Game ch-ch-ch-changer!

GOG.com is pleased as punch to announce that The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings Enhanced Edition, developed by sister company CD Projekt RED, will be coming to PC on the 17th of April! Just like when CDP RED updated the original Witcher to The Witcher: Enhanced Edition, this comes with scads of upgrades and extras for you to enjoy. The good news is that anyone who owns The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings before the 17th will receive the upgrade to the Enhanced Edition for free!

Note: This upgrade is available to everyone who has bought The Witcher 2, not just folks who bought it from GOG.com. The upgrade will be free from now until the heat death of the universe, available through the in-game launcher.

In celebration, we’re offering The Witcher 2 on sale for 15% off, starting now, for the next two weeks.

In case you didn’t hear the news from CDP RED, let’s go over what’s new and awesome about the Enhanced Edition:

New major adventures set in new locations. These consist of an underground system of chambers beneath Loc Muine and a temperate coniferous forest in the Loc Muine mountains, and a secret cave passage. These new adventures will add several hours of story-based gameplay to the game.

New major characters to the Witcher story. One of them is Brigida Papebrock Dame. This noble woman comes from the Temerian family Papebrock and is a 30 year old lady-in-waiting of the Temerian court. The other characters are secret--for now!

All new animations and cut scenes, including a new, three and a half minute pre-rendered cinematic depicting the assassination of King Demavend of Aedirn. BAFTA Award winner and Academy Award nominee Tomasz Baginski brings this key historical event to life, setting the stage for the story told in The Witcher 2.

GOG.com will also be adding the Witcher comic book to our list of goodies on the 17th as a free gift to everyone who owns the Witcher 2; further, there will be a new game map, game guide, manual, and soundtrack available in your free goodies on that day as well.

The Witcher 2 is already a game that has won--in scientific notation--a gazillion awards. Come this April 17th, it’s going to get even better!

manje92: If this was a 40% off sale like the one Christmas,
I would've bought Witcher 2 for sure.
But, buying now don't look like a great deal.
I'll just wait until Witcher 3 comes out and the price for Witcher2 gets lower.
$34 for AAA title with continuous support and update from developer + tons of extra content + multiple FREE dlc + from vanilla version upgraded to version 2.0, and soon to be Enhanced for FREE.. also with no DRM.
That's a steal for me. I bought it for $50 during the release day, and i have no regret whatsover.

This is great, but why not just upgrade everyone to the EE?
I'm speculating that some people won't be, since there's a time limit.

They'll probably reduce the price of the base game and sell EE as an expansion after the certain date. I remember them saying that some content would be free and some would be payed.

Maybe you're right. This is not just normal enhanced edition like the first Witcher. The game soon will introduce new location, character, story / chapter etc. It's more like an expansion pack.

I don't like it. I don't mind paying extra for additional content, but I don't think that people should pay extra for revamped content. I know that this includes some new stuff, but if the gameplay overhaul is anything like it was from TW to TW:EE, then it should be free.

Obvious kudos to CDP:R for still working on this game, but I'd rather see a free patch + a paid expansions with serious new content.

Saying for free before the 17th doesn't necessarily mean the EE will be released separately for new users. It could just as well mean they're simply replacing the old version with the new version on their store page after the 17th. By saying it's free for existing users, they avoid having people wait for the new version since they'll get it anyway. Of course that's just speculation on my part too.

Time for Enigmatic T to clarify on what happens after the 17th.

You are right, that's an option too. CDPR did state that they planned to charge extra for expansions but that DLC would be free so my prediction could happen too. I guess we'll have to wait for a better explanation on the matter.

It seems so.

The wording made me think they'll probably retire the original edition after the 17th -- So no need to upgrade people who buy it later since they'll only be allowed to get the EE, much like what happened with the witcher.

I could be wrong though.

What about people who buy retail?

I'll edit the main post to reflect this as well, but in answer to your questions:

1. CDP RED is like the Oprah of Enhanced Editions. You get an Enhanced Edition, he gets an Enhanced Edition. Everybody gets Enhanced Editions!

2. Retail or digital, it will be a free upgrade for everyone, just like The Witcher.

3. After the 17th of April, no one will be selling The Witcher 2 v 2.0; all shops upgrade to the Enhanced Edition. Anyone who buys after that point, they will get the upgrade for free, in that it is included "in the box" with the purchase of the game.

4. If you already have The Witcher 2 version 2.0, you will be able to upgrade to the Enhanced Edition at any time after the 17th, as long as CDP RED is still around to serve the patches to you.

I think that answers everything?
How many hours of gameplay will be added?

That answers everything! Thanks a bunch :)

Perhaps you should also put this in the main post because currently it's a little bit ambiguous, hence I voiced my concerns!
Will we get Dark Edition for PC? I'd love to buy it.
