When was it ever charged at £39.99 (that's about $70). Even at release it was £35. I thought there were trading laws against raising the price then suddenly offering it as a discount.

As I recall, they always listed the RRP as £39.99 (and called the £34.99 price tag a discount).

Well, that's Valve, nothing new. During the last big sale (not this autumn one, but the one that happened during the spring or summer), they intentionally increased the base prices of nearly all developer / publisher bundles that they had on sale.

RRP perhaps, but I saw their last christmas or summer sale discount it from £30 to £20. Surely they need a consistent base.

Not in the US, supermarkets regularly mark things up with a new price and mark it on "sale" for the next two weeks at the original, full price point. It's pretty shady, if you ask me.

I think (not sure though) these laws are a European thing ... but my impression is that Steam sees itself as standing above the law (or even common decency) anyway, so I don't think it would matter. ;)

Holy crap, that's quite a deal! And ... Incredibly unfair. Eh, decisions, decisions... Meh, I suppose I don't really have even that much money ATM. It'll be on weekend sale at some point.

That site says the game had a 49.99 price. In September / early October, the base price dropped to $30.

So yes, they're lying. This is exactly what happened with the Quakecon sale.

Ok checked that its also for 10$ on Amazon so the daily deal is not so great.

I've noticed that Amazon usually matches their prices to Steam sales.
