It's not hard to imagine a new publisher not being comfortable with GOG's distribution framework, and deciding to revoke sales. New faces, different ideas.
The reason behind still patching the GOG versions might be just simply be for PR reasons.

I'm not saying I like it though.

chandra: We'd like to give you a heads-up that on November 7th, 2pm UTC, The Long Dark will be removed from our catalog.

If you were not sure whether you wish to have this exploration-survival game or not, now is a good time to decide :)

Those who already own the games, or will purchase them before this Wednesday, will of course still be able to access them through their library. All owners will also have access to updates even after the game’s removal.
This is one of the decisions I never understand. Why the publisher decides to withdraw a game from distribution on GOG? I know a lot of developers and publishers fear the lack of DRM, so they decide not to sell their games here at all. But The Long Dark was available via GOG for some time. Probably the DRM free version is already floating on torrents, so why the decision to give up profits by cancelling the distribution here? Especially considering the fact that they decided to support this version with the upcoming updates.

kohlrak: it more or less just seems like they'd rather not get so many posts on their forums about the GOG version not getting updated as fast as steam.
Pulling the game from GOG won't help with that, as those who have already bought it will still be asking for updates, and possibly start asking for refunds too, if they fear that GOG version will be "abandoned".

Themken: I guess I will never have this one then as I have no trust that a company leaving GOG as a market intends to lift more than a single finger a single time, tops, for anything left behind. Still, a pity to see a promising looking game leaving.
Same. It is hard enough to get devs to update their games on a regular basis (which they are theoretically legally required to do) here IF they still get money for sold copys. Hard to believe they will do additional work without getting additional money. No, I would even call this naive.

I would have bought the game if the discount from the last sale has continued (yesterday the game was half of the price!). I don't understand why they did not extend the discount for people who do wish to buy the game, as no one knew that the game would be removed. People who have waited for later sales for this game are punished.

Right, but they won't get new people asking for updates.
Sorry to see another game go, a farewell sale would've been nice, alas it's too expensive to justify it. So I have to skip it as it is. Maybe at some point (when it needs no more updates) it will return cheaper.
damn, thats a shame. a good game too.
Already own it but I was going to buy a gift copy as it is leaving. Not at £24 I'm not.
Have this wishlisted, but can't buy it atm... well, I hope it'll be back one day.
I usually try to pick up the games that we get warned are being removed if they look at least mildly interesting. This fits the bill, but the price is too rich for my blood for just mild interest.
Thank god we still have No Man's Sky , Hello Neighbor and We Happy Few in the catalog .

And so many more, like sunless seas, gravedigger, etc. Do not worry, these will surely be leaving soon, as well.

I tried to be sarcastic but not in a good mood today .
Maybe GOG decided to initiate this one? It looks like another "episodic" game not yet finished. Has GOG decided to get out of the habit of releasing episode games until they're fully done?
