There is no such thing as the greatest or best in life. That is a policy that I follow and it is the same for video games.
Frankly, I have favourites. Not a single item. When you choose something as the definate favourite, you are limiting yourself.
You can have an item (i.e. a game) in which you so completely and utterly relate to in some manner that you feel it is the best thing out there; ever! This does not make it the single, best, greatest thing in the world.
Sorry if this is a bit dick-ish of me but, yeah.
It's hard to choose only one game.
But my all-time favourite would have to be Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver.

Exactly. And since taste =/= quality, talking about favorites is actually off topic.;P
Though it is possible to have one favorite game, especially that is doesn't require the knowledge of all games, typing one, greatest game ever is impossible. Two factors here, one being the requirement of omni-knowledge of games, and two, a state in which one game can be described as better than the other, and that is impossible, how can anyone argument which one is better, Civilization or, let's say, X-Com. Or Bionic Commando and Another World.
So yeah, it does ruin the topic, but it is being a pit pointless to begin with.
Perhaps it should state "Single, and number one, favorite game of all time". ;)
And so, i would also like to apologize for pointing that out, and spoiling the belief in One, And Only One Greatest Game Of All Time, just in case anyone wanted to burn the infidels on a stake.

We are such cynics aren't we xD
Don't have one really. But I do have:
Most played: Counter-strike: Source
Most unexpectedly wonderful: Beyond Good & Evil
Most time spent in character construction screen: Neverwinter Nights
Most consistently enjoyable sequels: Grand Theft Auto

Oh, that word has such a bad ring to it today, like the name Adolf. Cynicism is now a "bad" thing, and mostly conceived as such by people who don't know the roots of the idea.
So, therefore, i say we're a bunch of realists. Doesn't sound so evil now, doesn't it? ;)
We're the merry realists, that go around the world happily, seeing the beauty of the world as it really is, using logic for reasoning, because Spock was so cool, won't You join us... OR DIE?;P
I feel the need to bump this.
