the TV and having everyone up in my business is blah. I love escaping from them and immersing myself with headphones in my own area.

Sure Valve can be in my living room, but i still want to have the option to use other platforms as well.

Valve engineer Ben Krasnow has confirmed the Steambox will be Linux based. Expected reveal will be GDC or E3 this year and launch 2013.

Guess they are planning to go with source stuff and whatever indies have Linux ports. Now might be a good time to consider putting a bid in for THQ on Monday.

After Steam Bigbox, or whatever it is called, I fail to see the point of this. Isn't it simpler too hook your TV into your home network and access you proper Steam via the controller.

I don't have a TV, but I've seen that setup. Can't be that difficult. And considering that even your run of the mill TV already has a gazillion ports and features, it seems like the simpler solution.

If this takes off, it'll end with all Steamworks games being controller-only.

I'll start console-ing when the new XBox and Playstations allow for keyboard and mice adapters. (simply what I'm used to)

"Steambox" will probably just be a nice line of gaming PCs I'm guessing. The distinction between console and PC is increasingly blurry, however.

For the same reason why Steamwork usage is free; to get rid of their competitors or at least to have an edge over them. IF it works not only most games will be using Steamwork and be tied to Steam, but also there will be a "controlled" hardware, controlled by Valve, with "probably" a custom controlled OS on which they can do nearly anything for which the game could be optimized. In the end Valve would control the DRM, the distribution method and the hardware/os...

If anything, IF it works (i.e. become popular) I don't see anything good coming out of it, not only it will increase Valve hegemony on "PC" gaming but there is also a risk of having PC games optimized/patched for this "steambox" without much care for the others PC configuration, not to mention the risk of having some games exclusive for Steambox and not working on a standard PC.

So, any non-conspiracy answer?

But I'm sure that Valve will get the majority share of PC gamers by using linux. That worked so well in the past.

The assimilated entities. Modders and indie developers mostly. For example Portal is the result of the entire dev team of Narbacular Drop, which features the same basic concept, being hired by Valve.

Using Linux just kills this. Not sure why they think that will work out.
