Get in the dungeon--you’ve got some demons to slaughter.

Torchlight, a fantasy hack-and-slash from the makers of Diablo and the runner-up in the Final Round of this year’s Battle of the Games, is available right now on GOG.com for only $8.99 (that’s 40 % off) until Friday, July 13 at 8:59 AM EDT.

Just look at the resumé of Runic Games founders: brothers Max and Eric Shaefer (Blizzard North co-founders; Project Lead, Design Lead and Art Director on Diablo and Diablo II), Travis Baldree (Fate and Hellgate: London), and Peter Hu (Army Men, Diablo II). With such a team behind an isometric hack-and-slash, no further recommendation is required. However, we’re obliged to tell you this: Torchlight is a fantastic game. It offers AAA production value, excellent gameplay, randomized levels, a lot of monsters and loot, and, most importantly, it’s incredibly fun.

Torchlight doesn’t promise anything more than it is: a gorgeous, challenging, and highly addictive dungeon crawler. There’s no multiplayer, no co-op, no surprising story, and no ‘ground-breaking’ ideas--just pick your class (The Destroyer--warrior, The Alchemist--spellcaster, or The Vanquisher--rogue), select an animal sidekick, and get in the dungeon filled with secret rooms, traps, swinging bridges, levers, shrines, some non-monster encounters, tons of loot, and hordes of monsters thirsty of your blood. If the dungeon isn’t random enough for you, then why not take Torchlight’s very own editor, TorchED, for a spin and make your own levels, add customized monster units, and much, much more!

If you miss the good ol’ RPGs of the ‘90s, check how the modern hack-and-slash should look like for the ridiculous price of $8.99 for the next 7 days.
I love Torchlight but recommend that people hold off buying the GOG version until the "no mods work" issue is fixed, since half of what makes TL great is the huge number of mods our there.
Absolutely release of the month!
Uhm, kinda late? And $8.99 is pricey, (compared to the price of the sequel I mean).

Been super curious about this game for a good while now. Think I'm gonna go for it.
Picked this up. Nice release GOG.
fuck & yes!

I already own the game but will be picking it up again on GOG just as soon as I pay some bills, dear god let this signal that TL2 is incoming too!
Thanks, GOG. Now I have a second and unsteamified copy - bought the first not long after Torchlight was initially released. I actually was eyeing the retail box a month or two ago, but decided against getting that DRM-free version, at that point. I have little love for physical copies of my PC games these days unless they're backups. Anyway, I'm really glad I didn't bite then.

Works splendidly still. I love that this game runs so well on my crappy lappie. Everything on max with smooth gameplay. I really don't understand why some people don't like Torchlight's cartoony style. It suits the game just fine, plus it's also the reason why it runs so well on underpowered hardware. I expect the sequel to run just as well, seeing as it still uses the same engine.

Not having working mods could be a downer, but as for me, while I dabbled a little with them in the past, I don't care much for most of that stuff. Still it would be nice if GOG fixed that issue, which I'm pretty sure they will in due time.
I'm hoping the mod issue is temporary and will get a fix soon.
I already own it on two platforms, but nice release anyways.
Sounds like a less casual version of Fate.
I did buy it and now I see, that the mods are not working ... :(
I am sure GoG will update their files with a fix. It is too big an issue to leave it alone. Hopefully they fix it before the sale ends so I can take advantage of it earlier :)
Pity to hear, since I can't imagine not using torchlight without mods like http://www.runicgamesfansite.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=489 and many others.

Hope GOG will fix this issue, I will wait and then buy the game,
wow...GOG really blew it with this release

No mod support really hurts the value of this release on GOG...

lukaszthegreat: i don't care about items, nor about xp grind.
i like story, characters and cool fights.

does this game features that?

I want to point out that i don't like diablo 2 (haven't played d3) The first act was enjoyable but in second one i just gave up when i realized that i am doing the same thing i did in act 1 with only a palette swap.
In my adventures in Torchlight, the items were my main motivation to play, and the story was runner-up. I didn't feel the need to xp grind because I gained xp at a reasonable pace just by playing.

I haven't tried all of the characters nor am I super far, but there have been a few ass-clenching battles after which I whoop and throw my arms into the air.

Normally, I'm right there with you. I don't like grinding for items or experience at all. (This is the first "dungeon crawler" I've enjoyed, actually. Diablo was not to my tastes.)
