I do like that for a low price you can buy a star which would give you a unknown game from the GOG store. It will not be a game you already have and it could be a really expensive game.

However that random element does bring it close to the loot box gambling lure. You are not going to get a copy of something you already own but you might want to pay another star in the hope that you could get a more expensive game or a better game.

What do all of you think?

I hope to sometime manage to have all GOG games, so star deals are basically a game at a discount, steep or not so steep. For this sale, I'm aiming at the MOO level of spending, so once I get what I see myself getting (mostly due to their discount), I'll get the rest of it through star deals.

Star deals (and similar ones) should not be seen as "Hey, I have a chance to get game X for $3" but as "Hm, I want to spend $3, wonder what I'll get for it". So basically, only get star deals if you are happy spending the money, not getting something out of that spending.

I do see your point, the star deals bring it close to the Loot box but the impossiblity to get a clone and the cheapness of it does make it differant to loot boxes. I am just concerned that this trend might create something much worse.

Not the first time GOG used this format. There were pinatas and luck of the Irish before, and most likely another one or two that I forgot. So GOG isn't doing this because of loot boxes, they do it because people enjoyed the format.
i really hate the idea of rng in buying games.
i would much rather prefer packs of games together with a discount thrown on it, but rng spinning the wheel to maybe get a higher monetary value game is bad.
while this isn't ea or steam cancer, it is clearly not great.
buying games should stay free of rng/rolling the dice and while i get, that this can be fun for a lot of people, i much rather not have it on the one site, where i actually buy a game without supporting the darkness that is drm.

i can't find a simple way to look at the list of games they are currently throwing into the lootxbox/starbox and although i asume, it is not made clear, that every game has the same chance to be picked.
and there is the question of possibly just putting crap games in the star lootboxes instead of great great games.
i know taste is subjective but u get what i mean.

so overall not a fan, and how about a different idea, u can buy a gog calendar till christmas/new year and u get a new game every 5 days for the whole month and u know exactly what game it is gonna be and how much overall discount u gonna get, this way u got your game to play for 5 days and sth. to look forward too and make it a higher monetary value one on the 25th..

then comes the whole issue of young children using gog or grown ups with a gambling problem.
gog should be a save place from drm and rng and lootboxes of course, i wanna go here and get exactly what i want how i want it and this is not it.
also time to disable the gog newsletter, because instead of reminding me of good deals for great games, it now suggests to me to gamble for fuck knows what.

I feel very, very, VERY confident in saying this is not true. I can almost guarantee you the odds of getting Divinity Original Sin 2 are lower than many of the other crap in the stars pool/
While I'm the collecting type, I'm not the gambling type and much preferred the insomnia sales. I think I only ever participated in this sort of RNG promo once.

I've just participated in it for the final time. I've played a little with it every time that I've seen it on a sale so far and so far it's almost always crap I wouldn't give my enemies. I just bought another a few minutes ago for one last try.... and the game I got was so to the point..... ClusterTruck. Yep. That was my last one ever.

I can understand what you mean, we always want to save money and get the best deal. The fact that it could be total rubbish can be very offputting but also tempting to buy more. That is what I am concerned about.

Ok update, you will only get that are more expensive then the star. It is imposible to get a gift that is cheaper then the Star price.

Still no guarantee that the discount will match or exceed the 75% discount the crap is often available at in more ordinary sales.

If I weren't directing so much of my gaming budget toward stuff not on GOG these days, I might consider buying all of the crap that could potentially show up in sales like these at 75%+ off for $2.50 or less so the sale can ONLY give me the stuff that would be discounted more than usual.

(I've been buying mostly DOS and Windows 3.1 CDs, cartridges for my Retrode, and books on programming for DOS and Windows 3.1 from AbeBooks as recommended by the Open Watcom C/C++ Getting Started guide, the Free Pascal wiki, comp.os.msdos.programmer, etc. For example, I just received a copy of Borland's Turbo Vision Programming Guide which I intend to use with Free Pascal to write a DOS analogue to free installer builders for Windows like InnoSetup and NSIS.)

Lot of these stars are something I end up regretting, but I did get Order of the Thorne: King's Challenge which I LIKE!
I'll tell you my opinion in a second...

Well I ended up with Space Rogue which looks like an Elite inspired game from 1989.

Why GOG Why?

Now I like my classic games but games from the eighties, I struggle with - The only exception was Papyrus Indy 500 which from memory was the same year(?) which is epic.

Seriously though, I prefer the Insomnia sales.

Even though it's not in spirit of the sale, at least for past events I remember support letting me refund games if I hadn't downloaded them yet.
