JudasIscariot: "So are you telling me that if this file gets updated on 2 October, its version will jump from "gog-08" to "gog-02"?"

Yes, that is exactly what will happen.
edit: ah, ninjad by Judas.

Adding the whole date is good. Only adding the day would be completely insane, but this is GOG after all, so I though that was what was going to happen ;-P

The whole date is in the file name, see my earlier post re: Necropolis :)

muntdefems: OK, thanks!

Really? Who thought this would be a good idea and would not cause any confusion at all? Please reconsider it, and if you want to base the gog-versions on the date the files were created, then add the whole date to the gog-version and not only the month day. :\
avatar
JudasIscariot: The whole date is added to the file name though so I am not really seeing what the problem is at this point?
Because our libraries don't list filenames, nor do the download links. You only get to see the actual filename after you've clicked the corresponding link and the download has started.

Do you really see no problem with gog-versions going up and down like a yo-yo? As long as you'll keep showing the "game" version in our libraries, I think it'd be better to leave it at that and not add a confusing gog-version after it.

ugh...

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/3/3b/Paris_Tuileries_Garden_Facepalm_statue.jpg

GOG could perhaps learn a thing or two about versioning and build release versioning by studying rpmvercomp from an RPM based Linux distribution and paying attention to how the "Version" and "Release" fields are treated, or some other distribution and their own packager and similar scheme.

So much this. The way game libraries display installers, this new versioning method is going to cause a lot of confusion, make people waste (more) bandwidth, and get people frustrated.

It also would have been appreciated if we were told why the versions jump up and down when we first noticed it; not a good show leaving us wonder and speculate.

Added the Democracy 3 changelog to the game forum.

Yep, it's probably one of those things that will make people go apeshit ballistic wasting bandwidth, forum riots etc.
