MaGo72: And there I was, thinking, you can do your fitness training before getting a embers of rage code and then you get back and the sale is over :). That was like 5 hour Blitz-Sale oO.
More like 72 hours sale, but no notification unfortunately :(

GOG.com: at 6PM UTC.

Yeah. It seems like GOG prides itself on giving zero notice of this sort of thing now.

i can assure you my very own staff of personal assistants were collectively penalized for game misconduct and gross game negligence the moment it came to light none of these were on the wishlist
The base game itself is actually free, if you want to first see whether you like how it plays. The GOG versions counts as the backer edition, which gets you an extra class, extra modes and some cosmetic options as a thank you. The expansions cannot be gotten for free and add more content on top of that. If you like it, I'd say get both expansions - the more content the better as the way the game works means that the more content, the more insane the combinations you can make and encounter, get. The second campaign is also shorter and easier, for if you want a more easygoing playthrough.

The game itself you can play just fine without paying any attention to the lore if you just want to get going (I've never read any of it and have zero clue of what's going on, but fighting everything with weird classes is more than fun enough), plus there are also tons of mods that add even more content. They're all DRM-free (http://te4.org/addons/tome), but the only mod I'd say is a must-have even as a beginner is the Z0mnibus pack, because it has a lot of quality of life additions, like having the option to evade the patrols. The game is very customisable, so if you find yourself annoyed by a certain feature then you can almost always find a add-on that changes it for you.

Some tips on general play:
-You can right-click on any unit and inspect it to see its stats and abilities.
-Do the arena quest once you're at a high enough level.
-Don't fight patrols when possible. You never know what skills they might have, so best not to risk it.
-Get an ability that helps you escape. You can almost always see a death coming, so being able to get away will make you die way less.
-Bog standard humans and elves are really good starting picks.

Zoltan999: Yikes!! LOL...wtf is that? Is damage spikes like an aura the magic users have? And does this always happen?
He doesn't mean a specific ability, but that magic users are squishy murder machines - especially in a group. One of the reasons the second campaign is easier is that it has considerably fewer mage bosses. :D You can absolutely do the same thing, though, and you're not limited to spellcasters to pull it off with - there's tons of loot, classes, races and abilities to tinker with so you´ll frequently stumble across beastly combinations just by trying things out. It all depends on how you want to play.

OraEtLabora: Thank you. Yeah, I had these feeling, after reading the comments/review on the game page on also watched some videos on YT

Anyway, the discount is over.
I´m not sure if I´d say it´s hard - there are way , way harder roguelikes out there - but it is quite high damage. Enemies can kill you really quickly if you get mobbed or stumble upon something that is beyond what you´re equipped to deal with, but the same goes for the player. I wouldn´t say it´s easy either, though, but I was able to beat it myself, despite being really reckless and not very good at it, so it can´t be too hardcore either. ;)

These are all good tips. Especially about fighting patrols (most of my high level characters die because I think I can handle a patrol) and having an ability that helps you escape. Get a shield or a teleport, invest in something helps you escape fights. And don't be afraid to use it. Resting and healing is free (if you can get to safety) and a lot of monsters (though not all) won't particularly give chase if you can get out of their line of sight.

And, depending on which parts of the game you already own, it never has been a 75% discount. ;)

When you would have fixed the mess with your discounts I even would have bought an expansion. But instead of fixing it you announce the end of this unannounced sale with such a short time frame that I only can read the announcement after the sale already has ended. Great!

This game is massive with content. Extra content like mods and classes are on the website, too. I think it's worth the regular price. If you like stats then, THIS is the game to get. I was surprised how I got addicted to the game. I'll be playing it for this large update.

Too bad many have missed this sale. Perhaps, GOG will fix the issues and have it on sale once more.

Starmaker: ToME's primary defining feature is that it doesn't have a death spiral. No. Death. Spiral. Whatsoever.
avatar
JudasIscariot: Well, it may not have a "death spiral" (not sure what you mean in this particular context :P)
A death spiral is when you survived but did slightly worse than you should have, it makes the game a little bit harder, you do even worse the next time, etc, and finally die because you run out of food or money for incremental weapon upgrades or try to break out of the spiral and push yourself too hard. As in SotS: the Pit.

avatar
JudasIscariot: but it does have damage spiking, especially with beam spells. For those not in the know, "damage spikes" in the context of ToME is when you first meet a magic user or two and as soon as you meet them, your HP goes from full to 1/4th of the bar :D

So be careful when autoexploring, kids.
Oh yes, this.

Zoltan999: Yikes!! LOL...wtf is that? Is damage spikes like an aura the magic users have? And does this always happen?
Damage spikes like in math: burst damage, powerful attacks.

Your character has a basic melee and ranged attack. "Warrior" special abilities and classes synergise with it well: as a "warrior" character rises in level, gets stronger, quicker, and acquires better weapons, both the basic attack and talents improve.

Magical abilities are completely orthogonal to it: when your mage gets better at casting fireballs, he doesn't get proportionately better at hitting things with a staff, and a staff which is good for fireballs isn't necessarily good for hitting things.

Thus, because everything is on a cooldown, mage abilities (and guns) are balanced against weapons which synergise with basic attacks by being individually stronger: (toy example) a purple laser is twice as strong as a bow attack but has a 3-round cooldown and costs mana, while a bow can be shot every round. But you have to fight many monsters, while a monster only has to fight you. So if you turn a corner and see a skeleton mage, it's going to open with a purple laser.

Designated casters (skeleton mages, elf mages, imps) are usually squishy, so as long as you can survive the initial damage spike (laser to the face) and kill it fast, you'll be fine. But groups of casters (which will laser you at the same time, ouch) and especially rares (tougher monsters which get additional talents on top of what a base monster normally has, so not guaranteed to be squishy) are bad news.

Oh and one more tip: projectiles have speed and are dodgeable if they're slow enough and you're far enough that they don't reach you in a round. If there's a slow-moving void blast or [s]pile of crap[/s] earth missile flying at you, sidestep and you won't get hit. (Lasers and lightning are effectively instant, and paradox mage pokes move back in time.)
The price to content ratio is staggering for the base game alone. Don't miss this if you enjoy roguelikes. I have it on Steam where it does seem to require the client to be running but it also has access to cloud saving. Very useful given the many unlockables. I'm guessing Galaxy doesn't have that feature?

Oh yeah, brotip: you can unlock everything in Exploration mode afaik. So you don't have to get fed up playing the starter classes for ages before you get something more interesting. Infinite respawns are gamey but otoh this is the kind of game where you can walk into a room and be doomed from the outset if you don't know 100% what you are doing.

Seems they havn't fixed the problem with retina displays of Macs yet. Everytime I start the game, at first I have to go to the graphic setting and adjust the screen position.

I'm not sure that's true, I think a lot of the class unlocks require achievements (which need to be gotten on Roguelike mode), but I could be wrong as I've never played on anything other than Roguelike before.

Edit: Nevermind, Starmaker got it right. It's playing on Easy that doesn't unlock the achievements, not Exploration mode.

The game doesn't have Galaxy integration beyond installation and playtime tracking (no Galaxy achievements either), but the online features are present. I installed a fresh GOG version on a new PC, logged into my profile, bam, all unlocks synced.

Yes, as long it's not Easier.

There are 5 difficulty levels which differ by game content (monster level scaling relative to player level, artifact availability, chance of rare monsters, AI)
Easier - stupidly easy, huge bonuses to player, huge penalties to monsters, achievements are not granted, some unlockables are not available.
Normal - actual easy mode.
Nightmare - typical roguelike experience.
Insane - puzzle game, very hard but fun and designed to be winnable.
Madness - like hacking a portable console through a buggy app, chance of victory temporarily available on a case by case basis. Not designed to be winnable, and features used by previous winners were largely patched out.

There are also 3 permadeath modes:
Exploration - infinite lives, and monsters don't heal up when you die so "milling" is possible
Adventure - limited lives
Roguelike - one* life
*exceptions apply

Difficulty and permadeath can be combined in any way, so it's possible to play Easier Roguelike or Exploration Madness. However, Easier grants no achievements and thus prevents some unlocks, and Exploration only has one set of achievements for all difficulty levels. Each legit (loseable) combo grants its own version of achievements.

Stop it! You'll ruin my concentration. I'm trying to hypnotize the people at GOG:

Hypnotizing GOG Employees: Fix issues with your website...Fix Galaxy...Notify people about sales in a timely manner...include ALL DLC content in games...release new DRM-Free games along with Humble Store...Stop ignoring people on forums when they ask you a question...zzzzzzzzzzz...Yes, GOG, yes...you'll do all of these things...yes...

Strange, the game is listed as having achievements.
