Thanks, such thread is always the first thing I'm looking for in game's forum. Now I can finally make a clear decision if I want to buy/play the game (still hesitating).

MaridAudran: I am shocked to see this 20-year-old relic of 90s FMV adventure gaming hitting the digital shelves of GOG. Shockingly pleased that is. I spoke about wanting it on GOG more than once. I myself have very fond memories of it as a teenager (and not just because of the buxom blonde beauty of Beth Tegarden, however lo-res the video was from back in the day). Ambitious approach to a game for the time; Aftermath Media, the developer, bandied the term "interactive movie" about quite a bit. The narrative is mostly linear (the cost of all those FMV sequences adds up and they probably didn't want to waste them) though how you, the voyeur, answered a battery of psychological tests after each chapter influences the ultimate ending. Gameplay is very light, even for an adventure game. No puzzles or anything to solve--the takeaway in Tender Loving Care is the story, mood, exploring the environs and snooping in their private lives, the nuanced acting in veteran stage legend John Hurt (his co-stars are B-movie C-list actors), and the novelty of the psychological evaluations. Not for every taste; the writing and acting of the game is definitely not sophisticated (aside from Hurt) but I
enjoyed TLC despite its flaws and silly soap opera setups.
Great and spot on review (you should write one if you haven't yet)!

MaridAudran: I still have the original CDs to this game I bought in a Software Etc. $1.75 is well worth the price of nostalgia and convenience in obtaining a DD copy of this game.
Since you (like me) own the CD version of the game it might interest you that I yesterday found out a way to let the videos run non interlaced full screen. I stumbled over a discussion with the person who created the directx wrapper dxwnd and he modified the wrapper to support non interlaced videos for the game "The 11th hour". Since both use the groovie engine I decided to test it on TLC as well and it seems to work (at least on Win7/64). All you have to do is

1) Unpack
2) Start the executable of the wrapper
3) Click on the entry "Tender Loving Care" (should be unchecked) and chose Edit->Modify from the main menu
4) Change the launch path to the executable of the game (Path will be the same afair) and click OK
5) Save your setting by chosing File->Save (so you won't have to do it again)
6) Right click with mouse on the now green checked entry Tender Loving Care and chose run.
7) Hope that it works ;)

You can download the modified wrapper here.
john hurt, FMVs... insta bought. now i have a warm fuzzy feeling for the rest of the day

ReynardFox: So this barely interactive, tacky, pretentious, poorly conceived FMV game is alright to sell, but you reject Don Bluth's historically valuable ones?

Okay...
I don't think that's really up to GOG as Digital Leisure is kind of... Well protective of their profit margins.
I loved this game. I don't think you can see the results of the questions. They are evident in the ending though. The game picks the ending that would affect you most on an emotional level, using the questions as a guide.

There's another game I also have in my DVD collection, called PoV (Point of View). It would be great if that one found its way here as well.

Earlier in the thread someone posted that the results are an option after the game ends, I believe.

I'm in chapter four now and it works perfectly so far.

BTW: It's less crappy and less porny than I thought, actually quite interesting so far in spite of the extremely obvious/usual story.

I wasn't sure whether it's supposed to be "played" in one sitting since there is no hint of any save function whatsoever, but after clicking the X, I got asked whether I want to save the progress.
There isn't even any mention of that in the "help" area.
Well, it used to be a DVD, before gaming consoles and players with hard drives. There was no saving, only pausing. My guess is they just built a little player around the original content.

I actually just dusted off my DVD's for both TLC and PoV. I suddenly feel like going through them again.
Pardon me, but the GOG-version of TLC is terrible - the video quality is really bad. Please GOG, try to fix that, the game doesn't deserve such a bad re-release!

Thanks. That was my second concern (being crappy and porny) :D

MarkoH01: *snip*
Glad you liked my thoughts. And thanks a lot MarkoH01; I will definitely try out that wrapper. I thought the 700 MB executable version that GOG hosts was pretty small for a game that originally shipped on four 800 MB CDs (or a 4.4 GB DVD) and hope that's due to compression issues and eliminating redundancy from the original release format.

GOG.com: snip
Replacing the current low-quality videos with the superior ripped ones from the DVD should be quite easy since the new "port" is just a browser interface which seems to be chrome based and is just playing videos stored in the game's folder.
Every second user here could do it, so I wonder why it's not sold that way.
Has anybody contacted the devs about it?

There are also users here who have the German DVD version btw, it would be nice if that could be added as well after the license shenanigans have been worked out.
