Enough praise to fill the entire teapot.

They say the devil is in the detail. Cuphead, the long-awaited side-scrolling sensation has no shortage of either! First, the devil is out to collect on his debt from our careless hero. Then Cuphead's ensuing adventure is full of splendidly animated details, perfectly evoking the timeless stylings of those wicked 1930s cartoons we still can't get out of our heads. Its boss battles may be hard but your love for it will come easy, as the following reviews perfectly illustrate.

"Cuphead has been a longtime coming, and it's great to see that it lives up to its initial promises. It's beautiful to look at, and with a pitch-perfect soundtrack, it flawlessly captures the era its developers so clearly revere. It's also an intense action game that pulls no punches." — 8/10 Gamespot

"There's a cognitive brilliance about Cuphead that makes it more rewarding than most other platformer shooters. There's a process to every single fight: Introduction, dissection, analysis, execution. Liberally sprinkle in failure at each step. No one is going to stumble into success in Cuphead. Every victory is earned. Every victory is sweet." — 9.5/10 Destructoid

"It never runs out of ways to surprise, with the bosses getting even more inventive as the game goes on. It’s also made me chuckle out loud a few times, such as when I landed the final blow on a boss and the two birds that were carrying him on a stretcher swapped out their medicine pills for salt and pepper shakers. Every animation oozes charm, from the dancing hourglass that appears on loading screens to the way Cuphead pulls up his trousers at the start of each fight." — Recommended - RockPaperShotgun

Cuphead is now available for purchase, DRM-Free on GOG.com

Pop!
this game sent me to hell due to insane difficulty level. However the game control is so tight that you eventually figure out the strategy to deal with each boss. Game is extremely fun to play with friend. Been playing with non stop and it has been the best game i've ever owned
All those ratings seem so consensual.
I have been playing this game with my children in co-op mode for the past few days and they really loved it (it's funny how it's harder to play co-op for the run and gun sections than playing solo).

We are 1/3 way through the game and I've only got praise so far. The visuals and soundtrack are great, the boss fights are hard but not impossible (the more you try the further you go).
I would have loved to play this with someone but I have been told that it's too difficult and irritating.
You might not know that there are flying missions too! One of the boss fights reminded me of the Chariot game in the Three Wonders.
The only problem I have encountered is a small bug with a boss, it seems that she's not taking damage while she is instead. And the "it's too hard", "it's not that hard" diatribe might also depend on your shopping choices. If you buy the right upgrades things might get easier. Money is rare.
Also, BE CAREFUL: there is a bug that does not shut the program sometimes. It remains in the background. So Galaxy will not sync the savegames. And you will have to redo sh*t if you move to a different pc.

If you like hard-as-nails platformers then this is a good example with tight gameplay and pleasing graphics and sound.

Personally I'd rather it was a turn-based rpg because I'm crap at platformers so a punishing one isn't a pleasant experience. It's good that it's there for people that do like them.

Fortunately there are cheats available so the graphics and sound can be experience by those who don't enjoy the gameplay. There's a new trainer client thingy called Infinity that seems to be a free (for the basic client) alternative to the paid-for Cheathappens. I've only used it for Cuphead and tested it briefly on another game so ymmv. ;)
Cuphead is a classic run and gun action game heavily focused on boss battles. Inspired by cartoons of the 1930s, the visuals and audio are painstakingly created with the same techniques of the era, i.e. traditional hand drawn cel animation, watercolor backgrounds, and original jazz recordings.

The thing that turns me off is the heavy focus on boss battles. From what I've been reading, it's essentially a series of boss battles with small platforming and shoot-em-up segments slotted in-between. With such a beautiful graphical style, I'd much rather have seen a full-blown platformer.

Not necessarily in-between; you chose the level from a map and there are 6 platformer levels in the whole game. Some of the boss levels are side-scrolling shoot-em-up maps where you fly an airplane.

Me too, but at least with boss battles the devs managed to be more creative.
What worries me more is the difficulty.
Is there an easy mode with extra lives? 3 is so few nowadays.. for me.
