Pick up your blaster and fall in line, trooper!

Star Wars™ Battlefront™ II, a firsthand experience of the greatest Star Wars™ battefields, is available now on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount!

Star Wars™ Battlefront™ was the answer a decade old question: "What would it be like to be a stormtrooper?" It was the first time gamers got the opportunity to participate in the greatest battles of the Star Wars™ films - not as a mighty hero or all-seeing commander - but as a common footsoldier, a disposable cog in the galactic war machine.
One year later, Star Wars™ Battlefront™ II took that answer to a whole new level, expanding on nearly every aspect of the first title. The game dwarfed its predecessor in content with more battles raging across 18 famous locations, frantic space combat with massive boardable capital ships, and the addition of playable heroes and villains from the Star Wars™ universe.

Fall in line, trooper, and take your place on the battlefield in Star Wars™ Battlefront™ II, available now for Windows on GOG.com!
The 20% launch discount will last for 72 hours until Friday, January 23, at 1:59 PM GMT.

IronArcturus: Do you know what the difference is between Battlefront I and II? I've never played either game before.
+ Space Combat: In the first one, you can handle, in addition to land vehicles, Snowspeeders, Tie Fighters, Tie Bombers, X-Wings, Y-Wings, the Clone transport ship and the geonosian starfighter, but in land battle. This meant: COOL, cool, cool, shit can't shoot nothing, shit SHIT SHIT SHIT *hits the floor*. The only funny map was Bespin clouds, as the ground was somewhat limited. In the second, there is proper space, with amazing battles, dodging, flying... being awesome in short.
+ Different Maps (obvious).
+ Different time (instead of clones, you get the "pre-imperial" army of episode III.
+ A real campaign, even with some lore.
+ Can play as heroes (in the first one, you can enable jedis. They are OP slashing machines and can only be killed by an experienced player being lame and/or running over them). In the second, they are OP, but killable and you can play as them, which still presents challenge even if you are OP.
+ New clases and unlockable ones.
+ Minor changes in gameplay.

IronArcturus: So is Battlefront II just an updated version of Battlefront I? Is it essentially the same game?
Yes and no. It is, but when I play them, they feel somewhat different. I overall prefer the first one, but with the space battles of the second. I recommend getting both if you get the chance.

Battlefront 1:
-A whole lot harder imo
-Ships available on ground levels
-No sprint
-More than one faction in the campaign

Battlefront 2:
-Space battles ((but no longer ships in ground levels)mods fix this)
-Playable jedi
-Galactic conquest gets bonuses(?)
-Much larger mod community

That's it off the top of my head
Couple of quick question for those who played it:

1.) Is this in First-Person, Third-Person, or both? The screenshots seem to indicate both but the game card mentions FPP.

2.) If both, how do each handle relative to the other? Is FPP heavily favored, or is TPP just as viable?

I saw the last gog twich lets play and it's both, you can switch it on the fly via a toggle/button as it pleases you.

Both views are available. Personally, third-person is the way to go.

F4LL0UT: Just like in the Galactic Battlegrounds thread let me mention Gameranger here.
do you know if GOG versions of games are compatible with gameranger?

They are and there's no reason why they shouldn't. A GOG version would have to use a different version number of a game than the one that is most widespread to be incompatible with sessions of other Gameranger users. Even if that's the case, applying the patch that the community mostly uses to a GOG version will fix it.

Very nice, I never really noticed this game.

Where is Battlefront 1 though?
I, too, am wondering about the original Battlefront. It's the only FPS I enjoyed or even was able to tolerate. I'm not so sure I want to bite the bullet on BF2, especially with what I'm reading here and also some of the videos I've seen on Youtube. BF had that "just right" chemistry and even the slightest change could ruin the whole experience.

Thank you both. With TPP being a viable way to play, going to be keeping my eye on this one. I feel that FPP is more immersive but for twitchy/high-action-y gameplay TPP seems more suited for my tastes.
I missed BF1 and BF2 when they came out, but snapped up BF2 on release here. Spent this evening playing the first few missions in the campaign and its been a blast (if a little immersion breaking being able to respawn). It does a great job of capturing the feel of a mass battle going on.
Head's up for XP users:

I'm not sure if it was this thread, but I'm confirming someone else's post that BF2 crashes randomly in XP (32 bit, SP3); the most I've been able to play has been about 5 minutes. I haven't tried it in XP-64 yet. I have no other problems with any other software, including my many emulated games. I've filed at ticket with Support. Hopefully this is just a teething issue.

Oh dear, I have to check this soon.
I feared that all this patching for modern OSs may somehow break compatibility to the original OS it was written for at some point.
