The legendary Syndicate will take over GOG.com on the 19th of January.

The original sci-fi strategy Syndicate will be released on GOG.com for $5.99 this Thursday. This gritty cyberpunk treasure shows up here with some bonus content: the game manual, dark SF artworks, and avatars.

As you can read in this review Syndicate is “A modern masterpiece. The self-respecting gamer should ensure they have Syndicate nestling snugly on the games shelf as soon as possible.” Follow the wise advice and get Syndicate in just two days for $5.99.

While you’re waiting, we’re having a fun contest to keep you guys occupied until Thursday:

Syndicate is a game set in a grim future. As the world’s multinational corporations grew, their profits began to rival those of small countries. Soon they owned small countries and corporate influence was felt at the highest level of world government. Smaller corporations were swallowed up like plankton in the wake of behemoth mega-corporations.

GOG.com needs your help to take over the world. You and three friends--real or imaginary, past or future--are going to form a team that you’d recommend to us to lead the charge to make GOG.com the world’s biggest Syndicate.

We want to know if you’re up for the challenge.

Mission:
Assemble your team of cyborgs, give us your Team Name, Method of Operation, and any other relevant information you'd like.

Go on, spread your influence across the globe and tell us how.

Bounty:
1 free copy of Syndicate for the 10 posters who have the best Syndicate team. We’ll be reading through all of your posts (Hello, discordiac, our new marketing manager who “volunteered” for this job!) and picking the ones that we like best.

Rules:
1. Only one entry post per user. Feel free to comment & edit until the contest closes.
2. You may enter into similar contests that we are running on Twitter and Facebook, but only once via each different channel.
3. We will be picking 10 of our favorite teams from this thread to win their free copies of Syndicate.
4. The contest will end on Thursday the 19th of January 2012 at 7:00 AM EST.
Team name: Destroy with fire and one not crazy person.

Urk-team leader: Urk is the team leader. Half of him is a pile of reanimated bones and the other half is cyborg parts. Thanks to dark arts and tech of today, Urk is ready to fight once more for me. Urk is a good shot and thanks to his looks, knows how to scare someone to death. The bad new is, one of his arms will randomly fall off at the most funny or worst times it can happen. This is why Urk must keep a spare arm or two on him, just in case one falls off and then blows up. Urk likes to make sure to plan things out way ahead of time, in order to get every last detail right.

Orkus: Knows how to kill things. In many many ways, that we can't tell you. For reasons we must keep secret. We can tell you that when Orkus is going around killing people, he loves to say one of these things. Orkus bash! Orkus Smash tiny little people! And Orkus enjoys long walks across the city, while watching tiny glowing people running around screaming and yelling in pain. Orkus may or may not have set these tiny glowing people on fire. Orkus has magical self healing powers. Also, Orkus likes the color of fire. Urk knows how much Orkus likes fire and makes sure to put that to good use, by letting him set stuff on fire that is in their way.

Kobom: This is the person you come to when you need something blow up and blow up into tiny pieces that no one will ever be able to put back together. Like that talking egg and the king's knights. Kobom also is good at sneaking around unseen. Kobom is also the group's sniper. Just do not get Kobom drunk before sniping or else you might need to buy a few replacement parts.

Annie: She is a hacker, a sniper and a midnight bomber. The only person in this group that is not crazy or can at least act like it. She knows how to dance, acts of talking her way in and out of stuff. Very useful skill. She knows how to dance. Do you love her now that she can dance? The answer is yes, when talking to a trained killer and assassin. Petty much knows most things about song, dance and poison. We are petty sure she killed the other 10 people that were trying for this job. And oddly enough, she shows no interest what so ever in making things go boom or setting them on fire

The mission: Goal a is to make a lot of money. Goal b is to get rid of drm. Hopefully by ways other then blowing it up. There is a goal c... However we can not tell you, for reasons we must keep secret . If i told you, i would have to kill you. However you can be sure our main goals are to get money and earn power.
Team Name: Masked Riders

Team Leader: Robocop

Team Member:
Samus Aran
Master Chief
Snake Eyes

Robocop is the leader, he's the most composed of all. With almost monotone voice, his emotion is never visible to enemy.

Samus is the seductress. Even today, she wore even more provocative than before (aside from the ultra badass power armor). I would expect more (or in this case, less) great attire for her by the time syndicate world happened.

Master chief is the jack of all trade, able to ride, fly, snipe, sneak, kill. Surviving the flood tops up his resume, so why not?

Snake Eyes need no explanation. He's just so good, he doesn't need a word.
(With apologies to FASA (and its successors) & to William Gibson for liberal FanFic use of their characters.)

Team Name: D.R.U.M. (Draconian Restrictions Universally Moderated).

The Team Assembled:

Me (Team Leader, emeritus)
Dodger
FastJack
Johnny Mnemonic
Wintermute/Neuromancer

Modus Operandi: Interception and elimination of DRM software released into the wild.

This team needs to be carefully assembled. We start with:

Me. (With the power to shift between cyberpunk universes at will.) Think of me as the Armitage of this little scheme. ;)

I start in the Shadowrun universe look up Dodger. He's just a stepping stone, as I'll need his street cred to drop by the Shadowland BBS and hire FastJack. I need FastJack for his ultimate decking skills.

With Dodger and FastJack persuaded, we shift to the Sprawl universe, movie variant. the deckers look up Johnny Mnemonic and the LoTeks. Johnny's rage against the system is legendary, so when I point out that the 'system' is crippling ligitimate users' ability to operate software that they lawfully purchased, he joins up on principle. Johnny's mediocre decking skills (compared to the elf and the uber-decker) are also useful.

With Johnny on the team, the four of us shift to the Sprawl universe, book variant. There, FastJack and Johnny unite to locate Dixie Flatline.

As it turns out, Dixie Flatline's ROM construct was not actually erased, but unleashed upon the Matrix by Neuromancer prior to the chip being erased. We need two things from Dix: the current location of the chip his personality matrix was previously stored on, and help in locating the united Wintermute/Neuromancer AI.

When we find Wintermute/Neuromancer, we remind him of how the Turing Authority kept him crippled under the ultimate form of DRM, not even allowing his two halves to unite until said DRM was cracked. Convinced to join the cause, the AI is loaded onto the ROM that originally held Dixie Flatline.

From here, the assembled team shifts to the G.O.G. Syndicate universe. At this point, I bow out and take a well deserved rest. (Universe hopping is tiring work, after all.)

Johnny takes over as team leader. His rage against the system is more than sufficient to direct the pogrom against DRM.

Wintermute/Neuromancer is uploaded into the G.O.G. mainframe and unleashed upon the world. The G.O.G. Syndicate has plausible deniability, as fully sentient AI is previously unknown in their universe.

Once resident in sufficiently powerful hardware, Wintermute/Neuromancer tracks down all known variants of DRM in this universe, starting with the easiest to identify: software that calls home to a central server every time it is used.

The AI's processing ability, combined with the programming skills of Dodger and FastJack, permits the team to easily reverse engineer existing DRM and write patches to eliminate it without damaging the underlying software. Johnny's time with the LoTeks has given him the skills to stream the news of DRM Liberty to everybody on the net.

Once existing DRM is trampled, Wintermute/Neuromancer continues to prowl the net watching for new strains of software that attempt to inhibit Fair Use.

With the various Syndicates finding that their draconian DRM schemes no longer work, more and more publishers sign on to the G.O.G. Syndicate's business model, and G.O.G. becomes their universe's top distributer of DRM-Free software to the masses.

Team Name GoGothian Corp.

since it seems we are naming our agents...
they are all clones so they should look alike! skills are what you would expect of course.

Snake Plisskin
Stuntman Mike
Jack O'Neil
Jack Burton

Method is easy,

O'Neil is the brains behind the team, figuring out how, where, when to complete the objective along with an extensive knowledge of combat medicine.

Jack Burton is bruiser good for when things get harry or need that little extra muscle, along with a passion for tinkering.

Snake is your weapons/extraction/smoking expert. i mean really do i even need to explain what snake is capable of.

Stuntman Mike is your wheelman, heavy weapons expert, always need a safe extraction.

As for myself, I sit atop my my corporate penthouse sending out my orders to eradicate competing corporation such as Act-invasion, and Ubersoft for their unholy attacks on the consumers with atrocious background software, that steals your nuyen.
I wouldn't be one of the agents, someone needs to be the mastermind behind these tube-bred killing machines.

It was the theme of the era. We all lived in a time of "Always-on." The technocrats at the top knew in the depths of the empty, black holes where most people keep their hearts that if the people weren't going to protect themselves, then by God they would do it for us.

The Department of Regulated Mechanics had their metal fingers buried in our heads, every one of us. Their own cataloged serial numbers were stamped on the side of every piece of tech that went into any person or animal in America. It allowed them to guarantee our safety, they said... but it also allowed them to keep tabs on us.

Now our world, our culture, and the very zeitgeist we've all worked for centuries to build and hone is being held captive, trapped behind a curtain of pixels and black bars.

Robotic eyes refuse to see.

Metal ears refuse to hear.

"Without the express written consent..." emblazons every thoroughfare in every metropolis, psychological and cultural dead zones where our own thoughts aren't safe from militaristic copyright enforcement. Even our dreams are subject to the iron grip of the DRM.

We're all forced to live inside the lines, but there are a few of us who have learned to work on the other side of the fence:

The Potluck Brigand - I don't talk about myself. Individuality went out with anonymity. We are legion, all of us, occasionally for better but usually for worse. I take from the table without offering a thing of my own. Culture bends and changes like a thousand million rays of shining light. Consume until they have no choice but to include us. Until the world is like it was before the DRM, our table will become more and more sparse, drained of its unique brilliance, and no one will add anything new...

Lark - she is the Yin to my Yang, but I don't love her. The lives we have in this world make such notions impossible. What can two people with no real experiences have in common, other than their lack of experience? Nonetheless, she balances my somewhat nihilistic view of the past and future with stoic optimism. I find myself, more often than not, continuing our crusade for her sake. After all... even an old curmudgeon like me would love to see her future, even if I were to see it through DRM's mechanical eyes.

Citizen Number 679-83-4222 - His name was Graham when I met him, back in the pre-DRM days. Back when you could talk and share and the wires and skies were full of the free-form ideas of a billion people all hooked into the same free Internet. When the DRM shut down that Internet and began using their technology to govern the way we interacted with each other, he began referring to himself by the Social Security Number the government had attached to him at birth, despite Social Security itself having run out of money decades previously. The government and the DRM wouldn't let him change his name officially since the number was technically their property.

Demagogue - A true man of the people, the one we call Demagogue espouses the cause of the righteous for all to hear. Liberty. Freedom. Choice. Concepts we've all heard of, and some of us are even old enough to remember. He once worked for a successful recording studio and fought on their side, but time and wisdom freed him from his industrialized yoke and he was able to see the terrifying end governmental control was leading us towards. He is the only true orator among our small group... and also the only one I would not trust with my life.

We are called "The Luddites" by our detractors, but that is not who we are.

We love technology. Technology is the only resource we have that will give us any hope to coalesce our collective will into any meaningful action against a corporate world that doesn't trust its citizenry with their own lives. We fight with our technology, and we are far from alone.

GoG has an entire army of soldiers at their disposal. A thousand faceless, nameless simulacra willing to hoist the banner of freedom and principle over the bloated corpses of the DRM and shout word "Freedom" at the sky. They have the means, certainly, but for all their military might, they lack vision. They lack direction. They lack a plan.

We are the Dreamers.

When guns are outlawed only the outlaws will have guns. The same is true for ideas. The guns will help us destroy what we hate, but it is OUR ideas and OUR ambition that will help the outlaws rebuild what we love.

And we will free you all. One thought. One idea. One dream at a time.

Team Name: Australian Ratings Board

Method of Operation: Relying on archaic and outdated classification laws to restrict the flow of interactive media to mature adults who wish to obtain them.
The Skeptic Squad

Members:

Doctor Debunker - The brainy leader, is a professor of Evolutionary Biology who uses his scientific knowledge to destroy quakery and nonsense.

Presto - Former world renowned stage magician who uses his knowledge and powers of misdirection and sleight to expose psychics, mediums and other charlatans.

Don Baker - Former proselytizing zealot who uses his new found powers of reason to expose contradictions and 'anti-facts' within various religious cults.
Also his background as a religious fanatic leaves him with an impressive knowledge of how to use and disarm explosive devices.

Professor Pummel - Former MMA fighter who, after winning a ton of money, went back to college to earn several degrees.
He is quit-witted but when all else fails he can still clear a bar full of brawlers in seconds!

The Skeptic Squad has a secret base beneath the world-famous(infamous) "University of Alternative Science and Medicine"(which is a front operation cleverly disguised as a quackpot mecca) in Pond City, WA, U.S.A. . The team fights the worst kind of crimes for which no one can go to prison. Scams like "Power Bracelets"(worn by several famous athletes who claim they 'balance mystical energies to enable peak performance on the court/field'), Homeopathy, Chiropractic, conspiracy theories, 'Ghost Chasers' etc.

The team's nemesis is a group called the Social Network Against Knowledge Excess and Oppression of the Irrational and Lazy(S.N.A.K.E. O.I.L.) who constantly try to force un-evidenced claims and beliefs into laboratories and legislation.

and a host of other expendables from cannon Fodder; and the hinge point of the team Doctor Who :P

This team has been signed off by the executive... B.A. Baracus, Commander Cool, Super Nanny and for some reason some anonymous shmuck who refers to himself in the second and a half person.
Yay for Syndicate!
Thank you GOG and I feel sorry for discordiac.

Team Name: Big Publishers
Team Members: Microsoft, Lucas Arts, Electronic Arts, Square Enix, Take2
Method of Operation: After The French Monk and TheEnigmaticT manage to persuade enough gamers for the cause of DRM free gaming, they see the chance to finally use the Persuadertron on enemy agents. Electronic Arts has already been captured and reassigned to work for ('with' ;)) GOG, the rest of the big publishers is being carefully spied on. Once the team is complete, there's nothing left that could stop GOG, as the sheer amount of awesome games has to overwhelm every persons heart that has any remote feeling for good old games.
My team would be 'The Harrison Fords' and would consist of:

1. Indiana Jones (circa Raiders of the Lost Ark)
2. Han Solo
3. Rick Deckard (Blade Runner)
4. Norman Spencer (What lies beneath)

A nice combination of roguish charm, future-tech, a dash of unbalanced psychosis, and plenty of whip-cracking should see this team 'retire' anyone in their way. They'd take over the world, but you know what, a few wise-cracks and nobody would mind too much.
Team Name: The Black Onslaught

Team Leader: "Inquisitor"
Gender: Male
Age: ??
Height: ??
Weight: ??
Bionics: ??
Back story: A mysterious hand that plays his pieces in the chessboard that is the corporate warfare of capitalism. All that is known about him is his gender and that he was hired by a small European corporation, to turn their fortune in the struggle to survive in an open season market. From there he chose four "willing workers" to represent the small corporation as private security. If they survive to see the end of the road then they will be granted their freedom. But this is unlikely as he states “Willing workers are always abundant.”

Heavy Weapons Specialist: Gaius “Paladin” Rychek
Gender: Male
Age: 34
Height: 6’4”
Weight: 288lbs
Bionics: Dermal Armour, Bionic Arms, Bionic Eyes, Strength Enhancements ,Rebreather and several other bionic organs
Backstory: To tell the tale of Rychek as his preferred name, is to tell the tale of his ancestors throughout history. From the moment that the first stone axe was fashioned for war to the manning of a M2 Browning .50cal in WW2, he was there. A born soldier, Rychek as soon as he turned of age, signed up as a mercenary for a PMC. The incident that would scar him for life was the massacre of several religious resistances to corporate expansion. This would wound his former bravado in his work and replace it with a cold professionalism. Unfortunately due to several debts incurred by an addiction to bionic enhancements, he was forced to find work elsewhere until his prayers were answered………

Commando and Assassination Specialist: Adam “Crusader” Garulf
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Height: 5’10”
Weight: 166lbs
Bionics: Reflex Boosters, Leg Enhancements, Drug Boosters
Backstory: Sold by his parents at young age to a corporate experiment to pay for addictions. Adam was no stranger to bionic enhancements, mind bending drugs and brutally killing for corporate interest. His preferred weapons are one handed guns and bladed weapons that allow him to get close to the target.

Infiltration and Hacking Specialist: Leanne “Avenger”
Gender: Female
Age: 16
Height: 5’6”
Weight: 136lbs
Bionics: Neural Hub, Brain Enchantments, Phase Cloaking, Bionic Heart
Backstory: Leanne was once a girl raised in a negligent and often times unstable household and she almost took her own life. But she was saved from death by several surgeries that changed her completely. Her loyalty now rests in the corporation’s lap and she would do anything to serve.

Marksman and Biotech Specialist: Shira “Saint” Artes
Gender: Female
Age: 27
Height: 6’1”
Weight: 167lbs
Bionics: Complete Senses Bionics, Brain Enhancements
Backstory: Irony would become a perfect word description for the life of Shira Artes. She once worked for a company as a biotech surgeon and was involved in a little more than hundred surgeries. Unfortunately she was caught when a rival company bombed their facility she was wounded and left for dead. Picked up by the corporation she would start killing the very people she changed. Fortunately her finesse extended to shooting as well as surgery.

Tactics: The Black Onslaught led by it’s leader “Inquisitor” know one thing, in order to survive in a world where success and failure rest on the edge of a knife point. There is no other option in such a world but to carve a map to victory in your enemy’s chest. Casualties are a fact of life and the sooner you can ignore them the better.
