Many people probably heard about the popular game Playerunknown Battlegrounds, but not many know that this game is insanely popular in China and it's the reason why it will hit 20 million copies soon.

Millions of new Chinese players have flooded Steam in the last few months, and it is interesting to see the sudden change in Steam statistics during the last few months:
http://store.steampowered.com/hwsurvey

56% of surveyed Steam users now use Chinese as main language, compared to just 21% English !!!
It seems Windows 7 is insanely popular in China, it now has 63% users, compared to Windows 10 at just 28%.
Nvidia and Intel are much more popular than AMD in China, the percentage of Steam users with AMD CPUs and GPUs fell dramatically.

Also it seems Chinese players have better computers than the average Steam user had (China is heavily PC focused, there was a ban on foreign consoles for a long time):
- there is a significant rise in the number of 4 core CPUs
- many more PCs with 8GB of memory
- increase in percentage of processors with higher clock speeds
- increase in hard disk storage
- number of users with 1080p monitors has increased
Yeah, this "Chinese invasion" has also severely driven down the percentage of Mac and Linux users. Grim future for non-Windows PC gaming?
Meanwhile at Valve...

Historically speaking, Mac and Linux are doing better than ever as far as gaming is concerned, but they never were and never will be able to directly compete with Windows.

I'm not talking about competing with Windows (I'm well aware the only one who can bring Windows down is Microsoft itself), but more of indies seeing macOS and Linux shares dwindling and not bothering with them anymore.
Doesn't Tencent have a Steam competitor named WeGame underway? I wouldn't be surprised if Steam gets Great Firewalled sooner or later.
China may have more players, but paid copies are less because most of the gamers in China play at CyberCafes (It's like 1999 USA).

It will be interesting to see if the Chinese firewall happens. President Xi has adopted a new policy and says he is going to push for a more open business market for foreign companies.

I wonder if everything in China may go F2P so that companies can make the money off the consumer instead of the CyberCafes. The Cafe business model won't change - rent time and sell food and beverages, but if gamers have to pay for loot crates and gear in F2P and/or subs for MMOs they will have less for game time and food and beverages in the Cafe.

The return of the arcade!

And why shouldn't they? After all it's where they make most of them.

It's interesting to see the overall effect this had on the hardware survey, so thanks for sharing it.
Hmm, interesting...should we be concerned about the Yellow Peril then?
sorry, I don't really get what the point of that post is...yes, China is increasingly an important market, and global entertainment coporations will cater to that market...so what?
Did I ever tell you about the time I went to Beijing?

That place is WEIRD!!!!

They built the airport right in the middle of Chinatown.

That's racist.

Yeah, that is a shame, especially considering that there are a lot of cross-platform game engines available these days that make the process of publishing for all 3 relatively painless.

Please tell me you are trolling or being sarcastic.

Somebody who has "free speech activist" under their username can't take a joke and is going to play the race card.

I'm totally serious of course. Gog should be a safe space for everyone, it's not ok for TinyE with his white privilege to make such insensitive comments, especially given the history of Sinophobia (e.g. the Chinese Exclusion act of 1882) which has caused lasting trauma to Chinese in the US.

(Just trolling...but I still don't get what the point of the original post was...yes, there are a lot of Chinese, and now they can afford pcs?)
