Personally i like a hell of a lot more the Shadowrun setting than Divinity's setting. I played the old Shadowrun on SNES, but i never bothered with the lore and the novels until Shadowrun Returns. And i fell for the setting. Hard. Found some of the novels for cheap and grabbed them. They are not bad, by any means. If you can, read some novels, some rulebooks (as they do have some lore).

And, anyone else excited by the new Kickstarter for Shadowrun Hong-Kong?!
If I'm already a few hours into Dragonfall Not-Director's Cut, should I start over or just keep going?
If you play the non DC version you can compare it with the DC when you will start the DC. Things that you thought you knew will be different, other things will be completely new. I'd say keep going and play the DC afterwards.

Start over with the director's cut. The DC completes the experience for me.

If Dragonfall is a great expansion, Dragonfall DC is a great game. :)
Wanna know some trivia!?!?! One of my fav Nes games Nightshade was the startings that helped bring the SNES shadowrun to light!

I'm really enjoying the game as well but some of the combat mechanics bother me a bit (I'm straight out playing on Very Hard). Some examples:
1. You can't arrange your party members before opening door/triggers combat
2. Combat initiative - who gets to start? Sometimes you do, sometimes you don't.
3. The action point and movement ignores distance traveled yet doesn't when movement is part of a an action i.e. moving to hack or moving in order to attack melee
4. Action points are arbitrarily assigned/improved as game progresses - no link to character build/quickness.

Combat aside, everything else is done really well.

Seriously, Dragonfall didn't have too much of anything, but all of it was high quality - almost every talkable NPC in your 'town' was very fleshed out and well written, every mission had unique aspects which made it more interesting and fun... The whole game took very much quality over quantity approach.
Yes and no. There were multiple locations that I would have liked to been able to return to and flesh out more, the drug addicted ork girl in the nightclub, for one, the struggling smugglers from the competing city for second, as well as that hub in general. I felt there should have been more options with the coffee shop girl, as well as the magic shop's occupants. All of Dragonfall was huge upgrade from Dead Man's for sure, I just feel like it could have been the step from really really good, to mindblowing. That said, I'm cutting them some slack for working with budget constraints, etc, and I'm not saying Dragonfall isn't good? I'm saying that's it's SO good, it could and should have had more, at which point, it would have crossed the threshold into amazing.

Either way, I'm hoping Hong Kong is even better, as my Shadowrun itch is nowhere near scratched yet!
The writing is definitely top notch for a video game. Cyber punk isn't usually my thing, but I really liked how they handled it in Dragonfall. I was relieved that it was more about politics than it was about computer speak. The game has one of the coolest settings I've seen in a CRPG in a long time. I'm not into table top gaming, so I don't know if Shadowrun is always a good setting, but it was in this game.
The characters were all interesting and well thought out, especially Dietrich. I think one of the writers had to have been involved in the punk rock scene to write a character like that. He's spot on, that's exactly how old ex-political punks talk.
I liked the visual style, the character portraits and Blade Runner esque city looked cool and futuristic. The only weak spot graphically were the character models, but that's not a big deal to me.

Now that I've gotten the good stuff out of the way, I HATE the combat. The battles take forever. I must have spent at least two hours trying to get out of the Humanis compound while keeping Alexander alive, it got really annoying after a while. The game pits the player against like 50 enemies in some of the battles. It's over kill. Plus it really sucks spending about an hour on a single battle only to die right near the end. Especially when it happens over and over when each attempt takes upwards of 45 minutes.
It's also too damn hard. I was never able to complete the game. I couldn't finish the mission where you need to rescue the cyborg troll guy from the deckers that want to enslave him. Tried it about 8 times, wasted hours trying to beat that level. Had to just give up eventually. I don't know if I didn't stat my characters well enough, or what. Maybe I just suck at these kinds of games. Either way, it really blows to get immersed in a game world and then never be able to beat it.

I hope the writers on this game keep doing good work and make a lot more games, they're awesome. I'd also like to see more games based on the Shadowrun setting. But I have to give this game C because the combat is crappy.

What difficulty are you playing on? Also you can save during combat and if you're not into save scumming then just use it as a "checkpoint".
I have all sorts of praises for this game, especially in connection with its lore and general execution, but people have already said it all, so I'll focus more on the negatives.

The combat is easy to learn yet deep enough, but I have a problem with its hit chance calculation. How is it possible that my seasoned characters have only 32% chance to hit an enemy one tile away with a shotgun? Or let's take my melee character, who can't get more than 50% for his attacks. I'm not talking about using sniper rifles in close quarters or pistols from a large distance. Secondly, even when I get >70%, I still hit less than half the time, leading me to think that maybe the opponent's dodge skill or something isn't factored in that percentage.

Another thing that I dislike about this game is also related to combat. From what I've gleaned from the expansive lore, shadowrunners are thief-types who get in, avoid security, get the job done and exit quietly. Yet each mission devolves into an open combat against a small army of security personnel. I appreciate the combat, but not the bloodbath I'm forced to leave behind in each mission, despite having opted for a charismatic hacker character. I do love the options that skill checks offer me, though.

That said, Dragonfall is miles better than Dead Man's Switch, which was a lacklustre campaign merely intended to showcase the new engine, putting the onus on the community to create better modules. In Dragonfall the missions are better designed, the characters more fleshed out, and the overall atmosphere much richer.

Dragonfall's probably one of my favourite RPGs to come out of Kickstarter last year, I probably like it even more than D:OS and WL2. If it was as long as either game, it will definitely be the clear winner and undisputed game of the year for me.

Unless they upped the difficulty in Director's Cut, never really did find vanilla Dragonfall frustratingly hard. I played on very hard. A few fights were challenging fun, much better than the walkover that is Dead Man Switch.

It's slightly more important than in DMS, but still quite optional. It mainly gives you access to more loot and money, while there are always workarounds when it comes to main plot points. It's only really useful to beat skill checks and hack computer terminals instead of having to hunt for the password.
