Let me say, I admire GoG.
Such huge library of games I have on steam, yet wish I purchased them here sooner.

What if , for a small fee, I could transfer my games here, and get a free one as an incentive? Like after transfering 5 games, I get a select indie title?
That would only work if the publishers of the titles being given for free agreed to give them away for free. The math doesn't add up any other way. Let's say the average game you purchase is $20 and GoG gets 30% of that. That means if you buy 5 games they've made $30. If they give you a $5 game out of pocket than they've effectively given up 17% of their margin before any of their costs. That's a huge chunk of revenue for a promotion percentage-wise.

The only way they can do stuff like Connect is cause the publishers agree to do the giveaway, either for free or for a lump sum from GoG that allows them to project the cost of the promotion in a finite way.

It'd be more profitable though than giving away a game for free on its own, such as happens with the free giveaways. If they wanted to, they could make it thematic and have it to be an old classic, to incentivise people unfamiliar with older games to try them out and get interested in that part of GOG's catalogue.

It may not be more profitable though. Like I said, it is likely that during the giveaways if they pay the developer it is a lump sum payment that they use to get people to the store. It's a fixed cost. In the suggested method the cost is not fixed and is variable depending on what games are given away and what games a person purchases. If the promotion was designed to only allow for certain games then it may be more profitable, but that's not how the original suggested promotion was presented.
How about a Connect-like system, but rather than as a freebies, the customer get a steep discount. This way both gog and the devs/publisher still get a cut.

The costs are less of a factor if they use the old games that they bought the rights to, plus I imagine offering a freebie as a reward for a purchase may offer better customer retention than a flat giveaway, even if a short giveaway draws more attention. It's similar to how they sometimes have giveaways where you get a game if you spend a certain amount of money during a sale.

That exist already called GoG Connect. Problem is only a few games for a short time are possible.

Frustrated Steam customers?
Who knows what anti-consumer corporate tactic will they do? So far nothing happens, but better safe than sorry.

it still need someone to pay for it, in case of gOg connect the participating publishers (which is why it is so few). gOg connect and an occasional free game is limited, you want many and free choice
