... and my mind is blown. Especially "The Second Renaissance" flashed me hard. I wouldn't have thought that it would be so intense. After I had seen "Final Flight of the Osiris", I thought that these short films surely are overvalued. But then... POW! I sat in front of my TV, blown away, speechless. The Sequels could have been so much better. So much potential given away.

I guess I'll have to watch more anime. I know "Dragon Ball", "Pokemon" and that kind of stuff, but I'm more interested in mature things like "Ghost in the Shell". Any suggestions?

Well, Ghost in the Shell, clearly. Jin-Rō's brilliant (US: Jin Roh: The Wolf Brigade.) But frankly, where anime shines are their series, well a small number of them in fact but still (Like Ergo Proxy for instance if you fancy cyberpunk, or just goog old Cowboy Bebop if you like highly stylized stuff)
I hate anime. I can't stand anime. When i say an anime is real good, it kinda means something.

"Cowboy Bebop" is one of the best things done for tv ever.

Myazaki movies are not overrated.

"Jin Roh" is surprising. Really great. Disappointing if you're in for a star wars evil empire overthrow thing, but if you just want a reflexion on the red riding hood and the roles attributed by society, it's a good film. With magnificent art and even more magnificent music.

Okay "Akira" turned out to be very good. A bit frustrating at points, because of weird deviations from the manga, but still, very watchable and rewatchable.

"Death Note" is brilliant. But unbearably tough, very very unfair (the author totally sides with the baddies, when it comes to distributing strokes of luck, but i guess it would last just 5 episodes without this).

"Hellsing" is hilarious. The original series is stylish, in addition. The OVA is just dumb and gratuitously gory. But fantastically so.

I hear "Samurai shamploo" (didn't get hooked) and "Tokyo Godfather" (not seen it) are great. "Grave of the fireflies" is good too.

Damn, that's quite a list already...

Shinichirō Watanabe, the guy who made Cowboy Bebop actually did a couple of the films in the Animatrix. Detective Story (written and directed) and Kid's Story (directed), I believe.

How could you not get hooked? I mean it's pretty much Cowboy Bebop with hip hop and samurais. Well hip hop's far worse than blues + jazz of CB, but samurais are cool!

<poke>
Also if you like looking at people whine all the time, you can watch Neon Genesis Evangelion

Dunno about him personally, but I do know that guys who made Cowboy bebop also made Ergo Proxy, so ... there!

From the top of my head right now (without mentioning any Ghibli movies, as they just taken as granted):

Wings of Honneamise
Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind (almost Ghibli...)
Metropolis
Perfect Blue
Tokyo Godfathers

Cowboy Bebop: The Movie is amazing.

I don't know all that many mature anime movies, but there are some great series. Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex is my favorite one, and Black Lagoon is crazy and great.

In retrospect, I think the Animatrix was a tad overhyped. I too loved The Second Renaissance (and Matriculated comes to mind as well, for it's Aeon Flux-esque visuals) but even at the time it came out it looked to me like it was a cynical marketing ploy to keep up interest in the Matrix, series with all of the buzz surrounding Reloaded and Revolutions. I personally think that they should have had more stories, or made them longer, to make the entire collection feature-length (I think it was 30-45 mins., IIRC).

Fenixp and amok pretty much share my taste in anime from what they recommend, so I totally second their recommendations. I would add though Ghost In The Shell 2: Innocence, in addition to the original Ghost In The Shell. If you want more dystopian cyberpunk-ish anime, Akira is also worth a watch.

I have a special place in my heart for Wings of Honneamise. It's one of the finest anime films ever made, IMHO. It's best viewed in a pensive mood though, because while there are some good action sequences it's not an action movie by any stretch. Same with Jin Roh, which can get pretty depressing near the end.

If you're going to watch Neon Genesis Evangelion (and you have been warned; it's a very demanding anime to watch because you'll be driven into fits of frustration and WTF moments), I'd actually recommend watching the Rebuild of Evangelion series instead of the original. The plot in Rebuild is a little more coherent...

Death Note was a fantastic show, but you do have to make allowances in your mind for fanservice moments and the appearances of some stereotypical anime tropes. *cough*Misa*cough*.

If you also like the medieval or feudal Japan settings I can highly recommend:

Series:
- Berserk (Dark Fantasy, medieval setting) (preview of the remake (not yet translated): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JXhovonisM4&feature=related)
- Claymore (Fantasy, medieval setting) (fantrailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IBERUgx6ChQ)
- Samurai X (Feudal Japan)
- Korozuka (mind f*ck)

Movies:
- Sword of the stranger (feudal Japan/China) (trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-iI31EKaLZE)
- Appleseed and Aplleseed Ex Machina (Mecha) (trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZkag7M_i5A)
- Mononoke Hime (or anything by Miyazaki, bit less adult, but still very good) (trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pkWWWKKA8jY)

And if you like the movies/series, also read the manga, as that is often better.

I can name a lot of really good anime movies.

Castle In The Sky (aka Laputa)
Time Of Eve
Ghost In The Shell
Mermaid Forest
Gantz 1 & 2. They are not anime though, but live action movies. Top notch though.
Fist Of The North Star
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Ninja Scroll
Redline
Tokyo Godfathers

This is just a short list of what I can remember, but there is a whole lot more really good movies.

All together they actually reach approximately 90 minutes. So it's okay, I think. But you're right, a full-length anime in the style of "The Second Renaissance" would have been great.
