You need to see how this one ends!

SiN Gold, a classic first-person shooter with an original futuristic story of fight against an artificial outburst of criminal tendencies, and one of the best level designs of the 1990s, coming complete with the Wages of Sin expansion, is available for only $9.99 on GOG.com.

SiN Gold is one of the great and memorable first-person shooters of the olden days. Upon release it was highly praised for the great execution of its original and involving storyline and great level design, but sadly, it suffered from long loading times and pesky glitches. The fact that the patch fixing these problems was over 30MB in size in the times of Dial-Up Internet didn't help as well. That is how a game that deserves a prominent place in gaming's all-time hall of fame ended up slightly forgotten and overlooked by many FPS fans. With all the trouble way in the past, it is now time to get acquainted (or reunited) with this fantastic title! You can explore different puzzles and new routes each time you play. You will hack computer terminals, control security cameras, and wreak havoc. You will encounter new dangers and intelligent beings in every mission as you fight your way to the ultimate showdown! And you better believe it, an ultimate showdown it will be. The game comes complete with the Wages of Sin expansion.

Begin your crusade against crime and bring down the sinister syndicate lead by the beautiful but deadly Elexis Sinclaire in SiN Gold, for only $9.99 on GOG.com!

JudasIscariot: Write to Support when things like this happen, thanks :)

korell: Hi JudasIscariot, the issue described by Strife here seems to be related to an old version of nglide that is bundled with the game. Any reason why nglide 0.99 is bundled with the game instead of nglide 1.02, the latest version?

As for the issue itself, from what I've read in the forums it looks like it might be a gamma setting issue as some users have reported that changing the gamma setting on the provided nglide does make the display visible. My guess is that those who installed nglide 1.02 ended up with the settings be reset to default nglide settings anyway, and so that is what actually resolved it. But still, why not the latest version?
I am not sure as I don't deal with the games on a technical level. I'd recommend writing to Support on that one. Sorry if I can't be of anymore help :/

korell: I don't have the game yet, though. I've been waiting to see if you guys will update it first. Can I even post a support request for a game I don't have?
If not a support ticket then definitely some form of feedback :)

edit: just double checked and if you go to Other (feedback, suggestion, kudos...) you can then select to send a question :)

korell: Got a response from Natalia saying that the product team has been informed and hopefully the game will be fixed soon. So whether that will be a fixed nglide 0.99 gamma setting or the latest nglide 1.02 provided instead we will have to wait and see, but it looks like it'll be looked into anyway. :)
Ahh yes, Natalia is a true bro :)

mistermumbles: I always find it incredibly weird when people apply 'bro' to women. I mean, seriously? It's stupid enough of an expression as is, but in this kind of case it's just downright ridiculous. //rant =P
She is best bro :P

korell: Hi Judas, I found out what I believe to be the root cause of this issue:

Some of the games here on GOG come with nglide 1.02, the latest version, whilst SiN comes with 0.99. Whilst 1.02 has 11 settings for gamma, with setting value 5 the default for gamma = 1.0, version 0.99 only has 5 settings for gamma (0-4), and both versions save their settings to the same registry key.

As such, if the user has used nglide 1.02 the gamma uses value 5 in the registry (for gamma = 1.0). Then on loading up SiN, if they don't use the configurator to change the gamma value, nglide 0.99 cannot understand what the gamma setting is as 5 is out of range, hence the black screen.

Anyway, sent the details over to GOG support last night, but today I had a response and it was said that nglide 1.02 caused some gameplay issues with AMD graphics cards on some of your test beds, so it won't be updated. :(

However, it is still useful for you guys to know about the issues of using different versions of nglide, though, as they share the same registry keys. (I much preferred it when nglide saved settings to an ini file).
Don't worry, we know :) That's why we had to go with the earlier version of nglide so that it would work for more people and wouldn't exclude those who have AMD cards because being excluded from the fun is no fun :(
