Despite GOG’s prerelease testing process, it’s apparent that Moto Racer 2 has some serious gameplay issues due to the remains of copy protection left over from back in the day. This specific issue is caused by copy protection remaining in the game we've distributed; it's not caused by conflicts with specific hardware or software setups. This affects everyone's game, and that's a problem. This problem is present in the masters of the game from the publisher, and is present in all downloadable retail versions of the game. The problem is simple: in motocross races, players can’t shift into a gear that’s higher than 3rd gear, and in Superbike mode they can’t shift above 4th. This makes many tracks extraordinarily difficult to win.

Some retailers might be happy with saying, “Well, we’ll work on this and when it’s fixed we’ll give you a new download.” Then, after a month, six months, a year (or longer?) players would probably get an executable that functions correctly and the retailer would be happy with having done its job.

GOG is not just “some retailer”.

Yes, we’re working on fixing MotoRacer 2 at this very moment, but we can’t tell you for sure that we’re going to have this fixed in a week, two weeks, or even a month, and telling you to wait for that long isn’t fair.

So here’s what we’re going to do: if you’re unhappy with your copy of MotoRacer 2, we’ll give you a code for any $5.99 game at GOG.com. Just log in and go to our support form, select MotoRacer 2 from the dropdown of games you have downloaded, and fill out the subject line with something like, “I’d like a credit for my copy of MotoRacer 2”. Our handy-dandy support team will get cracking on it and will send a code to you as soon a we can.

Since we’re not happy with the quality of the title, we’re have taken it off the list of active sales for now while we work on it. If you ask for a credit for your copy of the game, you’ll notice that we don’t take it off your shelf, though, and if you have already purchased it and want to download it, you’ll still be able to. Once we get the game working--whenever that is--we’ll put the game up for active sale again and post an announcement so that you guys know to redownload the new version of the game.

In the meantime, you’ll be able to enjoy a complimentary game on us as an apology.

GOG will never knowingly disappoint you, and we hope that this makes it right for you guys. We wouldn’t be where we are without our dedicated community of gamers, and we hope you’ll hang around for a long time to come.
other game etailers should learn from GOG
What a great gesture. GOG is definately tops in my book and I feel better about spending my money here knowing you care so much about your customers and their experience. You not only bring us the best games from the past DRM free, but you also bring us top notch customer service.

Curunauth: There are a LOT of companies that could learn quite a bit from GOG's example here.

I always say that the best test of a company is not when everything works smoothly, but how they deal with things going wrong . . . and this is exactly the right response.

:-)

I <3 GOG!!
That is the best test of PEOPLE, period. That's often the only way to find out who they really are.

Classy move, GOG. As if I needed another reason to recommend GOG ... but this is just more great ammunition to use in spreading the good word about this company and what it's up to.
Great job GOG.
What about Interstate '76? That game still does not work on the majority of computers and has gameplay afflicting bugs.

xyem: I'm going to add my voice the approval of this generous and outstanding reaction to discovering the problem and also be one of those who is going to say "Many thanks for the offer, but I'm fine" :)

avatar
thealtkey: I see that some people are respectfully declining the free game offer. That's an admirable stance to take, but hey, they made the offer and you deserve it!
avatar
xyem: How come you regard those that brought it as deserving of a free game?
.
.

k, people, because the game you bought is broken! gog makes no big loose, they "exchange" the game and therefore have still sold "a" game. they will get refunds from the publisher as well. over that they show us how nice they are = good marketing - not to mention people were unhappy with the game sold in that state = bad marketing.

and why you "should" take the exchange: if not you let gog look stupid against the publisher : P (who would answer: people are happy, they wont even a free game in exchange) *g*

;)

Well, it's not that people deserve a free game exactly, but they do deserve a working product since they paid for one. It's GOG who thinks the people deserve a free game. ;-)

While I am happy Moto Racer 2 owners get compensated, where was this apology when you released Interstate 76, a game that was also unplayable? Many of us who bought it DID make our voices heard and GOG ignored each and every one of us.

This line really gets me:

"GOG will never knowingly disappoint you, and we hope that this makes it right for you guys"

Except you have done NOTHING to make it right for Interstate 76 fans, a game that requires outside applications and tricks to get it to be *almost* playable. The only solution I've seen is to download third party software and launchers and I shouldn't need to do that with any GOG game. Even then, those third party techniques don't work for everyone.

So please, I'd love for a staff member to comment on Interstate 76 or Gorky... yet I doubt we'll see anything, as Interstate 76 was quickly swept under the rug at the time of launch.

I don't even want compensation, I want you to just fix the problems with the game so it's playable, please.

i think it is off topic to debate interstate 76 here, and that it is not fair to poison the customer care for motor racer 2 with this.

however a short word from my side: i dont own I76, i belive you if you say people are having problems with the game, but i see also 541 votes on that game with an average 4 1/2 stars.
now you must understand that such an exchange like with motor racer can only be done if the game is really broken, if not the publisher wont refund and it would be a huge financel loose for gog.
and then, if 500 users gave the game 5 stars, are you sure it is not your pc causing the problems with interstate 76? does it maybe depend on the machine..?
and last but not least, nothing is perfect in this world, we must accept this once in a while without complaining. try to see the bigger cause in gog, and close one eye on smaller bugs - these are guys like us! im sure they do their best to, this business is there (financel) life!

It's not that I'm happy with having a broken game, but I am happy to wait for GOG to attempt to fix the problem. When they announce they can't fix it, I'll take the refund/exchange then.

I think it shows to the publishers that treating paying customers with respect is well worth the effort.

Yeah, this is why I am willing to wait until it's evident they can't fix it. GOG has behaved generously, I shall behave exactly the same way back :)
I didn't buy the game for I admit it is not my style.

But happy to see this kind of customer service, which is among the best outside of some miscommunication (damn monk =p)
I just want to say this:

You guys and girls over at GOG are awesome.

Such treatment of customers is non existent in today's world.

Thank you.
Stay classy, GOG.com
I'm really grateful with how you guys decided to address this issue. I bought MR a month ago and was very frustrated when I noticed the bug. now I think I'll get the Zork Anthology with my code.
Classy.

I didn't bought Moto Racer 2 but still I really appreciate this from companies, and it's great that GOG maintains itself in this select group of trustable stores. Keep on. ;)
