You were the one to ask why people would want to hoard toilet paper, I only tried to point out that if you stop to think about how would you go by without it, you might quickly realize that keeping one or more large value packs in reserve wouldn't be such an outlandish idea at all as at worst you just don't need to buy new toilet paper for a few more months.

fortune_p_dawg: more than anything, i've been wondering what the undocumented infection rate might look like (in any given country) as most people don't go to the doctor/hospital when they're sick, they just muscle it out.
avatar
firstpastthepost: Yeah I've wondered the same thing. Especially given the fact that for most people the symptoms don't present as much more than a bad flu.
avatar
DadJoke007: That is the question, and also, how does that affect death ratio in relation to the number of people who contract the disease? Tons of hidden variables we know nothing about that might change the perception of Covid-19 completely.
As I said in the OP, it is far too early to speculate about mortality rate or similar statistical data: I agree that there are hidden variables which prevent from make a correct evaluation of these aspects.
But let's stick to the facts: there is a totally unexpected number of people in need of intensive care treatments because of respiratory problems. This number is very greater than what is usually expected for this period of the year and it is quickly increasing at a very high rate. This anomaly was initially present in a small region, but has then spread into other, larger regions.
The logical conclusion is that there is a disease which causes severe respiratory problems in a not negligible percentage of the totality of infected people; this disease is very contagious and, while it is currently confined in a zone, it is quickly spreading out.

Rather than being an alarmist, like you originally said you didn't want to be, why not base things on available facts that make sense to base on available facts?

The idea that there are likely more infections than reported in some places is just common sense. Extrapolating that to say it means we can't judge the mortality rate is nonsense since we can take a statistical average of the mortality rate from places that have been doing extensive testing. You don't need the total number of deaths that have happened to find a statistical average for mortality rate, just a sample.

Here's a link to the recent data on this from the WHO: https://www.who.int/docs/default-source/coronaviruse/situation-reports/20200306-sitrep-46-covid-19.pdf?sfvrsn=96b04adf_2

Given the WHO data it suggests that COVID19 has a higher transmission rate than the typical flu but that it's hard to judge how much more it is. Likewise, it shows that it has a higher mortality rate, but they don't exactly how much more yet cause they want to collect more data.

babark: I find the misinformation being spread as dangerous as the virus itself: Well meaning(?) people sharing facebook posts with idiotic and harmful advice. Which is why I feel even posts in this thread could be detrimental (unless explicitly referencing serious news organisations, or health organisations).

Also, I'm curious with the toilet paper craze now...what are people stockpiling toilet paper for? What are they doing with it that they weren't doing before? Why do they need more? It's so weird!
Toilet paper is a personal hygiene issue.

It is also something that people use multiple times daily and...

... often do not think about.

If quarantined -- and without toilet paper -- you cannot keep yourself clean.

If you cannot keep yourself clean, you invite disease (more disease).

In any catastrophic, grid-down, or quarantine situation, personal hygiene and keeping clean is as important as access to clean water.

That is why toilet paper goes first.

GameRager: I dunno, but I DO hope you two keep it brief and we get back on track lest the nice kind staff give us the gift of "going offtopic locking". ;)
==============================

More ontopic:

In my own country a man went to an event(dunno what kind) even while he knew he was very likely to be infected....now they have to track ALL attendees of said event and check them as well....some people have no common sense, lemme tell ya.
I refrained from discussing this earlier, but since you brought up an important point...

This is IMPORTANT.

A semi-rural senior living facility in Washington state has had multiple COVID 19 cases and deaths.

As with deaths, the Fire Dept was called each time. In the US the Fire Dept comes prior to the Coroner.

In all 26 Fire Fighters came to the various scenes.

Those 26 Fire Fighters are now on 2 week quarantine.

26 Fire Fighters is almost that ENTIRE community's Fire Dept.

Now, should there be a fire in the next 2 weeks, where is the community going to get fire protection?

Now think about this should the virus spread to larger, more urban areas.

I hope this is enough to illustrate that this situation -- virus cases aside -- is going to tax the limits of the system.

While it's great to hope that their will be an emergency system should you need them, if you expect it in this situation, you might be out of luck.

I am not being hyperbolic.

In this modern world, many of you probably have not been in a situation of self-reliance. And while we have yet to see the extent of this pandemic on daily life, the signs are clear that this is the time to try and be as self-reliant as possible for the near future.

They are scared shitless?

TentacleMayor: Not at all a fan of governments mandating where citizens can go and then enforcing it with weapons, especially with no advance notice. People can self-isolate if they're concerned.
avatar
paladin181: Sometimes, people need someone to tell them what to do. Sometimes for the benefit of the majority, some people must be restrained. This is not martial law ,yet. But it is a situation where it could easily be warranted.
Again, from an Emergency Management family...

... desperate masses / mobs do not aid anyone's freedom.

The purpose of government at this time while planning strategies of combating the virus is to try to control fear and contain any resulting eruptions of chaos (which will grow with increased reported deaths)... keep those small and contained. Otherwise -- ironically -- chaos can spread like a virus.

This disease is not the end of the world
...

...but it will be a BIG change to our societies for an indeterminate amount of time. We all hope this will be a short-term issues, but instead of worrying about what the government might do in impeding freedoms, I would suggest...

... gather as much information as you can on the virus so you can minimize your and your family's exposure...

... know your community resources (esp. hospital locations) ...

... prepare in case of quarantine situations.

... listen to official sources on government mobilization and management

Should your community be quarantined or become chaotic, you should stay inside and be prepared to ride things out.

hahaha I din't think of it.

But the answer is no, since vampires have very good immune system.

That's unfair, what incentive would governments have to appear more efficient and capable than they really are? It's not like they have to win a popularity contest or something.

Btw, there will be more viruses such as this, as the ice is melting and the old viruses defreeze and become "available" and active.

but that's nothing compared to the amount of "crap" we're being bombarded daily from space.

there was an actual experiment, and the numbers are absolutely insane. but more tests are needed.
