Eschalon: Book Ι now FREE & seminal RPGs up to 80% off!

In many ways, the arrival of Torment: Tides of Numenera feels like the culmination of the isometric RPGs resurgence which started in recent years. With their impressive comeback still in full force, what better time to remind ourselves of their brilliance than an awesome RPG Sale?

Kicking things off with a bang, Eschalon: Book I is now totally FREE! GOG.com has a 24h head-start on this giveaway so fans of hardcore RPGs can already go ahead and treat themselves to this hidden gem. The other two entries in the series, Eschalon: Book II and III, also received a permanent price drop - on top of that, they are 60% off for the duration of this sale.

This is also the perfect opportunity to discover or perhaps revisit several paragons of the isometric-RPG genre, like Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition and its recent expansion Siege of Dragonspear, the revitalized Shadowrun series, and Wasteland 2 Director's Cut, among others.

Celebrate your love for RPGs with a free copy of Eschalon: Book I and a grand Sale featuring a selection of celebrated games, going for up to -80%.

The RPG Sale will last until March 5, 8AM UTC.
Thx for the gift, GOG. It's likely I'll bite some more from the promo a bit later

Catshade: I don't quite understand the '24 h head-start'. Is it free forever from now on or only free for the next 24 hour?
After the 24-hour mark, it will also become free elsewhere and will remain free from that point onwards. For now, though, it is available for free only on GOG.com, hence the "head-start" ;)
Nice promo, only 2 titles which I don't have yet
Btw, is Eschalon Book3 still bad? I skipped the series because of the reviews of the conclusion.
(well, also because I have various similar-looking games from Spiderweb)

i placed this in the wrong thread i was told it should be palced here:

Nice to see eschalon book 1 is free, i own all 3.
Will there be more games offered for free during special rpg promotions of new rpg or other games?

Will all gog games become eventually free during new promotion(s)............... :D ?
And how many old non DOS games (windows games) will run 100% problem free on win 10? cause sooner or later there is no escaping win10, old windows wont recognise modern hardware so we are stuck and forced to be all using the awful win 10 in a few years.

Vythonaut: Cheers for the gift GOG! :)
Also, Shadowrun games (all three of them) are highly recommended to all cRPG fans; hope we'll see more entries to the series soon!

There *is* the option of running Linux (either on bare hardware or a VM) and using WINE; it might sometimes support older games that don't run on modern Linux. I got Exile: Escape from the Pit (the game that Avernum 1 is a remake of) running this way.

On an unrelated note (and unrelated to my previous post), I prefer the top-down view (used in games like Ultima 1-5 and Dragon Quest 1-6) to the isometric views that seem to have become common.
Oh, yet another free game, thanks. A bit too many rpgs in the backlog to pick up anything else now, sorry about that.

Smannesman: Nothing for me here.
same here i own all good old games like baldurs already and the new releases are not my cup of tea, and it seems there will be coming shiploads of new games all like this, so how is the old games situation? will there be a few every 3 months , or dozens a month like in 2014 ?

The old stuff are the games i can play, all the good old classic verions like fallout jagged alliance baldurs and many more, all the new versions cant compare imo to the originals.

last games i bought : The Dagger of Amon Ra , Freddy Pharkas, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.

Not all new games are bad ( just most of them are bad ) this game looked interesting so i tried it and got the 1st chapter on steam, yup chapters at 9.99 which makes it quite expensive 3x9.99 = 30 euros, chap 1 = 3 to 5 hours playtime so the game could be quite long.

it uses visionaire which means the vsync might have to be set to off in some cases and the need of Visual Studio 2012 - 32 Bit Runtime. I tried it and it seems to work, so far the game looks okay.

Games like these might fit nice at GoG or maybe not .
Nelly Cootalot isnt here , and this game might look similar for people to Nelly Cootalot game.
Anyway just check the game and see what it looks like, the first chapter has a walkthrough on youtube.

I know these games, looked like old c64 games , never played them but i am familiar with them, i prefer KQ 5 and 6 classic, there seems to be a 3d version on steam, ugly in my opinion, but i am a fan of classic games, not ancient like the c64 graphics, but more like the amiga versions, but certainly no 3d or fpp.

dtgreene: It's a shame that they choose the one game in the Eschalon series that *doesn't* let you play as a female character to make free. What's even worse is that there is a gender spot on the character creation screen that it looks like you should be able to change, but when you try to do so you get some BS about the story needing the main character to be male.
It'd be odd to make another game from a series free and leave the first one paid, wouldn't you say?
As for the complaint, I'm thinking that showing that they were aware that some would really desire that choice and taking a moment to add an explanation why it's not present is quite a step above not including anything about it at all... And if you say this is the only game in the series without this choice, it means they fixed things in the other ones, right?
Thanks for the freebie, Basilisk Games and GOG! \o/ :)

Maxvorstadt: Well, the Shadowrun games are rather meh. Nice story, nice combat and interesting Skill system, but they lack everything else a godd RPG needs. No loot and they have very bad healing mechanics. But the story is nice, at least in the 2nd and 3rd game.
Shadowrun is not supposed to be a game of endless looting; you're supposed to be a professional hired to do a job and in many cases time is crucial because you can end up dead easily.

Things to think about:

* Armors: If the dead dude wore an armor, it's long past it's usable condition after the battle so i see no reason to loot something that's on top of everything cumbersome to drag around.
* Weapons: As a professional you should have all the equipment/armament you'll need for the mission. No reason to loot for other weapons since there is always the possibility these weapons to be locked from unauthorized use (hardcoded to the user & equipped with RFID chips to make them easily trackable. Also, good lucking getting rid of them and making a profit, if you manage to stay alive and untracked -- generally not worth the hassle unless a particular weapon is of high value).
* Cyberware: Just forget it, you can't just loot it from a corpse because they have been surgically implanted. Even if you could, why would you want to spend time to get them out, jeopardizing the whole mission and putting the team in danger?
* Mission pay: When a mission pays thousands of nuyen, is it worth it to put everyone in danger just to loot some weapons? And how many can you possibly carry to justify the danger?

If there is something you can loot in Shadowrun's missions and make a good profit, that is data. Just get it and sell it to the highest bidder. It's all about data & professional work.

So, having said all that, while i do love loot in most games (yes, i've been sorting my loot in my house in Oblivion because looting is awesome thank you very much!), i can't really say that it's a fit-for-all mechanic for every game out there and in my opinion, Shadowrun proves that in the best possible way.

Cheers!
So, wait, the sale claims I have Wasteland 2 Director's Cut Digital Deluxe Edition, and Wasteland 2 Director's Cut Digital Deluxe Edition Upgrade, but NOT Wasteland 2 Director's Cut Digital Classic Edition? I assumed Deluxe was Classic plus Deluxe Upgrade?

First of all, Ultima 4 is free, but its predecessors aren't.

Second, I actually think that having what appears to be an option to set the character's sex and then saying "nope" if you actually choose it is worse than not having the option visible at all.

(Yes, they did fix the issue in the other games (though, of course, the ugliness of the growth system is still present).)

If the developers can't implement multiple genders into a game, they should take the approach taken by Final Fantasy (original) and Undertale: Make the playable characters not have an obvious gender.

That's a issue GOG always have and never fixed. They cannot discern what version of the game you have, upgrades doesn't count as the high tier version of the game, and high tier versione doesn't count also as the basic version.

Also if you were a backer of Wasteland 2 you probably received a "backer edtion" that doesn't count as a standard edition and doesn't receive updates notification.
