Relics is a perfect fit for test-driving these games for Western old games enthusiasts. The important text is in English (not the opening, but the clues in-game), it's not any less janky than something like Prince of Persia, and the premise itself allows for experimentation, a necessity if you want to get multiple endings. Most Japanese adventures games lack both usable inventories and action elements, but Relics has a bit of both. It famously came with a bare-bones manual, the idea being that people should buy the game, discuss new complexities over the water-cooler, and gradually build a fanbase to collect knowledge on its inner workings. So there is some trial and error involved, though nothing that would stand out from competing games.

Thanks for that great explanation. The Relics series seems to be a bit obscure even in the Nihon Falcom western fans community, I had made a little search, and so Rinne was a remake of one of them? And it was ported from sidescrolling to isometric? I don't know how original fans were, but IMHO, I like isometrics better.
Since that series seems to be pretty difficult to find outside Japan, the Anthology seems to be a perfect choice indeed.
OTHA, about other Falcom re-releases, I really should begin to learn japanese. I was keeping from buying games I don't want to play in the near future, to buy Falcom's games here on release. I will buy books and CDs instead. I know it will take me years but it still will be useful since there are many games, books and animes I would love to play or read or watch, but will never come in english at least.

Rinne is actually the third game in the chronology. After remaking Relics for Windows users, Bothtec developed a true sequel with the same isometric engine. They started to focus on Legend of the Galactic Heroes strategy games, but the company also built and sold ports of Falcom's games to Japanese mobile devices; Falcom got to do Rinne mainly because of the deal.

Interesting, thanks again !
I didn't know about Legend of the Galactic Heroes strategy games (only heard of the Sega Saturn Game). That series (Legend of the Galactic Heroes) is precisely one of those licences which haven't been officially translated (AFAIK) and in which I was interested.
Another series to add in the wishlist!
(But sadly won't appear here)

Hey doods, it's the 30th anniversary of Dragon Slayer!
First released on some date in September 1984, this was Falcom's breakout hit from the mind of Yoshio Kiya, who developed many company games under the Dragon Slayer brand. Highlights include notes of The Entertainer being played every time you take a step, horrendous balance issues patched up but never fixed, and barebones visuals the likes of which Hydlide outmatched a few months later. Some call this game the first action-RPG; I think Hydlide had a greater effect on such a genre (just compare it to the Legend of Zelda two years later!), but Falcom's game was equally successful and gave them a foundation upon which they could build an empire.
Just a year after, Xanadu came out and sold out everywhere. Now that Falcom had released the highest-selling Japanese computer game ever (they wouldn't know that for many years), new games like Xanadu Scenario II, Romancia, and Drasle Family went into development, and Ys in due time.

So today is the release of Sen no Kiseki II (aka Trails in the Flash II) on PS3 and PSVita in Japan, where preorders were soldout.

Hopefully Ys VI: Arc of Napishtim is next - that would make all the originally Windows Ys games available on PC in the West :)
