ovoon: I'd recommend the Berserk manga over the show. It's significantly better in just about every way. The story is 300x longer, the art is so good that it would be really tough to animate, and the atmosphere wasn't captured nearly as well in the show. Also, the show isn't as gritty. And Berserk is the grittiest thing I've ever read.
Well yes I agree with that (same goes for Trigun, but it stil handled itself better than most adaptations in regards to original material especially considering there were only 2-3 volumes out at the time), but I was naming popular or common choices among what could be considered entry level anime.

Not to mention that the manga would be a significant investment in time and money (especially with it only being about 2/3ds to 3/4ths the way done with the recent end of the Millennium Falcon saga and only about a volume or so coming out each year) and some people aren't really willing to make that investment.
I'm going to throw these out there, and I'm fully expecting to get a "Your tastes are bad, and you should feel bad" response:
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (the full series, not the movie-cuts of the Laughing Man or Individual 11 stories)
Witch Hunter Robin
Tower of Druaga, both the Aegis of Uruk and the Sword of Uruk. (Definitely over-the-top silly at times, but a good story overall)
Darker than Black (It's already been mentioned a couple of times, but another vote for it never hurts)

I never buy manga unless It's the complete set and I do it all at once. Most people read them online, because it's free, legal (if it's fan translated) and easy.
I totally agree.
