Torment: Tides of Numenera™ continues the thematic legacy of the critically acclaimed Planescape: Torment™. Set in Monte Cook's new tabletop role-playing world, Numenera™, the newest Torment asks: What does one life matter?

Numenera's Ninth World is a fantastic vision of a world in which massive civilizations have risen and fallen - disappeared, transcended, overwhelmed, or destroyed - and left their cities, monuments, and artifacts behind. As each rose and fell, their achievements became part of the accumulated detritus of eons... but much of it did not decay. And now this assortment of ancient power is there for the taking, ever-present, underfoot. The humans of the Ninth World take and use what they can. They call these wonders (and horrors) the numenera.

One of these humans discovers a way to use the numenera to grow strong, to cheat death, to skip across the face of centuries in a succession of bodies. But he discovers an unexpected side effect: You.

Torment™ is a game of complex and nuanced morality, deep and reactive choice and consequence, and immersion into a new and strange vision. You will chart a course through bizarre dimensions, across the face of a vastly different world. You will earn companions along the way, and discover their value - perhaps through their strengths, perhaps more literally by selling them. Throughout it all, you will choose a path that will lead inexorably to an ending that stems naturally from your actions, facing adversaries who harness powers beyond your comprehension, and who will ultimately force you to face yourself and answer the question: What does one life matter?

So I'm assuming that this is a sequel in the same Universe, just with a different MC and stuff, right?

Depends on how many worlds you consider "Same Universe". It is based on Monte Cook's world, which I'm currently reading on, thus bypassing the D&D ruleset.

On the other hand, the lovely thing about the Planescape setting was that it could have anything and everything in it, without breaking any rules. Doubt we'll see Lady of Pain in Numenera though :(

Oh dear lord, they're going into it with 'making a philosophical and artsy game' mindset. There has ever been only so few instances where this actually worked, and I don't believe the original Planescape was amongst them (amongst those that were made to be artsy that is, not amongst those which are amazing - as PST IS amazing.)
I'm very much looking forward to this game, more so than Project Eternity.

Oh yeah, the Lady of Pain, I remember having Torment and SS2 installed at the same time and noticing how incredibly similar the composition of the 2 start icons featuring SHODAN and The Lady of Pain were, both out in the same year too IIRC...

Hope the new Torment lives up to its name...

I am seriously looking forward to this; it sounds like what I wanted Project Eternity to be.

Of course, it hasn't actually been funded yet, and if it is,l who knows how well it will actually live up to its own hype? But I live in hope.
Hm, I'm looking forward to this and I'm curious to see where this might go.

Still, I'm a little skeptical about launching another Kickstarter while Wasteland 2 isn't even out yet. Not sure how the larger crowd of potential backers feels about this. After all, InXile sound like they'd like to start working on Torment very soon.

Well PST asked "what can change the nature of a man", so the new question is more than appropriate. As such PST is rather philisophical game in nature and more artsy than most games.

To me it sounds a bit too formulaic. PS:T revolved around a philosophical question, so this one will revolve around a philosophical question, too. In PS:T you were traveling across several dimensions, so in this one ... etc, etc. You get my meaning. In PS:T all of that was fresh and original, but IMO this one sounds too much like a sequel trying to cater to the old PS:T crowd by giving them more of the same. It might not be such a bad thing if that's what you're looking for but in the end I fear this game is doomed to play second fiddle to PS:T by design. I think I'd have preferred a completely new game without any reference to Torment in the title. But we'll see. It might still become an enjoyable RPG.
Looks good, when's the Kickstarter?
I wonder if this game will have a similar "death" mechanic to Torment.
The setting looks pretty fresh.
The perfect scene for a new Torment game.
I'm excited for this.
