Get in the dungeon--you’ve got some demons to slaughter.

Torchlight, a fantasy hack-and-slash from the makers of Diablo and the runner-up in the Final Round of this year’s Battle of the Games, is available right now on GOG.com for only $8.99 (that’s 40 % off) until Friday, July 13 at 8:59 AM EDT.

Just look at the resumé of Runic Games founders: brothers Max and Eric Shaefer (Blizzard North co-founders; Project Lead, Design Lead and Art Director on Diablo and Diablo II), Travis Baldree (Fate and Hellgate: London), and Peter Hu (Army Men, Diablo II). With such a team behind an isometric hack-and-slash, no further recommendation is required. However, we’re obliged to tell you this: Torchlight is a fantastic game. It offers AAA production value, excellent gameplay, randomized levels, a lot of monsters and loot, and, most importantly, it’s incredibly fun.

Torchlight doesn’t promise anything more than it is: a gorgeous, challenging, and highly addictive dungeon crawler. There’s no multiplayer, no co-op, no surprising story, and no ‘ground-breaking’ ideas--just pick your class (The Destroyer--warrior, The Alchemist--spellcaster, or The Vanquisher--rogue), select an animal sidekick, and get in the dungeon filled with secret rooms, traps, swinging bridges, levers, shrines, some non-monster encounters, tons of loot, and hordes of monsters thirsty of your blood. If the dungeon isn’t random enough for you, then why not take Torchlight’s very own editor, TorchED, for a spin and make your own levels, add customized monster units, and much, much more!

If you miss the good ol’ RPGs of the ‘90s, check how the modern hack-and-slash should look like for the ridiculous price of $8.99 for the next 7 days.

MichaelFurlong: I just started playing diablo 2 again, what with D3 being online only. I would be interested in playing this sort of game but really, what makes it better than D2? The graphics look cartoony which has never appealed to me.
I personally wouldn't say it is. The gameplay is good and has some improved mechanics (you have a pet who aids you in fighting who you can also load up with gear and send back to town to sell it which means you're in the dungeons longer... you can also catch fish and use them to transform it into a more powerful offensive unit of various types.) story's rubbish though, has none of the immersive lore in diablo and the locations are pretty generic.

Edit: If you just love these types of games & game mechanics then it's a great one and very accesible.... I just found Sacred Gold, Nox & Titan Quest to be more well rounded (the latter being my favourite outside of Diablo 2.)

Oh wow Torchlight is here = D I have it on Gamersgate and Steam. Now I will get it here too = D
Aaaargh. Already had the Xbox 360 version, just bought the PC version in Steam last month and also just bought it as a gift to a friend. Am I strange for really really considering getting the GOG version too, just because it's a bloody awesome game that I'll *gladly* pay for four times over? =)

The graphics aren't that bad once you get used to it. Also, try Sacred, which is better than Torchlight IMO.

Elmofongo: What makes Torchlight different from Diablo gameplay wise?
I keep hearing it is a straight up Diablo clone
I don't think it's all that different. If you liked Diablo 1, chances are you'll also like Torchlight. It's a simple game with simple story, simple quests, and simple locations, and it's a solid action RPG.
Good game, although very lacking on content. Still, worth playing.
There might be a huge issue with the GOG version;several people are reporting that the program crashes when trying to load a mod. This has been reported for a number of mods, so it is not a mod specific issue. This could be a game breaker.

PS.Apparently the GOG version does not support mods at all. This is a huge fuck up on the part of GOG, since the modding community is a huge part of Torchlight';s appeal.

Funny, until a few hours in the area of "languages" included, besides English, three languages (including Spanish, that interests me) but now appears only English. A pity, because I would buy it, but now I do not know what to do. Can anyone confirm the languages that are available in the game? Thank you very much.
Torchlight has better polished gameplay mechanics than Diablo 1,2. Much better user interface than all Diablo games, and on top of that a pet which fights together with you and it has it's own inventory and you can send it to town so you can sell all that crap without leaving the dungeon. And also fishing and transforming your pet into various monsters is awesome.

It's different in these things if you compare it with Diablo games, but it feels very alike them. One reason is the soundtrack, which is gorgeous.
Dunno about you guys but I preferred this over Diablo 3! No DRM issues and just an all round better game if you ask me! Looking forward to Torchlight 2
I think the main reason why I had much more fun with this and Torchlight 2 beta than with Diablo 3 is that itemization and item drops in D3 simply sucks. When you will finally find your first legendary item in D3 after weeks of playing, be sure that it will be a piece of crap which you don't need on your level anymore, and you must play for a MONTHS to find your first set item :-/. I didn't find any yet. Torchlight is much more rewarding in terms of loot and overall fun.

i don't care about items, nor about xp grind.
i like story, characters and cool fights.

does this game features that?

I want to point out that i don't like diablo 2 (haven't played d3) The first act was enjoyable but in second one i just gave up when i realized that i am doing the same thing i did in act 1 with only a palette swap.

Well, not really. It's more like "good old" dungeon crawler as all you are doing is going deeper and deeper - no "open world" content. It is more like Diablo (part one) than Diablo 2. But I really like that - I liked D1&2, like D3, so Torchlight appeared on my wishlist.

I'm afraid not... the fighting is enjoyable, the game is very nicely done overall, but if you're after a meaningful story and full fleshed characters, this is not the right title.

Have a look at Divine Divinity instead... similar combat mechanics on surface, but deeper game as a whole
