Blowing with the wind of nostalgia.

War Wind & War Wind II: Human Onslaught, two classic fantasy RTSs bursting with gruesome battles and stealth shenanigans, are available now, DRM-free on GOG.com.

In a world not unlike ours, where the most enlightened and powerful nation rules the other three with an iron fist, anarchy is about to break out. The first War Wind carries with it the battlecries of the four diverse races, fighting for resources, building their strongholds, and leading their armies of upgradable units through 28 different scenarios.

By the time the War Wind II: Human Onslaught starts blowing through the land of Yavaun, the power struggle between the four races has evolved significantly. The arrival of Humans upsets the balance even further, resulting in a cataclysmic war that will be decided by the fragile alliances and proper use of stealth skills that your units possess.

Promote and manage your army, and fight for supremacy in an alien world scorched by War Wind and War Wind II: Human Onslaught, DRM-free on GOG.com.
Shouldn't they be bundled together.
I remember liking a demo of the first one, I think. Very similar to Warcraft.

Someone should do video reviews of these.

Kirben: Why so excited? these games have the worst path finding I have ever come across, poor AI and the second game is completely unbalanced. I doubt GOG was able to fix the games without source code either, so expect completely random crashes back to the desktop too.

Nirth: Ouch.

Anyone with the GOG versions that can add their views on these issues?
I have never had problems with the pathfinding, in this version or the original. The units will always find their way. If you make the walk over a long distance by themselves they might choose the path with more perils/enemy troops, like in most RTS, if they calculate that one as being the shortest.

As for the AI: unbalanced as in dumb? Smart? Overweight?

Bottom line is you buy this for the nostalgia, maaaaan.

If that's not the case: it was a "B-movie" RTS back in the day that couldn't hold it's candle against Red Alert / Warcraft 2, but the setting and units were uncommon, as well as the base management. It also had hero troops with abilities and unit experience before other titles. You will end up repeating missions fairly early on as the difficulty can stack up; it's the kind of RTS where every unit counts (think something similar to Original War), so getting in a firefight with even a few disadvantages can mean a crippling defeat or a minor victory that will make it almost impossible to finish the mission.

Still, it's awesome, maaaaan.

Cool ! Always wanted to test those, back in the day. Not sure they're worth their current prices so i'll wait for a sale, though.
I like the graphic, but I'll have to check more reviews.
Maybe WW2 could be the beat one.

Try disabling the fog of war, and I would be surprised if you didn't see the path finding issues. The enemy would easily get stuck, and even sending units a short distance would frequently have problems if anything was in the way. Sending units a long distance, would usually cause a strange route, and the end point never reached by units.

War Wind 2 was completely unbalanced in terms of factions, especially the descendants. Check this review for a good overview of all the problems.

I used to keep returning to War Wind 2 due to interesting factions and world, only to get fed up by the flaws, and give up again after another random crash just as I was nearing the end of a mission.

Oh. My. God,
Instabought.
This has seriously made my day. I mentioned in another post it's taken me about ten years for me to try to get a working version of this game, and now, after a bad month, I see it here on the front page. Thank you! Thank you!
do the games work on modern pc's?

Well, that's your opinion man, and it might be right (there has to be a reason why this didn't catch up, after all). Still, for us who liked it, the imbalanced factions didn't mean much.
high rated
Balance is not what these games are about. Immersion in a completely original alien world are what these games are about.

+1. The imbalance ties into the story. Of course that if you're playing as the Descendants you're not going to have the best of military units - they're scientist. If you want to obliterate everything in your path, go ahead and play as the Marines.

One may say this completely screws up multiplayer, and that's true - it is a downside, but it's mainly been designed as a single-player game, so that's where it shines.

Everything except this part it seems: https://www.gog.com/forum/war_wind_series/single_player_scenario_problem_terminal_error

Though that one poster seems to have a solution if gog can/will accept it.

so no glitches, no sound, mouse or keyboard issues? no crashes except the ones in the link? that sounds almost too good to be true, since gog is not caring much about their old games nowdays.

Well, there is a stuttering issue, but it seems to not be widespread at the moment: https://www.gog.com/forum/war_wind_series/war_wind_1_stuttering
