We're happy to announce GOG's version of highly-anticipated RPG will not contain DRM as all other downloadable versions will.

With the exception from the "good, old games" rule by offering The Witcher 2, we wanted to transfer all the GOG values to a new AAA title. Thanks to a close cooperation with our sister company CD Projekt RED, the developer of The Witcher franchise, we've managed to get the best deal for the digital edition of the game. With today's announcement of GOG's version being the only one fully DRM-free in digital download, the deal gets even more unrivaled! We stated from the very beginning, DRM isn't an efficient way to combat piracy and we mean it.

But wait, there's even more cool stuff about The Witcher 2 on GOG. For all users who preorder the game on GOG, we'll host a live video Q&A on Ustream with Senior Producer of The Witcher 2, Tomasz Gop. The Q&A will take place on Friday, March 18th, at 17:00 GMT and during the Q&A, Tomasz will be revealing some exclusive “Making of the new Geralt” concept art and discussing the changes in the fighting mechanic from the original game.

How do you get access to the Q&A? That's easy, everyone who preorders The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings on GOG.com by noon GMT on Thursday the 17th will receive a link and a password that will allow them to take part in the session and ask questions about The Witcher 2 and GOG.com. Everyone whose questions get answered will receive one coupon for a free GOG game.
My concern as someone has already pointed out is for those who bought the physical version: having pre-ordered the collector's edition (which is great, but also cost 100 euros instead of 45) i think i've shown my support to developers, and i wish to know if the "DRM-free only on gog" refers both to the physical and the digital version or only on the digital one...

damn , I really want a physical copy, but NO DRM!!! That is _very_ tempting!
The last game I bought at release price was Starcraft 2 and before that, I hadn't bought a first-day-of-release game in years. I'm doing it again for the Witcher 2, without even having played the first game (which I'm hoping pops up on GOG sometime). Hell, I'll even leave Witcher 2 on my shelf until I get to play the first and the only reason I'm pre-ordering it is because i want the no DRM stance to succeed. I'm hoping the lot of us who are pre-ordering on GOG offset the amount of pirates who'll get the game within the hour. If his works out, It'll really send a message.

I think having other sites selling it with DRM and GOG without will work as a way of knowing for sure if their stance works out or not. These news don't read like they're good, though. The game was supposed to come out DRM free for everyone in every store and now it's not.

reaver894: Ditto, havent pre-ordered yet but i will, im also really worried that a DRM free AAAgame will be on torrent sites within an hour of release, what more could a thieving pirate ask for.
It will be, but that happens with AAA games whether or not they have DRM. I think that's everyone's point really.

Kunovski: there's absolutely no way I would buy the game elsewhere... (well, I might get a physical copy much later :o)

I'm just wondering if GOG has such a huge users base to make such difference... are there any approximate numbers of active (buying) GOG users yet?

within an hour of release?

We live in a time where games, no matter how well protected they are usually appear on torrent sites a week before the "official" release and they are in stores
I'd still rather buy this from GamersGate. And will do in an eventual sale.
Pre-ordered a LONG time ago :)

I'm still hoping for the original to show up here though, even if it is for the same price as it is currently being listed on Steam. I like my DRM free games!

deoren: I figured out of all of them (not including GOG.com of course), Direct2Drive would actually be "truly" DRM-Free with it's no client download approach.
Direct2Drive aren't DRM free - the downloads you buy from them require online activation (with all that entails) and apparently many of the game exe files are encrypted, breaking compatibility with third party mods.

StingingVelvet: I collect boxes so at this point this is kind of annoying. I'm paying $130 for the collector's edition and you guys act like I'm not supporting you the right way or something. I would also hope that version will be DRM free.
You may want to ask CD-Projekt to offer a DRM-free addon then...
I was going to pre-order The Witcher 2 boxed version yesterday but I could find absolutely no information on the DRM it was using. I'm not after the specific program, only what it's going to require from me and the only statement I could find was that it would be 'nothing to worry about' and that it wouldn't be steampowered.

Specifically I'm worried about a disk check, so few games I buy these days have them (I think the last was Oblivion) that this small form factor system doesn't have a DVD drive and while I can borrow one to install The Witcher 2 it'll be rather a pain if it requires a disk in a drive every time it's started.

For a company calling itself progressive about DRM this is very disappointing, even Ubisoft releases what their DRM will require ahead of release.
The Witcher 2: AoK for around 30 euro, and a physical copy.

or

The Witcher 2: AoK for around 45 euro, and a digital copy, that I'll get with the physical anyway.

Its a really though decision.

Enjoy: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Witcher-Premium-PC-DVD/dp/B004CJ8YTO/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1300115693&sr=8-1

PS. I hope GOG's TW2 release will not be a combination of GOG's installers + TW's technical side.

The Witcher was a pain in the ass for ripping. --- Thanks to which I managed to get the game from 12gb to 5.5gb.

No-one informed Direct2drive of this decision, obviously.

Also, still waiting for confirmation of the DRM for the retail release. For a company that makes a big deal about DRM, you're suspiciously quiet on that front.

Exactly.

They really need to get this sorted out. Especially since some people have pre-ordered the game on other digital distribution sites which also stated that the game would come without DRM.

This update would be great news as an internal memo, but as far as public news announcements go, it is actually pretty negative for the buyers as a whole.

Just don't tell /v/ about this.
They are one of the biggest pirate bases.

Fuckin' anarchists...

Sorry but this is not true.
I just asked the CDP Red guys; every other downloadable edition of The Witcher 2 will have DRM. I can't speak for boxed copies, but it's confirmed for the downloadable Digital Premium Edition.
