Create a New Nation.

Sid Meier's Colonization, a turn-based strategy in which you can become the conquistador of the New World, is available now for $5.99, only on GOG.com.

You probably missed the first ships in 1492 (unless you’re a Highlander), you might have played the the game in 1994 or 95 when the game was originally released (but you probably don’t have the floppy or an Amiga anymore), and now you’ve got your third and final chance to conquer the Americas: the digital version of Colonization, brought to you by GOG.com.

Sid Meier's Colonization is much more than just an improved version of strategy classic Civilization from 1991: instead of building your own civilization from scratch, you start as as a nation’s leader and begin colonizing the newly discovered world. Each of the European powers: England, France, Spain, or Netherlands has its own bonuses that make it unique, like Dutch trading, French negotiations, or Spanish military bonuses against the native villages. Depending on what you choose, you’ll be more of a colonist, trader, diplomat, or brutal conquistador. Ultimately, you’ll declare independence--but not without a fight!

Dealing with three European superpowers, eight native tribes, and finally the King's expeditionary force arriving to teach you a lesson, Colonization is a difficult task, especially since there are thousands of interactive elements that can change the outcome of each playthrough. The simple idea, mixed with creative genius of Sid Meier, and rules of a turn-based-strategy, make for a game that can be replayed forever.

Set sail, land, and claim Sid Meier's Colonization as your own for only $5.99 on GOG.com.

svmariscal: Maybe they just put those names there to drive us insane.

Thiev: Now why would I do that...

<.<
>.>

Okay, I admit I didn't want to go with default towns and I just took names from the top wishlisted games.
So let me say that before things get out of hand (I know you guys too well :P) - the screens contain no release hints whatsoever.
You changed your avatar! How will I recognize you when we meet at the office now? :P

Psyringe: You should actually try to put some secret messages into future screenshots. Nothing of the scope of future releases of course, but ot would be fun to decypher messages to the community from GOG screenshots. ;)
I think it's more fun not putting any secret messages and seeing them being decyphered by the GOG.com community :P
Is it the DOS version? I hope not...
i'd like to know wich type (version?) of colonization is it exactly (gfx, music, engine).

Huh, I haven't even realised it's Thiev until you posted this. I thought it's some new, newer seen before, tester. :-)

The screenshots are definitely from the DOS version. Compare this Windows screenshot from Mobygames to screenshot #12 from the GOG version.

I don't know the exact differences between the versions though. But I don't think they ever changed the gameplay?
Very nice release.

I originally played this on the Amiga. Very different UI (loads of little windows instead of a fixed screen), but it was essentially the same game. Enjoyed it to bits, but it never really stuck with me as long as Civ did.

TheEnigmaticT: (snip)
While I'm seeing you in this thread, might I bring up a small pet peeve with the description of the game? It says "Designed by Sid Meier, who brought you Alpha Centauri and Civilization!" That's actually not true. The game was designed by Brian Reynolds; IIRC it was his first major game and he pitched it to Microsoft, who then hired him to complete it. The game wasn't even called "Colonization" at that time (it got that name from Microprose marketing to play on the similarity to Microprose's previously released bestseller), but "Viceroy". The game's executable still bears that name.

Sid Meier had very little input into making Colonization. He definitely gave his feedback and may have influenced some design decisions, but it's really much more Reynolds' design than Meier's. Arguably, Meier's biggest contribution to Colonization was probably designing Civilization, which Colonization builds upon in many ways.

If you want to keep Meier's name for its obvious marketing potential, perhaps mention Reynolds alongside? I mean, in Colonization we're seeing the game design talent storming the stage that later went on to create Alpha Centauri and Rise of Nations, that's not too bad, is it? :)
