Create a New Nation.

Sid Meier's Colonization, a turn-based strategy in which you can become the conquistador of the New World, is available now for $5.99, only on GOG.com.

You probably missed the first ships in 1492 (unless you’re a Highlander), you might have played the the game in 1994 or 95 when the game was originally released (but you probably don’t have the floppy or an Amiga anymore), and now you’ve got your third and final chance to conquer the Americas: the digital version of Colonization, brought to you by GOG.com.

Sid Meier's Colonization is much more than just an improved version of strategy classic Civilization from 1991: instead of building your own civilization from scratch, you start as as a nation’s leader and begin colonizing the newly discovered world. Each of the European powers: England, France, Spain, or Netherlands has its own bonuses that make it unique, like Dutch trading, French negotiations, or Spanish military bonuses against the native villages. Depending on what you choose, you’ll be more of a colonist, trader, diplomat, or brutal conquistador. Ultimately, you’ll declare independence--but not without a fight!

Dealing with three European superpowers, eight native tribes, and finally the King's expeditionary force arriving to teach you a lesson, Colonization is a difficult task, especially since there are thousands of interactive elements that can change the outcome of each playthrough. The simple idea, mixed with creative genius of Sid Meier, and rules of a turn-based-strategy, make for a game that can be replayed forever.

Set sail, land, and claim Sid Meier's Colonization as your own for only $5.99 on GOG.com.
Are you EFFING kidding me with the city names? Loom, System Shock 2, Diablo, Wasteland? Don't tell me that leaked list we saw recently is true and you really will get those to GOG?

Aalda11: At one point of my life I found Colonization even more entertaining than Civ. It was a truly all time great strategy game.

But recently I bought the Civ4 addon and I wasn't impressed. Maybe I idealized the old version too much but more likely the addon simply wasn't as good as the old game. Anyone tried the new addon? Your thoughts?
I played both. The Civ4:AddOn used the engine from Civ 4 and you could see it. So, from game mechanics it did not play better, maybe worse than the original. The unit promotion system was directly taken from Civ4 and the maps were larger resulting in more cities and more micromanagement and there was a killer strategy using artillery. But there is also a mod TAC (the authentic colonization) which is really good (but in german). You could maybe try it.

I'm not really up on who owns the licenses these days, but does this mean GOG will be able to sell Civilization 1-3 in the future?

grviper: Tabbed browsing at its finest...
I surly hope it didn't happen ;)
Instant buy. No contest here.

I think it killed some of my childhood along with the settlers 1.
The only shame is that i played on Amiga - and usually Amiga versions were far superior to dos;(

I wonder why download file is 50mb.... maybe at least music's decent?:D

Not neccessarily because the licenses are at different publishers. Colonization is at Atari which is on Gog. Civilization is at 2K Games which is not on GOG yet.

"Take-Two bought the rights to the Civilization franchise from Infogrames in 2004 for $22.3 million."

Trilarion: snip
But they also released Colonization (addon to Civ 4).
I love this game, I'm going to have to grab a copy off GOG. Never feels dated in my book, the game play is just so much fun. Now I just need a few more cannons and dragoons.

So maybe they have the name rights but not the rights to the original game. I don't know.

Firaxis could also have licensed the name from Atari in order to release the remake.

I think it's currently not publicly known who owns the rights to Colonization. It IS known that Atari acquired them when they bought Firaxis. It is also known that Firaxis/2K bought some of the rights back when Firaxis was sold to 2K - this includes the rights to the Civilization franchise, surprisingly also those to the XCOM franchise, and possibly more. It is _not_ known whether the rights to Colonization remained at Atari or not, there are several possibilities. The fact that Colonization is released here on GOG, with Atari listed as publisher, indicates that at least the rights to distribute the _old_ Colonization game remained at Atari.

But peer pressure is an important thing. Without it your shoes would get wet.

RafaelLopez: Oh great, here's an instabuy and both my credit cards were declined at this time. I need to wait until my next cred card bill is paid. SHIT! And because of what? SIX FRICKING BUCKS!

mistermumbles: That sucks. I don't think you'll have to wait that long though. Check your PM box. ;)
Hah it sure feels like Christmas now!

We should have wishlists on the site in order to exchange this kind of stuff. Since there's no such thing, if you feel like, let me know a game you want to get so I can return the favor. That is, of course, after my cred card bill comes in 10 days... :-s
I've got an important question: in this version, after the declaration of independence and the war, the game ends or I can continue after the end of war?

thanks
Why isnt this game on the new and coming tab?

As stated in the manual:
Automatic Ending:
The game ends for scoring purposes in the
year 1800 if you’re not fighting the War of Independence. At this
time, your score is calculated and the end of game sequence is
shown. You may continue to play after 1800, but no further
scoring will occur. The game ends automatically in 1850 if you’re
fighting the War of Independence in 1800 and you don’t win the
war first. It also ends if you lose your last colony (for any reason)
and it is the year 1600 or later.
