One delightful pirate reunion

We have launched a new developer today--Telltale Games, the finest purveyor of episodic adventure games--and we’re starting off with three fantastic adventures: Sam & Max Save the World, Sam & Max Beyond Time and Space, and Tales of Monkey Island. All three games are on a huge "Welcome to GOG" sale for Telltale, and will be 60% off until 3 July.

Tales of Monkey Island, a game full of pirates, voodoo, and Guybrush Threepwood, is available for the next 7 days with a huge 60% discount--that’s $13.99 for the game with wallpapers, avatars, high-res artworks, developer commentary videos and more goodies.

Tales of the Monkey Island is the fifth game in the beloved Monkey Island series. The game follows fair-haired Guybrush Threepwood who, along with his new wife Elaine Marley-Threepwood, finds himself on a new adventure. This time, our heroes are on a goal to destroy two things: Guybrush's arch-nemesis--the zombie pirate LeChuck--and a voodoo pox that Guybrush accidentally unleashed upon the world. The entertaining story, stunning visuals, clever puzzles, and faithful adherence to the original Monkey Island games earned a lot of praise from critics and great commercial success as well. Tales of the Monkey Island is available on sale for $13.99 until Tuesday, July 3 at 6:59 AM EDT. Be sure to check out the other Telltale Games releases today, all of which are on sale for until 3 July.

If you’re a fan of old-school adventure games or a pirate (YARRRRRR!) you don’t really need any recommendation for and Tales of Monkey Island for $13.99.

timppu: In fact, I have this theory that the publishers are not even expecting anyone to pay the full price, but to get their games on promo discounts.
This is not a theory... Say "Thank you" to Steam. No matter how cheap a game is, most people will wait for the 75% Weekend Deal - and it's coming for sure! Even if you're setting the base price to $ 10... People will wait to get the game for $ 2.50.

You want to feed your family by selling your game? Well... Keep the price high and sell all your copies on two or three weekends over a year. Setting a normal price will just result in "This game never gets a decent sale"-whining -.-
The only Telltale series I like so far, great game. Have it from the Telltale website though, so no real need for me to repurchase.

Necdilzor: Does this mean we can expect the other Monkey Island games from now on? O:

Just checked out at TellTale and the full price for the complete series is $34.99.

Even at full price we are saving money at GOG.

SirPrimalform: No... because 13.99 + 21 is 34.99.
LOL! I forgot that xD! Stupid me :1

I think $34.99 is a bit steep by now, but who knows, perhaps those are the terms of the LucasArts licence...

SirPrimalform: Is Jurassic Park the only TT game you've played/seen? >.>
avatar
tfishell: No no, I've played a demo for Sam & Max (somewhat fun) and seen some of The Walking Dead (meh). I just don't see anything particularly innovative or interesting in their titles. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telltale_Games#Games_developed
I'm just not sure how you can draw the conclusion of QTE from Sam & Max... even if you don't think it's innovative or interesting, Sam & Max is definitely a point and click adventure. :P

To be fair, it's seems to be a good description of The Walking Dead though, from what I've seen, so if tfishell played that and played or read about Jurassic Park (not sure how Back To The Future fits into that equation, haven't tried it yet), then I can see where that impression is coming from, even if it's a generalization that does most of their other games like Sam & Max, Monkey Island, Strong Bad, Hector or Puzzle Agent an injustice.

Nice! :)

ToMI and S&M looks both good. BUt for now, I´ll have to stick with Blackwell Bundle.
Nice releases, but I spent too much money on games last month. But bring Back to the future here, and I'll buy it immediately ! :)

Bartman3010: Does the GOG version of Episode 1 of Tales of Monkey Island have Earl Boyd in it? I seem to recall they were able to get him shortly after the first episode was released and they re-recorded the lines to match.
avatar
jamyskis: Surely you mean Earl Boen? He of Dr. Silverman and LeChuck fame?
Nope, Earl Boen married Alexandra Boyd and he took her name (can't argue with Elaine)... take that Guybrush!

Well, they're pretty different - it's like comparing Space Quest with Gabriel Knight, one's comedy the other one's a drama.

DukeNukemForever: No. Telltale is an indie developer and got the license from LucasArts to develop some episodic games for the Sam&Max and Monkey Island franchise. If gog don't get LucasArts on board there is no chance to get the classics. Telltale also released the remake on their site, I guess they were involved in the engine but I'm not sure. It's not very likely for me we will at last we see this here.
Actually, Sam & Max was licensed by Steve Purcell to LucasArts. It is now being licensed to Telltale as Steve Purcell works with them.

Anyway, wouldn't LucasArts have to sign off on Tales being here? Or does Telltale's contract allow them to sell the game wherever they like? Good sign for LucasArts coming here soon? Or not?

No matter how much it hurt my purse, I was forced to buy everything GOG have released today (as well as Red Baron). This is a great day for adventure game fans on GOG.
Holy. Fucking. Shit.
This reminds me that I should finally play through Tales and Sam & Max 1-3. I bought them on some ridiculously low sale from Telltale a year or two ago. I've only beaten the very first S&M episode before I got distracted by other stuff yet again, and I've only tried Tales.

Anyway, both of these series may a bit lighter on the typical puzzles seen in other adventures, but they do retain most of the charm and humor of their predecessors. Thanks for reminding me I still had to play those, GOG. I actually might do that right now. Sorry. No moolah from me today.

Gray_Groose: I own the Tales of Monkey Island already, but it's a worthy purchase if you're somewhat interested in point-n-click adv. games, and a definite buy for Monkey Island-fans.

However, and I mean this with all due respect, Tales are not up to the par with the original installments of the series. Episodic gaming can really be hit or miss, and at least two of these five episodes are pretty average. As an overall package, it's certainly decent enough though.
avatar
Leroux: It's hard to compete with the first two, and maybe even with the third, but how would you compare Tales of Monkey Island to Escape from Monkey Island, assuming you played both?
They're pretty much on par with each other in my opinion (comparing Tales as a complete package to Escape). Both seem more like an homage to the original 3, although I would love, and am still patiently waiting for, a legitimate Monkey Island 5. **see inside joke at the end of Curse of Monkey Island**

Will that happen? I'm not too sure. In all actuality, Tim Schafer's original direction went completely askew at Curse of Monkey Island, but, eh ... I really enjoyed it when I was younger.

Leroux summed it up pretty well. I may have been unfair to TT in calling them one big QTE, but I thought it was obvious I meant it figuratively. I get kind of an "uncreative" vibe from the company, but I have not played or seen many other TT games.
