can anyone confirm, if the gog version of star wars dark forces has an own (and better than glovepie or other freeware) mouse support for looking up/down, secondary fire to 2nd mouse button?

i looked already in the dark forces forum on gog but didnt find the confirmation, so maybe on general forum this thread has a better chance.

It doesn't really need it because the game auto aims up and down. As for as looking in order to place a jump or a secret, you have the HOME and END keys. Don't forget, when the game was made the idea of 'free look' and 'mouse aiming' was a long ways off.

so you did play the game and didnt need any up/down aiming like in old doom games?

Pretty much. On the first level, when you are breaking in to grab the Death Star plans, there are a few troopers up on an overlook. Now if you know where the elevator is you go up there and take them out, however if not you can back away from the building on which they are standing. If they are close enough to the edge your blaster should automatically hit them. Mind you if they back off to where they are partially hidden, your blaster will start shooting strait ahead again.

It's a VERY primitive shooter. :D

Bought Dark Forces some hours ago and it works like the retail version I used in conjuction with D-Fend Reloaded (a DOSBox GUI). You can't bind looking up/down or secondary fire to the mouse. The game autolocks on enemies regardless of their elevation, but there are some specific spots where looking up can make it a bit easier for the game's autolocking feature to kill those higher than you.

actually you can with glovepie, here is the guide. just make sure that in the dosbox config output is set to opengl "output=opengl", as it seems not to work with ddraw and probably other too. but this solution isn't working that smooth ingame as we are used from games with native up/down support.

so you can confirm that the gog version is just a cd version with dosbox and without a gog made extra program for mouse look up/down support? thanks

I was talking about what options the game itself gives you and from what I have seen in both cases (retail version powered by D-Fend Reloaded and GOG version), there are none.

Seems to be the same from the little I played the GOG version.

thanks,

even if this feature isn't essential, it looks odd to me when the gog staff prefers to spend time on passwording the packed setups instead of coding extra mouse support for dark forces.

Well, it's not like the game is supposed to be played with freelook, their job is to get the game up and running, the rest is basically game modding and/or remaking.

Why should they add that? It never was in the game the first place. I much prefer they make the original game play as it was available on modern OS.

Furthermore to do something like this you would need to have access to the source code of the game which GOG don't. Without the source code is almost impossible to add extra features or fix bugs without disassembling the game (which takes an expert and way more time than is justified for such a low budget rerelease). So your comparison is quite silly, even if I strongly disapprove of passwording the setups myself.

And finally, if you want mouselook so badly, you can use the source port DarkXL, but be warned that the game is not completeable and there are still bugs, including gamebreaking ones:

Sounds like most people are playing this game on the easy difficulty. In mission 4 I was getting killed by the laser turrets in the ceiling before autoaim could pick them up. Looking up (using keyboard) made it quite a bit faster to hit and destroy them.

Of course on the easy difficulty the laser cannons are not there, it really is a lot easier.

If you don't mind fiddling with a third party program, a source port might work, after a cursory google search I found DarkXL but there are probably others.

I'm playing the game on a "retro" PC, MS-DOS and all that (with Roland MIDI card for soundtrack). I reassigned keys Q and E for looking down/up with my WSAD configuration, that made dealing with the enemies above and below much easier for me.

I don't understand why some people want to emphasize how "primitive" this game is. I think it's awesome, amazing work from the team that created it.

After I finish the game I'll try DarkXL on a more modern PC, thanks for the tip!
